Actually, the timing belt itself does not really break. The belt may still look fine from the outside. But with the teeth missing on the inside, your engine parts do things they were never designed to survive. > The engine would operate just fine (for a while) with a few > missing timing belt teeth, as many teeth are enaged to each of > the three toothed pulleys at any one time. It's not always an > all or nothing situation. Depending on your definition of 'a while', I might beg to differ. Timing belt teeth suffer equal wear and tear. Eventually, they are worn so much that they are ready to rip off the belt. When one goes, the same load that used to be born by X many teeth engaged by the crankshaft gear wheel are now born by (X - 1) very fatigued teeth. Guess what, the next one in line rips off, and so on. With terminal effects for an M20 engine. > However, it seems fairly obvious that the belt may indeed be > due for replacement, and I would strongly suggest not driving > the car until the engine has been properly inspected to verify > what exactly the problem is, and repaired if necessary. There is no way to test/inspect t-belt on an M20 engine short of removing it. By then you might as well spend the extra $15 to install a new one. What's more, I would suggest there is no way those missing teeth would fly into the engine bay with t-belt cover still in place. At any rate, this discussion is moot since the original poster figured (after surviving the digest induced heart attack) that the spare rubber parts are the missing air box mounts (or something equally trivial). For those still reading this thread, BMW recommends replacing the t-belt every 60K miles of 4 years. The digest consensus is to reduce the mileage range to 50k miles. Once in there, also replace the tensioner and 3 auxiliary belts all of which come off for the t-belt replacement. Consider replacing the water pump while you are at it as well. If your engine has 150+K miles, your crankshaft seal might also be leaking and begging to be replaced (another $10). alex f ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 13:46:30 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [uuc] testing wheel trueness >By the way, is a 235/40/17tire a good size for these rims or should I >stick with the 225/45/17 size that was stock? I bent countless number of rims with 235/40 tires on my 95. OK so it was only 5 rims but one of them was one-a-dem expen$ive Fixme forged ones. Here's the methods I tried in increasing order of success. 1. Put wrench on 32mm nut and whack wrench with hammer. (no luck) 2. Stuff a rag between the belt an pulley, put wrench on 32mm nut and whack with hammer (no luck. Belt still spun on pulley) 3. Take long screwdriver and stick tip into belt about 1-2 inches from water pump pulley. Lever the shaft of the screwdriver against the pulley to keep the belt from moving. Use your other hand to unscrew the fan clutch. (Worked like a champ. Took a chunk out of the belt, but I had a replacement ready. Eugene, Start by making sure you do not already have one combined with your radiator. For example, E30 325i automatics had transmission oil cooler built into the radiator itself in addition to the engine oil cooler below the radiator. alex f ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 11:43:16 -0800 From: Shiv Sikand <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] <e28> M5 control arm bushings Folks, It's time for me to go the 750 bushing route...Mr Dinan wants $99 a pop, while Steve'D is charging a far more reasonable $30... If BMW did this w/ the 525/325 automatics, using the > auto ECU in a the manual COULD lead to knock problem under > full-load, low-rpm conditions. Hope this helps In addition to this great explanation, bear in mind that manual and automatic ECUs are programmed for different idle speeds. Automatic ECUs are also programmed expect a data feed from the automatic transmission that will never come on manual cars. This will result in looping idle when automatic ECUs are installed on manual cars. This programming difference may or may not be rectifiable through a visit to the dealer. The cost of re-programming was more then shipping the wrong ECU back to the junk yard in exchange for the correct ECU. alex f ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 10:55:49 -0600 From: "Chris Alberts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Euro Headlamps answer and question Perry, and anyone else who's interested: BMP Design (http://www.bmpd.com) sell the Euro headlamps for $429.95. On a similar note, I have a yen to upgrade the lights on my 99 M3, but I'm not sure I want to go to the expense/trouble of installing Euro headlamps. The group said its BMW brand X5 sports activity vehicle could be used to pioneer a range that could give it a stronger presence in one of the car market's fastest growing sectors. "I would not like to preclude the possibility, to put it in somewhat reserved terms, that the X5 might well become the father of an entire model series," BMW chairman Joachim Milberg told a news conference. BMW's sale of its Land Rover operations for $3 billion came as part of its decision to drop its loss-making British subsidiary Rover. BMW had been expected to hang on to the profitable Land Rover which produces the Range Rover sports utility vehicle. Ford's acquisition of Land Rover, including the Solihull assembly plant in England, would bring another British brand into the Detroit-based group's stable. It already owns both Aston Martin and Jaguar. Ford and BMW's boards authorised the deal last week, but it still falls short of a definitive agreement as it requires due diligence by Ford and regulatory approval. Ford has said it expected the deal to be concluded in the third quarter. General Motors Corp GM.N said last week it could challenge Ford's bid for Land Peter A. First nominee is the sponsor (the tobacco company :-)), then it's the team name (the owner :-)) and last - the engine supplier. even if the engine supplier holds major stakes in the team (such as Mercedes holds some x0% in McLaren). In Williams case, BMW is also major backer, but Compaq gets to keep the largest decal on the sides. so the team name is Compaq Williams BMW (although the official website is BMW Williams F1. > I didn't get to see the race, but it doesn't look like BMW is doing all that terribly this year (so far). right - it's been almost 30 years since a new entry mftr/engine supplier scored a podium place in the first race. freude am fahren, dragos ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #523 ************************** _________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Bonneville Motorwerks . http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com | Circle Tire Co.
