They didn't get it right in '89....first year in the U.S., and they screwed 'em up again in '94 with the V-8s' but the one you're looking at is reliable and solid as a brick. Car has no bad habits that I'm aware of. All of them eat water pumps at about 80K and need the front end / suspension components rebuilt at about 120K. Other than that, its the usual brakes, exhaust, Guibos, batteries, etc. Note that all 3.5L Big Six engines have a rather 'lumpy' idle with small misses....don't be concerned with this as they all do it. - -- Duane Collie Former owner of (2) E34 535i's. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 12:16:54 -0500 From: "Peter Sterne" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Looking for a history lesson The correct national colors? It's not a horrible job but it won't be easy. I haven't had to do it to mine yet but it looks like the top nuts will be somewhat difficult to reach. You may end up using various swivel sockets and extensions. As for underneath, that won't be too bad. Remove the C/A bushing bracket, remove the ball joint nut where it attaches to the strut assembly. <<Is it true that R&R of this [C/A] bushing is difficult and NOT a DIY job?>> You should replace the bushing since you'll probably destroy it removing it from the C/A anyway. I don't know what the best upgrade is but when I did mine many moons ago I was told to use the bushing from the E36 M3....stiffer. Can't say whether there is a difference from stock or not but it feels good. Some say to use the offset bushing commonly found in E30 M3's. This will give you more caster, probably not something the iX needs anyway...not sure if it would cause any negative effects or not. As for DIY, it was one of the easiest repairs we ever did to my car. Although we also had access to a press. Check out my website for the repair write up with pics....if you have questions let me know. http://skumwerks.net/repairs_maint/cabush.htm <<There was some talk at the school about replacing with an E30M3 control arm. I wonder how different the iX is from other E30s.>> I'm sure this will totally shock you but the iX C/A is unique from other E30's....no M3 upgrade option here. One benefit we have over non M3 E30's is that the sway bar attaches to the strut instead of the C/A. <<Should both control arms and bushings be replaced while at it?>> Definately!! Never do just one side.....uneven wear and usually since 1 is bad the other soon will be. Better it not be at the track! Good luck, have fun, enjoy the bonding experience with the iX....it's definately unique. I have a saying I like to use, FREQUENTLY, when performing maintenance/repairs/upgrades/etc...."iXpect it to be different, difficult, and expensive." Seems to be a pretty good rule. Of course I wouldn't give it up for anything! It's still a spectacular car! Later, Jack Money Motor City Chapter iX Registry, E30 M3 SIG '89 iX ----> Sharked! Loved. Merc goes for the traditonal sliver & BMW goes for the also traditional white. The shade of Green on the Jag was apparently a topic of much discussion as there was a great desire to make the car appear correct on TV, at the expense of the up close shade that was involved. I believe that BRG was deemed too dark and would have showed up as black rather than green. additionally there was apparently some concern about getting a "good" green that was not too heavy relative to other colors, but that issue was resolved. > McLaren and BMW/Williams are British teams running German motors. I agree on the overall "nationality" of the teams being based on chassis origin, but this does not seem to bother the Germans in their adoption of the Merc as the "home" team, albeit after rooting for the Schumachers. BMW has a long way to go to supplant McLaren/Mercedes as top "German" team. At least their engine is actually German tho - the McLaren "Mercedes" engine is just an Ilmor (english) re-badged.... Ben gave me a great lead-in to a question, since I was thinking about it whilst piloting the M-Coupe to work (doesn't THAT sound nice.. :-) Ben, what is the cost of certification - say - for an M-Coupe? Lotsa Bobbitting.. >in the case of engine/trans certification it's not really a big deal >resource-wise, just a matter of the money that it will cost per vehicle sold >that makes it expensive to justify. normal figure that is thrown around is >$1mil per engine/trans combination. you spend marketing $$$ on the whole range >of available models, but its harder to justify large expenditures against small >volume variants. hopefully this attitude is changing & apparently at high >levels. >Ben Keyes >C170 Finance - VPC So - if we guess $1 mil for engine/tranny - does this certification carry if the engine tranny is used in multiple models - or does it have to be re-certified say due to things like different exhausts or intake layouts? Then the safety testing - obviously per model I'd think, but does this also have to cover different engines (ie - different crash zones for diff configurations?) What I'm trying to figure out - what does certification cost per car when BMW onlys make a limited number of them? I believe the M-Coupe production (not 2.8 Coupe) is somewhere around 1,200 cars now (could be wrong on this entirely..).. So if we had certification testing costing $2/mill or so.. we're looking at ~$1,200 per vehicle just for certification testing. You said: "its harder to justify large expenditures against small volume variants" - which is why I think a lot of us fear takeover of BMW by a company like Ford.. they just wouldn't get it that small volume variants are part of what makes BMW - BWM. Too much bottom line and too little passion.. (has Ford made a car for 'passion' since the first Mustang? I can't think of one..) ................................................................... We have been hard at work for the last year creating a CD-ROM installation manual to detail the work that we have been doing with the E30 twin cam engine conversions. As some of you may know, Zionsville Autosport has done a few of these conversions already. Our first effort was putting a 3.0 liter S50 M3 engine in an E30 M3 body. We've also installed the 3.2 liter S52 motor into an '87 325is chassis (see car on our website). We are currently working on a more modest 2.5 liter M50 twin cam conversion into an '87 325 four door. We've compiled all of our techniques and custom engineering work and put the information together on a CD-ROM that will walk you step by step through the installation of this motor into the E30 chassis. We are currently taking pre-orders for the CD. The projected release date is 06/01/00. Please see our website at http://www.zionsvilleautosport.com for more information and to place your order. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send us an email or call us at our 800 number. Grand standing aside, the original poster will be well advised to check the local DMV policies by either contacting a lawyer or calling a court house. Sometimes you can call the judge (or his/her secretary) who will be presiding over your case and plead your case over the phone before you show up for the hearing. Sometimes they will tell you over the phone what hoops to jump through to avoid points going on your driving record. More often then not you can swap the first ticket in X-many months for either a traffic school or a 'deferred adjudication' (== you pay the fine, they loose the paperwork) fine. If none of the above work, contact a lawyer _local_ for the area where you got nailed. good luck, alex f ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #474 ************************** _________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Bonneville Motorwerks . http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com | Circle Tire Co.
