Thank you all for the help already given in response to some of my questions. Even with the DNS problems uuc has been experiencing the last few days, I've received several gems! As a result of answers given to my previous post, I've successfully removed the aftermarket tinting, the headliner is looking better (though still a bit dirty), and I've received excellent instructions for replacing the shifter slider cover. OK, here are a few more used 525iT fix-it-up questions: - -The leather armrests, when in the down position, squeak incessantly while driving as they rub the seat. I've tried Meguiar's Leather Cleaner to no avail. Any ideas for a silencing lubricant that's safe for the leather? - -The rear defroster wire which runs along the back hatch under the glass is displaced from its retaining groove; and worse, the insulation is frayed in several areas. Is this a DIY fix, or does this cross into dealer territory? - -The windshield float sensor is moving properly in the washer reservoir tank, but the OBC is chiming "Washer Fluid Low." Any hints on how to correct this? Rather than constantly barrage this list with these seemingly ridiculous questions, are all the answers to items like the above to be found in the Bentley's manual? Thanks again to this great list of BMW enthusiasts for all your help. I am waiting for BMW (and others) to eventually put a "PC" in the car straight from the factory that in between driving the car for us will play mp3s from PC CD-ROMs ;-) I have used laptop-connected-to-line-input set up with my 93 325(cleaner than inputting through that cassette thingy) but gave up in favor of burning my own CD compilations. It is cheaper (<$1 per CD-ROM) but more importantly sounds better (for certain type of music). But if you develop a device that will allow me to hook up my MP3 files using line-in to BMW's latest interpretation of car radio form factor, I would be interested. Luck. I'm scared to death for some odd reason to do this mail order deal. I know all I have to do, is call Pacific BMW. Can anyone shed some light on this stuff? 1) Power Antenna stays up. The little motor hums alright, but fails to pull down the antenna when i shut the radio off. If you manually push the base of the antenna down a little when shutting off the radio, it catches, and goes down fine, and goes up fine too. But the problem starts all over again. 2) Tachometer Back-lighting. At night, the right side of the main gauge cluster (the tach etc...) occasionally goes dark. However, when I tap on it with my knuckle, the back lighting comes back. Any easy way to fix this? Also, the heater/AC unit's back lighting has never worked. 3) The driver's side rear tail light. Similar to the tachometer back lighting, occasionally at night, I'll get a tail light (brake light) warning on the overhead panel. Sure enough the driver's side rear tail light is out. But if I tap it with my knuckle, it pops right back on. 4) Brake lining warning light. Last year, I had an independent shop re-do all the brakes. He got the new disks (the old ones were cracked toast), I supplied the pads and sensors. 8 months later the brakes work fine, but now I get an intermittent "brake lining" idiot light warning. Bad sensor, bad idiot light? How do I check? 5) Starting the car, long cranking time. The car runs great, and has never failed to start, but the starting time is almost always very long... probably about 5-7 seconds of cranking. I've been in other E30's and they fire right up in an instant. What are the usual causes for long cranking times? Fuel delivery system? Thanks in advance for any wisdom. Power antenna, the nylon gear strip inside is stripped, buy a new mast and replace it. It could also be the gearing inside so I'd pull the old mast out first to check it out. My 325 didn't have a mast when I got it so no experience doing this. You'll need to pull the cluster I think to get at the bulb in the Tach, clean and grease the contacts on the cluster and bulb (use plain axle grease - really). It could also be the filament in the bulb so it might be best to just get new bulbs and pop in several while the cluster is out. Do use the grease on 'em. Tail light is same as above. Brake lining light, check the wires for being fully snapped together, make sure the sensor was installed the right way around. You'd be amazed. Hard starting. Mine did this worst shortly after being shut off but always a little harder than it should be. It turned out to be leaking injectors that let the pressure bleed down in the fuel system and at the same time flooded several cylinders. I opted for a new set of injectors and didn't really have to pay all that much for 'em. We are talking about a company that still puts tape decks into $50k cars by default...Even a Honda Civic EX comes standard with a CD Head unit now.... Outside of all of that, Audio companies are WAAAAY behind when it comes to MP3 technology. When at the LA Auto Show in January of this year, I stopped by the Alpine booth and inquired as to when they were going to have an in car MP3 player... The Alpine rep's response was "A.... A what?"... A friend of mine used a portable MP3 player which plugged into a fairly old Sony CD Head unit he had. The Sony head unit had a 1/4 inch stero input for a walkman. He used this input to connect the MP3 player. ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #570 ************************** _________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Bonneville Motorwerks . http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com | Circle Tire Co.
