Kelley Blue Book retail prices are what a BMW dealer will
typically sell a super clean detailed used car with some
sort of warrantee for to someone who is afraid to look at a
private party car. Along with Roundel and Robb Report adds
the KBB retail print outs are great to use when you are
SELLING a used car to try and keep the price high ("Look
your getting a great deal, here's a used 540i in the Robb
Report for $100K")

>Try www.nada.com (right on the money) or

As a BUYER I have also used Edmunds print outs to try and
get the price down. It seems easier to negotiate when it's
not you telling the guy the car is worth a lot less than he
is asking ("Look new M5s are much less than $100K and
Edmunds says your 540i is worth.......").

Right idea, wrong scenario.

The original poster has already stated that the pads are jammed into the
brackets.

The piston pushes the pad against the rotor, but when the piston pressure is
relieved, the pad can't back off.

Cleaning the brackets, lubing them and installing pads that fit will
probably solve this problem.

Try Harbor Body Works in Costa Meesa. -2000 block of Placentia ave. Ask for
Van Douglass (owner). Does a lot of Porsches, BMWs. Did an excellent job on
my 3.0 coupe. Pays attention to detail and will work with enthusiatic owners.

Hi to anyone who was there.
What a perfect day !
Had tones of fun, met some cool people, but I think even as a relative
novice I managed to cook my brakes, there is a slight high frequency
vibration when braking now.
Those Euro front rotors I saw on some cars sure sounded like they do the
job, you can hear them cooling and "tinking" as they contract.

Read the story on AP:

<http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20000321/bs/germany_bmw_2.html>

Some excerpts:

"Tuesday March 21 2:37 PM ET

A spokesman for the Quandt family, which owns 48 percent of BMW, denied it
was being primed for sale, saying that the family was not in talks to sell
its stake.

``One would never sell such a pearl,'' spokesman Thomas Gauly said.
``Enthusiasm for BMW lives on in the fourth generation of Quandts.''

and ..
"As for BMW, analysts say the decision on the company's future independence
lies with the Quandt family, which neither needs nor apparently wants to
sell.

``You almost have to be German to understand the enormous prestige attached
to the Quandt family in owning BMW,'' Little said.

``They are wealthy beyond belief and selling it could actually cause them
more problems in trying to figure out where to invest all that money.''"

Quote:

"Monday March 20 5:42 AM ET

MUNICH (Reuters) - BMW AG's major shareholder the Quandt family on Monday
quashed speculation it was interested in selling its 48 percent stake in the
company to Ford Motor Co or other rival car makers.

A spokesman for the billionaire German industrial dynasty said the family
had no reason to sell its stake and had no interest in doing so. BMW last
week jettisoned its loss-making UK Rover subsidiary and sold off Land Rover
to Ford.

The spokesman said that the family was not in talks with Ford -- the world's
second-biggest car maker -- or with any other rival car company, about
selling its stake.

``The Quandt family has given no one the task of finding solutions for BMW
because there is no reason to nor an interest in selling BMW,'' Quandt
family spokesman Thomas Gauly said.

``There have been no talks with Ford or with any other auto maker. Any
reports to the contrary are speculation and without any substance
whatsoever,'' he added."

Subject: [uuc] <e28> Too much rubber?

I just picked up a set of Borbet Type H wheels - 16" - from an E39 owner.
They are fitted with 3 good and 1 bad Pirelli Winter 210 Asimmetrico snow
tires. These tires are 225/55-16. Dunlop D60A2 225/50-16 is what I plan to
buy for these wheels (20mm offset). I know I will have to make or buy shim
rings to locate the hub on center.

Since I've been running 220/55-390 TRX's on a 22mm offset, there's little
doubt in my mind that the 225/50s will work.

My question is about the 225/55-16 snows. I would like to be able to use
these tires if possible next winter - either move them back to the Borbet
wheels, or buy some steels. Are these too big for my car? I don't have the
shims to be able to drive on them ... and the defective tire is REAL ugly -
I don't know if I'd trust if for even a short ride.

TIA ...

Subject: [uuc] 5.75" E-code conversion

I haven't ordered through this company yet, but they seem to be one of the
very few AutoPal retailers in the US. I sure do like those Cibies that Talbot
and Stern offer, but... $$$ ow. AutoPal quad round 5.75" e-code conversion
lamps (sans bulbs) are listed @ $79.90 plus $7 shipping in the US, which seems
like a pretty good deal compared to ~$200 for a set of Cibie lamps (of course,
I write that never having used either the AutoPals or Cibies, so...).

http://www.autooptiks.com

Specifically,

http://www.autooptiks.com/convmat.html

Their prices on bulbs are outrageous though, and I don't see anything but ion
this and dichrotic that, so I suspect one's best bet would be to order the
lamps through them, sourcing normal clear bulbs locally or through some other
mail order business. If I can ever actually bring myself to drop more than $6
each on a headlight, I'll sent a note to the list giving a thumb's up or down.

Subject: [uuc] weight shift

Dave at the office is enamored of Big 'Murrican Arrn - specifically
Corvettes. We took a long lunch Friday for him to inspect and negotiate
the purchase of an '88. It was a nice spring day and I felt like driving
across town and back, so we put all his inspection stuff in my car. When
he set his 8 ton floor jack in my trunk, the springs sagged a bit. His
toolbox, and the rest of the buyers guides and option decoder manuals, rode
up front with him.

After a successful negotiation and a quick lunch at Carls Jr., we had the
sunroof open and the windows down, in high spirits enjoying the trip back
to the office. From westbound Colfax St. onto southbound I-25, there's a
lovely ramp that involves a diving turn to the right into a left sweep
under the freeway before a climb to join the freeway traffic. The yellow
diamond signs claim it is to be done at 25mph, but that's for Buicks and
minivans. So with a clear lane ahead we headed in at a somewhat brisker pace.

At the bottom of the curve, as I was unweighting the left side springs and
setting up for the climbing turn to the left, we heard a tremendous THUD.
The tail of the car jumped to the right, and suddenly I was in quite a bit
more oversteer than I had expected. After a brief visit inside the left
lane stripe and a good close look at the left wall, we got everything
sorted out and re-balanced, and headed on our way up to the freeway.

>From the sound that jack made, I was imagining everything from a splintered
battery box to an outward dent in the right rear fender. As it turned out,
nothing was damaged. Moral of the story: Secure movable objects before
spirited driving, especially heavy hunks of steel on casters, especially if
they're way at the back where they have a long lever arm around the CG.

A local tire shop has Kumho 711 225/50-16 - v rated for $75 each. Seems
like a good price on a good looking tire. Any reason I shouldn't buy these
tires?

Subject: [uuc] <E-28> Suspension help needed

Oh Great Digest...(I'm in a prone/bowing of head position)...give to me large
knowledge of suspesion.
Hopefully the gods are appeased. Now, I've got an 87 535is that's pretty much
stock, but for the 16"wheels and 225/45 A520's and 750 control arm bushings.
It has developed a strange reaction to sharp bumps over the last 3 weeks.
Sharp suspension travel seems to cause the rear to yaw to the right! Go
figure. Smoother bumps, dips in the road, etc. don't have the effect.
However, bridge-road connections, expansion joints, and the like make the
tail step out "noticably" to the right. The other night I crossed a section
of pavement at hi(gh)way speed, that has been rippled by the Carolina heat in
mid corner. The back end stepped out with purpose, and as Mr. Sphincter
harvested large chunks of seat cushion, I was forced to mentally review the
death and dismemberment section of my insurance policy.
I've briefly crawled under the beast and have not noticed anything burnt,
bent, or missing. The physics alone are somewhat baffling as a yaw reaction
to compression seems out of place. The car tracks straight at all speeds
(into triple) and doesn't seem to reflect any other odd behavior. (Other than
water on the floor/trunk, brake pressure accumulator failure, control arm
bushing death, large bills for guibo replacement !?!, and any other common
E-28 maladies)
Anybody have a clue?

Subject: [uuc] CD Troubles

Hello,

I'm a new subscriber, and this is my first time to post. Thank you for creating this
forum for the exchange of ideas and informatioin. Here is my first question:

I have a trunk mounted Alpine CD player (P/N 88 88 1 600 249/250)in my '92 325i. I
was changing some of the CD's and must have put one in backwards or upsidedown or
something, because I got an error message - "disc error" - on the radio's display.

No big deal, I'll just walk around back and straighten things out. WHAT??? Now the
magazine that holds all six discs won't eject. And I don't have a radio manual to
explain how to get myself out of this mess. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance for your replies.
