In addition to observing people working on cars in shops and at the track I would like to get a list of problems/needs people on this list have encountered while working on their BMWs. I would welcome any input on particular problems you have encountered. Why would you want to email me your problems/ needs? Well, the synthesis of this project will be a product that may just solve your problem. Thanks, Juan Bruce BMW CCA GGC '95 M3 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 04:16:29 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: <E46> Friend with 323i Questions I have owned my '99 323i/4 since August of '99 and I love it. Recently, I had it in for service to have the TSB on the front brake shimmy performed, turns out they replaced both front rotors, pads, a steering coupler, and balanced all 4 wheels and tires. My advice to anyone who has an E46 produced prior to 11/99 is to wait until your car needs brakes to have the TSB performed. An interesting side note is while my car was in for service, they gave me an E46 328 loaner to use for the weekend. It was a premium package, non-sport car, and let me tell you, I noticed the difference instanteously. The sport pkg is VERY MUCH worth the added cost. To me, there was a night and day difference. More so than in the E36's. Besides that, the sport seats in my 323 are much more comfortable.. (they grab you). While it's true the ride may be a bit more harsh, if you're friend is under 80yrs old, he/she won't mind the difference. The sound system was also stock (I have the Harmon Kardon) and again, a major difference, more so than in the previous E36. The bass is much deeper, and the highs are much crisper and cleaner. Interestingly, I burned a CD one night over the weekend and when I played it in the 328, it sounded grainy and crappy. I had burned it on a new Sony CD (a box of which I had just purchased) and I figured the CD's must have poor sound quality. When I put the same CD in my car w/the HK, it sounded perfect. With all this talk of lighting, I have the Xenon lights on my 323 - to be honest, the standard lights on the 328 loaner I had were more than adequate.. the only difference I could tell was the color of the light.. (obviously more yellow in the standard system)- but even still, much whiter than any other headlight on the road. The beam pattern was very similar to that of my xenon equipped "ellipsoid" 323. That was confusing because I thought the beam pattern I had (with the sharp cutoff) was due to the ellipsoid lens used in the light. (the stock car has no ellipsoid) I love my Xenon's, don't get me wrong, but I tend to think the units used in the E46's are not as great as they are in other models in BMW's lineup. The 328 was also an auto.. and for the first time ever, I really didn't mind it.. I've had 5 speeds all my life, but I didn't mind the regular auto (non-steptronic) - it seems over the course of a few years, BMW has really updated the auto trans quite well (much better than in early iterations of the E36). When put into sport mode, the car responded like it should have - held the gear till redline and really worked aggressively. In a nutshell, what should he buy? My advice would be either a stick or auto 323 with sport pkg and Harmon Kardon. The 328 isn't worth the extra $$$. The sport pkg and harmon kardon are definite "must-have's". I wouldn't start replacing speakers and changing stereo components. (this coming from a person who used to enjoy seeing how many tweeters and woofers he could run off a single 300W Rocksford Fosgate Amp) - -Ted '99 323i/4 Sport Titanium Silver/Black Leather HK w/CD Changer/Xenons/Heated Seats//Moonroof/Factory Alarm Clear Lenses all Around/Painted Molding on trunk (like 328)/Short Shift Knob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 07:52:35 -0500 From: "Pat Donahue" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Saving bandwidth (was: [uuc] Re: [uucdigest] V3 #535) AOL lowered the IQ level required to use the internet. Now we get illiterates in huge numbers. You've seen these people everywhere else and didn't realize it. They're the drivers of those cars that pull up to the curb in front of the grocery store where it say no stopping, standing, or parking so they can run in and grab a few (dozen) things. They're the ones with overflowing shopping carts in the express checkout too. When you go to the bank and the guy in front stands idly in line then starts trying to figure out what he wants to do when he's standing at the teller's window - that's one. There's many other examples of these low IQ types around. That said, there's some very smart folks taking advantage of AOL (AO Hell) who don't mind being associated with these folks. We would like to invite everyone to the 3rd Annual Mid-Atlantic ti-Fest. That's right, it's time for Mid-Atlantic ti-Fest 2000 in August. It is in conjunction with the National Capital Chapter. Basically we are tagging some events to our chapter's events. ;) Maybe this will be a good time to combine a little vacation to visit Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD. Everyone is invited! You don't need a 318ti. All enthusiasts are welcomed. How's this for a weekend of events? For the track junkies, start off with a taste of Summit Point Raceway. Thurday Aug 10 We will meet in Charles Town, WV at ti-Fest West for an impromptu gathering. (motel to be announced) Friday Aug 11 Then we drive 15 minutes to the track. 7:45am FATT (Friday at the Track) at Summit Point, WV http://www.bsr-inc.com/bsr/summit/SPR.HTM (This is *not* a BMW CCA sponsored event) Cost $150.00 (subject to change) Will need to pre-register early. Don't want to do the track thing. Then join us in the evening at the Last Chance Saloon in Columbia, Maryland (tentative) Saturday Aug 12 Don't want to toss your bobtail around? How about waxing it up for the Concours? Or bring your R/C and participate in the 1st Annual R/C autocross. Autocross / Councours / Remote Control Autocross (location TBA) Hopefully some vendors. How about we all go to Dave and Busters for some video games in Bethesda, MD or maybe a dinner somewhere. Can't make it down Saturday? Try your skills at our TSD Rally. Sunday Aug 13 am Basic Training TSD Rally We will start in Virginia and will end up at a restaurant and enjoy a German buffet at the awards ceremony. Our TSD rallies are at or below speed limits. Each team needs two people, one to drive and one to navigate. See my rally web page for more info about rallying. http://www.branded.org Notes: If we get enough 318ti for the autocross, maybe we can have our own heat. The TSD rally will run on paved or solid dirt roads. If anyone has any suggestions or questions, please let me know. Prizes will be awarded for 318ti owners. We will work on discounted motels and I'm sure some local listers can offer housing. I will be repeating this on a regular basis so I don't want anyone to tell me they didn't know. See http://www.318ti.org/ti-fest2000 for more details. ...steven ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 08:08:54 -0500 From: "Rob Levinson - UUC Motorwerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] <e28> Shortshifter question The problem with your detent spring will remain - the installation of a short shifter will definitely not correct that. When I mentioned this to Matt Curry (Curry's Automotive, Manassas VA <- plug) he told me that he had his guys mount/unmount tires FIFTY times with BMW 17" rims before they could touch a customer's wheel. Tiny exaggeration? Maybe, but Matt's guy whipped tires on/off the LTW wheels in seconds with no damage. The shadow (xenon light owners will know what this is) was hitting about in the middle of the lane the car was in and was well down the road. Took it to a dealer and they adjusted it to hit the middle of the road and closer. Much better and less flashing of lights from oncoming cars, although if you hit even a small rise in the road it will raise the beam enough to get a reaction from oncoming cars. Part of that is IMHO the uniqueness of the lights startling the oncoming driver. Whether they are better I can't really say. They are brighter but a much different experience than halogen sealed beam. BTW, it has 198,000 miles on the clock. It sounds like a bearing starting to go south. The groaning increases with speed. It doesn't matter what gear I'm in, it stays constant while turning in either direction, on throttle, off throttle, or coasting in neutral. I've just drained the diff and didn't find any metal bits in the oil. I've also started to notice slight vibrations at various speeds. This leads me to think the center bearing on the drive shaft is the part going bad instead of ring and pinion bearings. I have yet to get the car up in the air and remove all the stuff required to have a look at the drive shaft. Does this sound like a typical failure description for a center bearing? I've done some looking around on the web for the R&R procedure but have not had any luck as yet. I haven't looked at the Bently book yet, so that may take care of questions I have. I guess the main one I have is, is this a job that requires special tools to R&R the bearing? Would it be wise to get a completely rebuilt drive shaft since the car has so many miles? If you want to throw the dealer under the bus, if you think they are the problem here you can call the secratary of state's police (in most states) as they enforce dealer issues with VIN's and full disclosure issues. It won't stop them if they go to those lengths, but it may slow them down a little. Good luck! Jason Daniels - ---------- > From: Ahmad S.
