Secondary to that, this so called dealer had a harrassing P.O.V when testing the car, advertising for 40grand and calling us stupid when we asked for 35 (I've seen at least two M3s with clean titles and distressed sellers go for 37+ last fall) and uses his cell phone to repetitively call back those who question his sources (my best guess is a partner in the US army in Germany, or a German national with export/tourism rights) is getting these 3 series modified in more ways than one..how else to skip DOT mods required for US cars such as the E spec headlights, etc..these are cool, but hey, NHSTA isn't THAT cool! Bottom line: these cars are not what they appear, and sold by a person who is likewise..... beware both. Howdy, all. This is a question for all of you who have laser AND radar detection gear. What is the percentage of laser hits that you detect versus X and K band? Are there a bunch of laser-jockeys out there, or is regular radar still far more popular? I use it mainly for peeling paint off the deck and removing mildew/mold from the house trim....cleaning the sludge off the gas BBQ....and spraying down the commerical trucks I have (wazzat tell you about using it on your cars?) Actually though, if I have three of four vehicles in a row to wash, I'll pull it out as it does make spraying easier, cleans the undercarriage better, and uses less water than a handheld hose. You have to be careful with these at higher pressures, especially if you use a rotary nozzle instead of the adjustable fan spray. I can peel the undercoating off a car with the rotary nozzle attached and the throttle turned up all the way. DUSSELDORF, GERMANY--Karl Meine, a new engineer at BMW, was issued a white lab coat Monday, giving him the air of a man at the forefront of German automotive technology. "Karl will wear his lab coat and observe BMW prototypes being driven at extreme speeds on sheets of gleaming ball bearings," said BMW chief engineer Gunnar Hoechst. "He will also stand before a wall of computers as cars are subjected to advanced 59-point wind-tunnel tests in stark, white rooms." My latest improvement to my '87 328is was to put in M3 springs. I had resisted until now because I didn't want to lower my car any, for fear of NYC potholes and the deep snow I often go looking for. Got the springs from fellow digester Steven Reed, who was very prompt putting them in the mail. The springs also look as new as Steve said they would. Good show, Steve! This is a pretty easy job if your nuts come off easily (as in: tie rods, control arms, top strut nut), and if you are comfortable with a spring compressor. It took me ~ 3 hours, and two beers. I got new rubber spring seats, hoping to get thicker ones than what was then on my car, but I already had the thick ones. The drop was 3/8 " in the back, 7/8" on one front and 3/4" on the other side front. This winter I put in an E36 M3 steering rack (Zionsville), and got new tires two weeks ago, Bridgestone RE 730s. These are new tires that Bridgestone says will replace the RE 71, and Tire Rack thinks they will be about equal to the "71" in the dry, but better in the wet. They haven't put them through tests yet. After putting in the springs, I had to take a good drive. On my "control" course (an ultimate-type hill and curve road), the springs were really great, riding like the old springs but having much better movement (the old springs reminded me of a Peugeot: decent control with giant travel). Next day I took a drive up to the Catskills. This car can really rip down a dirty back road! The tires handle better than my last Dunlop 4000's, but might hit the bumps a little more sharply, and they have a very minor hum. Back in the city, the ride was fine and only a little more harsh than the former springs and tires. Feels good to me, and I think I'll be ok with the potholes! So there you go, another big upgrade! If BMW would make a new E30 set up like mine (but lighter, please).... That'll set the cat amongst the pigeons :). In all seriousness, even if BMW's chassis engineers *did* crank those pants up a notch too far, I doubt they'd ascribe a non-M VIN to an M car. If they did, you can be sure that the car wasn't meant for sale to the public. In which case, I'd let it be and go look for another one. Also it seems odd that a US-spec car would have been left behind in Germany (presumably by an owner on the armed forces or a Euro delivery gone wrong). Furthermore, I recall that US-spec cars being used in Germany have US lighting (dimly-lit turn signals, plastic headlight covers and so on). And speaking of 'M's, John ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes: > Clearly Hartge and Alpina are too chicken/stiff to > license here..only everywhere else, it seems. 'Fraid so. Do you know how much an Alpina actually costs? The other tuner sanctioned by BMW is AC Schnitzer - its tuning parts are factory-approved and available from dealers (at least in some countries). Crucially, it is cheaper than Alpina, which I can see as having almost no market in the US.
