A BMW Club racing pal sells ex highway patrol cars as tow vehicles for race cars and horse tralers. I don't think that's what they had in mind and it's hard to explain on a tech sheet. No 4-wheel steering on the 850CSi.<< Oops, again ;-) Actually, those lucky SOB's in Europe got their 850CSi's with AHK, or "Active Rear Axle Kinematics". This system, as described in the ECE owner's manual, "at 25mph is activated with every movement of the steering wheel; it modifies rear wheel lock angle and repositions the rear wheels ideally to suit the driving situation. The optimum rear-wheel angle is calculated from the steering wheel's momentary lock angle and the vehicle's road speed; the wheel angles are then adjusted by the electro-hydraulic control circuit." This actually is rear wheel steering. The bad news is that BMWNA, in their infinite wisdom, determined the US spec 850CSi's shouldn' t come with this feature. But Rob's right, swtich off the ASC+T, swtich on the Sport EML mode, and throttle-induced oversteer isn't a problem ;-) Steve Castle ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 08:00:29 -0500 From: "Rob Levinson - UUC Motorwerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] 850CSi - 4 wheel steering?! And most BMW's......... One could suggest the 8 series has 4 wheel steer, as the rear end is designed, as Rob suggests for other cars, to twist during cornering. The deflection is minute, less than a degree, but it's there, on most BMW's. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2000 08:56:37 -0500 From: "Karl Zemlin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Re: Whadja find in dere? Like i said they don't list any fitments, just that it's a 16x6.5 which is about a half-inch too narrow for my tastes. But it does look like the Alpha M5s that you're looking for. If it comes in a 4-lug VW fitment then it would probably fit an E30 with the right spacers. But you have to call them and see what it fits. You also might want to check into the MAS Shadow wheel, it has a similar M5 look as well but still no fitment info. Man that's frustrating. Another surprise was they also show a "Motorsport Style" which looks like an E36 M3 wheel, but again no info on if it's available in 4-lug or what kind of cars they fit. I've written Direct about their lack of fitment info and how they should add the E30 to their Shockwave demonstration thingy and to add a fitment chart (like the TSW site has) and i actually got a reply the next day telling me they're adding the E30 to their database and will also consider adding a fitment chart :-) I guess i should suggest they give me free wheels and see what kind of reply i get to that :-) Didja ever call the National Wheel Connection and ask about the M5s ? And GM is now starting to offer 4-wheel steering on some of their bohweemuths. Actually makes sense in a large SUV or truck application when you consider the usual turning diameter. The mags tested 4WS a few years back and said the only significant benefit they could find was greater stability in high-speed emergency lane changes. OBC: I have 4WS in my M coupe. I control the front wheel steering with the steering wheel and the rear wheel steering w/ the gas pedal (or I try to). After several 90's, 180's, and 270's, I found the rear has a much tighter steering ratio than the front! Sorry I can't attend UUC Fest. Too far away! After driving out to watch a couple GGC autocrosses in my 2002 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds in the mid 80's I decided to actually sign up for one in my new (to me) '78 320iS after I moved to San Diego in 1986. With a new set of 13" wheels from a '83 320iS complete with Michelin MXLs, and a rear sway bar from a '77 320iS. I was ready to sign up for my first BMW CCA Autocross. I called the club number and somehow got in touch with Dan Tackett who told me about a BGR Autocross School that was a weekend before the next GGC event. I signed up, learned a lot and since I was a first timer I ended up working a corner for the first actual run group. One of the first cars out was a lowered Datsun 510 with sticky bias ply autocross tires. The guy had 40psi all around when he went through tech, but they estimated he had under 20 psi in his front tire as he rounded a corner and lost the bead. The rim bit in to the soft asphalt and the car flipped right in front of me. I have not seen a car flip since then, but the moral of the story is to keep an eye on tire pressure at an autocross.
