Harvey,

Depending what class the car was running in it either had regular iron
rotors (cherry red, old E34 V-8 running around road america comes to mind)
Or the Carbon Rotors that instantly heat up and give that cool yellow glow.
Either way the cost I've seen to cryo the rotor seems a little crazy when
you can buy new ones so cheap and they take 15 minutes to change. (E30)

"What is so special about BMWs and their design?"

If we are in my car ('85 535i) when they ask, I usually ask them to open the
glove box and dig out the owners manual, flip open to the "stretching during
a long trip" section...

What car company gives you a workout routine to keep yourself fit on long
trips? That's BMW culture.

I have for sale 5 e28 M5 16" oem BBS wheels without tires. They are in good
shape, little clear coat peeling but all straight and true, no curb rash. 4
with center caps and one wheel that was the spare tire wheel. asking $200
obo each plus shipping from Atlanta.
I think these wheels will also fit our cars (e30 M3), along with all 5
series.

Two data points:
1. The rotors and the pads are sacrificed to stop your car. If you succeed
in preventing rotor wear, you are left with only the brake pads taking the
pounding. If this desirable, I don't know. Rotor warping is another matter.
Preventing rotor warping would be a good thing.
1.5. Similar questions surfaced in the Roundel a few issues ago regarding
325is that warps rotors for lunch. Satch reported trying the cryogenically
treated (as well as cross drilled and gas slotted) rotors on his iX and
warping them just as fast as the stock ones. He ended up with Bolos? (or was
it another brand, I don't remember) replacing them as needed.

YMMV,

When I bought my car, a 1988 M3, a guy at work couldn't believe I spent
nearly $14k on a (then) 10 year old car that had 85k miles on it. He
thought I was crazy. Then I took him for a ride over a lunch hour on a
twisty road.

I think he understood a little better after that. :)

That is the part of the BMW culture that I love.

The Los Angeles Times today, in it's latest edition, reports that the Quandt
family spokesman has categorically said: "They will not sell any of their
48% of BMW stock". They also go on to say the Bavarian Government also holds
about 20% and there is no way they will allow a foreigner take charge of a
Bavarian company.
For those of you who know a Bavarian, any Bavarian, you know how extremely
nationalistic they are. Their motto is:
"Freistadt Bayern" - Free State of Bavaria. Now, let's hope this is where it
ends!

Just a caution to any digesters considering buying these "caps". Note that
this ad isn't for WHEELS, it is for CAPS. This same picture and similarly
vague wording was posted weeks ago. When I inquired for clarification I got
a very terse message saying they had been sold.

I FEEL FAIRLY CERTAIN THIS IS A SCAM ATTEMPT. BUYER BEWARE!!

This is not too hard to spot if you watch a lot of racing on TV,
especially Speedvision. I too was surprised the first time I saw
that. It's extra cool in a night race.
That reminds me, ever watch Paul Morris go for his drag-race start in
his 320i against all the other FWD cars? Sometimes they zoom in on
his tailpipe just as the flag drops - he's got his foot in it so far
that sparks and flames are shooting out. totally bitchin'. :)

Subject: [uuc] Cryo Rotors. Titanic.

Alex:

I do not believe this would have saved the RMS Titanic.

Having built the Titanic in the days before the Charpy impact test, the Britons did
not realize how brittle her hull was. Too much sulphur in it. A paperweight off the
designer's desk made of the same metal as the Titanic was recovered and analyzed for
sulphur a few years ago. The brittle metal was unable to absorb the impact as well.
The Charpy (Izod, etc.) impact test allows a hammer of a certain shape to fall on a
metal block of a certain shape. The deformation of the metal or the post
going-through-the-metal deflection of the hammer is a measure of the brittleness of
the metal.

As far as I know, the Titanic had two other problems:

1. A non-reversing steam turbine that flowed water over the rudder. When the captain
saw the iceberg he took the turbine offline. This slowed the forward speed somewhat,
but he lost rudder control since the reversing engines on either side did not flow
over the rudder. Lack of experience with the non-reversing turbine led to this bad
decision.

2. The watertight compartments did not have walls to the top. I think most people are
familiar with this one. If the captain had rammed the berg head on it might have
flooded few enough compartments to keep the ship level, and not flood the compartments.

Ford did not buy "Rover" (the car company that was loosing
about a Billion dollars a year) it bought "Land Rover" (the
profitable truck/SUV division of Rover) who's U.S. sales
increased 33% in 1999 after record sales in 1998. I read
that Ford makes more money on a Lincoln Navigator that sells
for around $50K than any other vehicle. I bet that Land
Rover makes even more on a $70K top of the line Range Rover.

I'm impressed you got to talk with the Quandt family about
what they are going to do with BMW, all the reports I have
read said the family was not commenting on their plans ;-)

I see in teh latest Bav Auto mag a pressure bleeder, made of plastic,

Anyone know anything about these? Are they worth the $39.95?

 Subject: FOR SALE: Immaculate 83 533i 5 speed-- $4800

It's time for me to sell my "back-up" car, I bought a truck to replace it).
I bought this car 3 years ago
and it has been bullet-proof reliable. Miles are about 159K (you would
think it was half that or less to look at it or drive it)

I have recently replaced the following:
 1) All the chrome trim around the front and rear glass (turns brown with
 time)
 2) All the wheel badging, the hood and trunk badging,
 3) New A/C compressor (3 years ago)
 4) 5 new Michelins (5,000 miles ago)

This car is all original White paint (never wrecked) in amazing condition
with virtually no door dings, (some light scratches on surface of paint)
and an immaculate Dark navy interior (no dash cracks or upholstery rips,
 excellent carpet)

----A very impressive example of an early 5 with power sun roof, windows,
locks, mirrors and On Board Computer. It is immaculate inside and out with
ice cold A/C . As is common on all these cars, it uses a bit of oil
between
changes (valve stem seals) but there is no smoke evident at all.
