So we <snip> > "sergeant"? driving a current 7 series --- stands out like a sore thumb! 1. (the obvious response) Anyone can drive a 740 - either renting one, borrowing one or simply driving a repossessed vehicle. blahblah. 2. (the logical response) A 95 740i can be found for around 30k (to be generous). I am completely sure that you won't find anything suspicious seeing a law enforcement officer driving a Chevy Tahoe, a Caddy or anything else (domestic) in the same range for that matter. You probably won't even notice it, although they are fine cars and they do cost around 30k. I mean - look around - the world is filled with 3.2 TLs or GS 3/400. In most cases i think a new car is new for a day only and it really doesn't worth paying the extra premium when you can go "used". IMHO, a used 7 series worths/drives/behaves and retains value much more than a new 30k car would do. And there you have your response. Commenting a bit on that - i am always suprised to see how the majority reacts when they notice the vehicle of your choice. If it's a BMW/Porsche and so on - EVERYONE (with no exceptions) will say you're loaded. You would be surprised to see what you can buy for 20k. I got rid of the smell in my car by removing the seats, and spraying all the soft surfaces with Febreeze. Be sure to spray the undersides of the seats, too. I removed the under-dash kick-panels, and sprayed the soundproofing. I put a good bit on there, so everything was damp to the touch. I also sprayed a good shot of Febreeze down inside the air vent registers to kill the smell of the dust that's trapped in there. I wiped down the entire interior with Lexol and 3M rubber & vinyl protectant cream. If it's soft, Febreeze it. If it's hard, wipe it down. Get rid of ALL the dust. I then parked the car in the full Texas summer sun, and cracked the windows about 1/2 inch each. This let the inside get hot enough to drive off the odor, but allowed the Febreeze to evaporate. The next day, I replaced the seats, buttoned everything up, cleaned the inside of the windows, and was amazed not only by how little smoke I could smell, but how good the inside looked! :-) Good luck - Scott 1985 535i ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 16:39:12 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: Suspicious Don't know what part of the country you're from, but here in NJ some of the seargant's make around $60 - $80k... in Paramus, NJ standard police officers start at around $43k.. and Bergen County Sherrif's officers top out at around $65k.. (with no promotions) You know, I always hated the cliche that you had to make "mega-bucks' to drive a BMW. My first BMW was a 1984 BMW 318i that I managed to pay for by myself.. the car cost me $4500... people at High School would say "oh look at him, he's rich" - meanwhile, Joe Blow would get a brand new 300ZX or Mustang that cost over $15k, and no one would say a word to them.. All of this goes to prove the simple point that until you know the details, it's foolish to pass judgement.. - -Ted '99 323i/4 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 16:39:11 -0500 From: "Rob Levinson - UUC Motorwerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: UUCFest is on! I agree that cops put their lives on the line on a daily basis, but I don't agree they are terribly underpaid. I have several good friends who are cops and they make a pretty good living. I also do the taxes for at least a dozen and a half various law enforcement officers (cops, sheriffs and highway patrol) and they all make over $70k from the law enforcement job. Maybe this is a CA thing. Another thing I have noticed is that most of my cop friends and clients have second jobs. One city in the area even has kind of a rotating schedule where the officer will work 11 days, on one day, off the next, then have 5 straight days off. Nice gig. They all do either construction or sell real estate. My partners teacher wife makes $45k, but only works 8.5 months of the year. Her biggest complaint is parents who don't do their part of raising the child. Good complaint. Off my soapdish (not big enough of a rant to warrent a box).
