I normally get my oil filters from the dealer. But I had a parts order going in to Euro Car Parts so I added an oil filter to the list. The filter is the newish drop in style that sits in the canister. The new filter was about 5mm taller than stock and didn't want to let the lid close. Put a new camshaft in an M40 1.8 at the weekend, went OK except for one thing. The Haynes manual (E36 #3210) says nothing about having to remove the crankshaft pulley to replace the belt. It's held on by a bolt with something like 229lb/ft torque and there's no way I have the tools to get that on and off. Well kiddies you DO need to remove the lower pully. "Ford reportedly mulls BMW takeover" "Munich - Ford Motor Co. has been talking to BMW about possibly taking over the luxury Munich-based auto maker, a newspaper reports. Citing sources at BMW, Welt am Sonntag reports in a story to be published today that middlemen below the highest corporate levels from the companies have been talking for three months. In Detroit, Ford spokeswoman Anne Doyle said yesterday, "We don't comment on speculation, and that's what it is - purely speculation" Volkswagen and General Motors Corp, have also renewed their interest in taking over BMW since the car company decided to get rid of its loss-making British Rover unit, Welt am Sonntag said. (AP)" Can anybody comment on the story in Welt am Sonntag??? My personal view of this is that the press is just having a field day reporting the "loss" ($3 billion) of the Rover Group to Alchemy. Also with the sudden reported sale of Land Rover to Ford for ($2.9 billion), it would only lead to natural speculation that Ford is going to buy up BMW.... (heck while Ford is writing out a check...) Yes, the expanded market advantages and the immediate cash flow of a merger are nice. Sometimes, as in the case of Jaguar, Ford saved the company from going under. As time progresses the originality and the uniqueness of the individual make is lost (In many cases that is a good thing...anybody want to own a late 80's Jaguar xj6 with its um.."reliable" electronics?). It starts with smaller shared projects, Look at the Lincoln LS and the new Jaguar Sedan sharing platform and having similar mechanicals. Right now, for this current generation of cars, that might be a good thing.. but as time progresses that leads to less individuality among the brand names. Ultimately, will we have a market place where you buy a vehicle with a different name plate that is exactly the same underneath (for example the Plymouth/Dodge Caravan....I mean....why bother having two different names in the first place.... hence Daimler-Chrysler proposed elimination of Plymouth Brand)????? Really, I don't want drive around in a Fimmer (FMW), I mean you can already drive a Folvo, a Faguar, (and the newest) Fland Rover, Faston Martin...............(Flame suit on, Volvo's, Jaguars, Land Rover's, Aston Martin's are really nice cars and there a few of them I would like to own myself someday...). - -Justin - -- '76 02 '92 325is BMWCCA# 77056 check out the updated page at: http://users.vei.net/jgerry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 10:10:58 PST From: "Chuck MacWilliam" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: re: [uuc] <E30> my first (and hopefully last) OBC question >Neil Hitze <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: O.K., so I finally get around to taking >a ballpoint pen out to the >car >to change the OBC display from metric to real measurement, but what >do >you do if that doesn't work? Good quality control and world class customer support. BMW Chassis and Lexus CS sound good to me. Plus Toyota actually makes factory performance components available over the counter. Ford is my favorite domestic manufacturer but they don't do anything even close to a BMW. Look at all the fuss they make over the new Lincoln. BFD. With their resources and marketing they are just figuring this out? Uh-huh. The high end division is nice but corporations switch visions and goals faster than chameleons change colors. Car is a '90 M3, airbag equipped. Dash is in a million pieces, it's raining, and I'm in the midst of SI battery replacement. Everything I've seen and heard makes it to be a piece of cake. Problem is, my batteries aren't even close to the ones I've seen online in "how-to's".The batteries in question are "Laser Lithium - MnO2-Li CR14250SE (3V), munufactured 9/89." They are 7/8" long, and 9/16ths diameter (approx)with no room for oversizing. Batteries Plus had nothing in a 3V, but had a 3.6V that could have tabs soldered onto it. Radio Shack also had no 3V, but had some 3.6V that might work. HELP!!! Is 3.6 acceptable? If not, what Part Numbers work from either store? I know dozens have done this, but I cannot find any part #'s, just "went down to my local electronics store..." PLEASE help, not that I want to , but I need to be at work tomorrow. Thank you, thank you, thank you...Sorry for cross-posting, but I really need to get this resolved. Last night while driving through Centreville, va., i saw what looked like a very modded E-class Mercedes (not badged). It had what looked like 19" or 20" wheels, crazy fender flares, HUGE brembo 4 POT calipers (front and rear), a nice sounding exhaust, and was really low. At a stoplight i finally got the driver's attention (who was an older man with two older men in the car with him), and asked if it was an E55. He said that it was an E60, but then the damned light turned green and we had to take off. They gave me a nice little demonstration of power, and that thing was f*&king FAST!!! I believe the E60 is a bored (or stroked) version of the E55, with quite a bit more power. Car & Driver has tested a couple of their cars & they are indeed very fast - close to 190mph IIRC. Tho I never heard exact details of the accident, I believe that Don Schroeder was driving a RennTech car when he was killed recently in Texas as the car was described as a "high performance Mercedes coupe" and I think we would have heard more about it if it was a stock rather than modified car.
