A ticking noise would tend to indicate gear damage, like a chipped tooth.

However, first thing in trans diagnosis is remove the Redline and fill with
specified, non synthetic ATF. (or gear oil for those with older cars)

If noise continues, do as you wish with lubricants, if noise goes away,
don't put Redline back in it.

Assuming we are talking about an E36 here. It is possible to install the
microfilter (the long way) without breaking it.

If you remove the glove box and drop the electrical box, you can get it in
without breaking it.

If you do it the way BMW intended for it to be done, you break it.

>From memory, it is possible to remove the cluster without removing the
wheel, although it's extremely risky, to the face of the cluster. It
basically requires you to force the cluster out and past the turn signal
switch, while turning the steering wheel, so that the cluster stays in the
larger of the openings in the wheel. Rather daunting, as you are waiting to
hear the crack as either the cluster lense or the turn signal switch breaks.

You are better off removing the air bag and wheel.

Once you've done this, you'll see two Phillips screws at the top of the
column, right where the switches are, holding the upper and lower column
halves together.

There are two more screws in a slot about 8 inches down the lower column,
facing up.

Remove the four screws and both covers should come off.

Be warned.
Once you fix the cluster, you'll want to plug it in and turn on the ignition
to test it all.

DON'T !

If you turn on the ignition with the air bag disconnected, you'll set an SRS
fault that you CAN'T clear yourself. You will need to go to the dealer, or
a good independent, where, more than likely, they will need to dig into your
dash, to the SRS control unit, because it doesn't have a diagnostic link to
the diagnostic connector in the engine bay. $$$$

So, is Redline fluid _bad_ for transmissions ??? (assuming
one uses the correct Redline fluid for one's transmission).

speaking of wrong size... I noticed while perusing an oil filter
cross-reference chart that my BMW filter has "standard" threads, while
the filter that fits a buddy's Chebby has metric threads. Go figure.

I used to have a 318 that displayed the same tendency.

Many moons ago, someone on the old Welty Digest explained the noise. If I recall
it had something to do with the layout of the idler (lay?) shaft and gear?
It's nothing to get alarmed about, it's just a consequence of the design.

guess what kind of vehicle he currently autocrosses?

We need to get that Z3 2.8 Coupe out of the 3 Series 6 Cylinder autox class
for O'Fest. It doesn't belong with the "regular" 3 Series cars.

Subject: [uuc] Broken Plastic Ring for E36 Mid Range Speaker

My mid range speaker ring has been cracked for a few weeks now on the
passenger side. And finally yesterday it gave out and fell down the door.
It broke in two spots, hence there are two pieces. I called the dealer for
just the screen and ring for the speaker, but naturally they will only sell
the whole speaker for a mere $70 plus installation. I was thinking of maybe
getting some special glue (no idea which) and putting it back together, but
that would look horrible. I know this is one of those top ten tings that go
wrong in the E36 so any ideas would be great. TIA.

One of my personal pet peeves is front stress bars. They rate right up
there with poorly designed EPROMS, cheap brake rotors with fancy cuts in
them, and adjustable fuel pressure regulators as "Performance Items". Most
the time you ARE buying these for the looks. Until you go the full blown
suspension retrofit with stiff shocks and springs, R-Compound Tires (or
slicks) and wide footprints, you are not putting enough stress on your shock
towers to make a difference. So its mostly cosmetic.

Now, ya wanna tell if your towers are flexing before you spring for the
money for the bar? Take a length of thin monofilament fishing line and run
it tightly under the bolts of your strut towers. Cinch it down good and
tight, with tension on the line and run it so there is a clean run on the
line from one end to the other with no obtrusions. Now go out and play on
your favorite road. Make the car work hard in the turns. Come back home,
pop the hood and if the fishing line is not broken in two, your towers are
not flexing. IF the line is broken, install an underbody X-Brace off the
Cabs (if E36) then go out and do the test again. Break the line, then
install a strut bar.

You can also look at the welded area where the strut tower is joined to the
inner fender. If your car is flexing, the paint will be cracked at the
seam.

And if you ARE buying it for looks, then go for the big kahuna of stress
bars and get the StrutBarabarian as it has the most Fabio look of the bunch.

Just checked my email from the last week - you laddiebucks are prolific typists! My
'83 533i made it from Independence Oregon down to San Francisco in good form - my
kludge shimming of the transmission console gave the car a functional fifth gear.
Lots of BMWs to be seen in the big city - many wearing the scars of city traffic. We
parked ours and did the oriental rug show for five days. Decided to roll down to 29
palms on Sunday afternoon and had a long drive - exacerbated by nonfunctional air
conditioning. Dubious entertainment: checking the OBC to read the temperature while
sitting in 102 degree heat. It claimed 114 while sitting in the mass of fuming cars.
Waugh! 80mph helped cool things down later. We are going to see about getting the
air working tomorrow and then maybe going home via Arizona on Thursday. We are the
shiny Black '83 533i wearing 16" MOMO wheels and clothes hanging in the driver's side
rear window. Give us a blip if you see us!

True. And they were giving these things away not too long ago. You could
get big discounts plus the CCA loyalty rebate and just steal one of
these. I probably should have bought one. Probably a good used bargain
too, although I haven't priced any.

However, the M3s have the ESP sandbox to play in now - BWAHAHAHA!
