I think Honda would be the company for BMW to merge with if any. Hopefully
BMW can remain independent but if not Honda would be the best. Both
companies are known as Motor companies, just imagine the engines possible
if they merged. They both could share motorcyle technology and they can
complement each other in the front/rear wheel drive technology areas with
thier cars. Idea would be to keep Honda in the entry level, Acura in the
entry to mid level cars and BMW mid level to luxury and reserve Rolls for
extreme luxury.

John, I've not worked on an M40, but the factory manual makes no mention of
removing the crank hub.

If it's anything like the M20, you should be able to remove the pulleys by
removing some smaller (13mm?)bolts around the hub. The belt can then be
slid by the hub, although it is a tight fit and you MUST keep the belt very
flat to do it.

The factory manual does mention quite a few special tools to do this job,
including one for keeping the cam at TDC, which would indicate to me that
there is no timing mark on the cam. Take care with this.

Have the dealer recode the LKM. It has somehow decided that the car has a
trailer hitch, it needs to be told otherwise.

I was watching the 12 hours of Sebring on Speedvision last weekend and it
wan mentioned that the BMW V12 LMR was white because that is the national
racing color of Germany. I remember Silver being the national racing color
of Germany because Dr. Porsche refused to paint the 550 Spyder (for weight
savings) at the begining of the season and the sanctioning body allowed him
to use Silver as the car color. Does anyone know the story behind the
national racing colors?

Thanks,
William States

Go to court and declare that the CHP didn't know what he was talking about

What's wrong with this picture? The CHP gives you a BIG break. If you fight

Failed the Tech Inspection on Friday for the 1st driving school of the
season....excessive freeplay in outer ball joint.

Is replacing the control arm a DIY job?

There was some talk at the school about replacing with an E30M3 control arm.
I wonder how different the iX is from other E30s.

I assume the control arm rubber bushing should also be replaced....and
possibly upgraded, at the same time. Is it true that R&R of this bushing is
difficult and NOT a DIY job?

Should both control arms and bushings be replaced while at it?

BTW, ran home and got the SPARE BMW, which DID pass tech, so.... had a great
time at the school in spite of the minor unexpected trauma.

Don't have the exact info, but it's not because Dr. P, or the Mercedes
people not wishing to paint the 300slr either. Remember before that time the
AutoUnion and MB grand prix racers were all silver. Maybe it's possible that
the speedvision people got their facts wrong. I seem to remember white being
the Japanese racing color. (Not that two countries can't have the same
color...or can they??)

That is exactly what worries me about any sort of potential buyout.
Eventually you both weaken and dilute the BMW brand name and product
line.

The auto industry went through another consolidation period in the 50's
and 60's. BMW survived that too (just barely as we know).

No, I don't want to drive a Mopar Benz either..... but yes, if I had to
pick a US partner to merge with, I would choose Ford (given a choice of
US automakers), if not
for its leadership (former BMW men), but it does have a diverse product
(well, at least they are different in "name") line (Premium Brands).....

Does a merger make economic sense? Sure if you look at absolute costs
of constructing a vehicle. But, in the end, you have a product that is
weakened (sharing platforms, motors etc) and may loose some of its
defining characteristics (that may sell the product in the first place)
within the market place.

Consolidation is not always a good thing, IMHO.This reduces
competition, and in turn you are forced to buy one product (classic
argument). In the future we all will end up with a market place that has
weakened products. The bottom line is always profits.... no matter what
sort of "vision" they have.

If Ford decides to completely "hands-off" and allow BMW to be BMW, then
we wouldn't have much to worry about. Ultimately, I don't believe this
will be the case (if in fact there are anything to the rumors)....again
simple economics (bottom line) would be a factor.

I also worry about a couple of other things, interbrand wars and a
diluted product

Interbrand wars:, what if Ford buys BMW. BMW wants to build a car that,
on paper, is going to steal a good share of the (lets say) larger 4 door
market. Would Ford, say no to protect the interests of its other
marques? Or would Ford allow BMW to design a chassis that, in turn,
would be used by Volvo or Jaguar? Or worse... to cut costs, Ford asks
BMW to re-skinned a Volvo/Jaguar/Lincoln chassis??

Also, lets say BMW wanted to build a small 2 series. Would the exec's
at Ford tell BMW to take the newer Ford Focus chassis, rebody it, and
call a 2 series (size, dimensions would be at that "smaller end of the
mid-size car market"). From a business stand-point, it would make
economic sense. It might end up being practical, fun and it would reduce
the R&D time and development costs. You would come out with a vehicle
that will sell to the masses despite its front-wheel drive iteration.
Yes I think it would sell, despite true enthusiasts like you and I who
want rear-wheel drive. Most people (the masses) have no idea that BMW
are rear-wheel drive cars. Again, the product would ended up diluted and
BMW would start to loose its defining characteristics (that sells the
product in the first place.... the whole big fish in a smaller pond
idea). But would it then be just another car in the market place??? Not
much different from the original Focus, but with a different
badge......

I hope BMW is not ready to give into Ford (or anyone else) quite
yet.... They can survive on their own, perhaps with some smaller
strategic partnerships (suppliers etc) that would allow for independence
and not an all out merger. Economically, they do have the capability to
compete and expand their markets. If you look at BMW sales world-wide
throughout the 90's, they have gone up (quite strongly (look at the 3
series)).

BMW also has a unique (or at least somewhat unique, Peugeot is in a
similar situation) position of having one family (Quandt) (as we all
know) own a controlling stake (47%). They (Quandt Family) are very
independent. If there is one car company in this world that has a
fighting chance of doing it on their own, its BMW.

Silver, be in un-painted aluminum or paint seems to have been the official color
scheme of Pre & Post-WWII German racers, many of which pre-date Dr. Porsche's
involvement in racing I believe. the weight savings angle certainly makes
sense.

> I seem to remember white being the Japanese racing color.

that's correct - the 60's Honda F1 cars were white with little blue stripes I
believe.

I know the following colors ;

silver (or white) - Germany
red - Italy (various shades - not always "Ferrari" red)
light blue - France
green - British racing obviously
darker blue w/wide white stripes - US - based on 60's Cobra coupes & the
Corvette Gran(d?) Sport

maybe I'm all wet here - don't have all my car books at the office.

> (Not that two countries can't have the same color...or can they??)

don't know.

With manufacturers coming back into F1 in full force, the national colors have
made something of a resurgence, albeit with the required sponsor logos mixed in
- - McLaren, Ferrari, Jaguar & BMW all seem to stick with the "correct" national
colors.
