Ah, one I can answer:

>Can anyone tell me why E-28s have a seperate a/c blower while same year 3
>series don't?Any advantages or disadvantges to this system? Thanks...
>
>Keith
>85 535i

Keith - can we say "afterthought" as in "Han's those damn American's
want airconditioning - slap something in there to shut them up!"

Disadvantages:

1. ONLY recirculate mode with AC on - so that nice stale air
is coooooolll... and stale.

2. Can't combine heat with AC for quick defrostings, in fact,
can't direct AC outta any of the heat vents

3. If the evaporator goes, or the expansion valve, accept that
the entire vehicle must be disassembled to replace it - they
placed these in mid-air and assembled the car around them.

4. Ditto the blower

5. Which is NOISY - as in windnoise sorta thing since the intake
is RIGHT below the radio and the output RIGHT above the radio..
which was not very listenable if the system was on high speed.

6. The system was marginal at best, I had an '87 bronzit/natural 535i
it could just keep the temps in the '80's in the interior on really
hot days. A black/black would be impossible (there is the story of
BMW finally realizing that temperatures/environment is different in
the USA than Bavaria - and sending 2 engineers across Death Valley
in an E28, black - with the windows disabled. Supposedly the 'improved'
AC system [dunno what exactly was improved about it] was the result.
I think it's just a story - the system was still marginal when they
killed the E28 in 1988)

Advantages:

1. None, zilch, nada.

Just onna those reasons I've always thought the E34 was a MUCH
more modern car.. the E28's ergonomics (the AC, the 10 button
seat controls) were outta date the day the car first appeared,
any Japanese maker who'd released those designs in 1983 would
still be living it down.

Sorry - 'dems just my opinions, but I lived with one for about
4 years after having an absolutely wonderful fully automatic HVAC
in an '86 Toyoto Supra Turbo.. a throughly modern, temperature
sensitive, integrated system which worked flawlessly..

The E34 system caught up with the rest of the world as state of
the art was known in about 1985 or so..

(And the M-Coupe takes a retro-step backwards to some extent..
can't control the temperature from the face level vents except
WITH the temperature of the rest of the system, but at least it
is ONE system, ONE fan, and you can get AC & heat from all/any
of the vents).. it is 'acceptable' in capacity since I had the
ECU [believe it or not - the Motronic controls part of the AC!]
reprogrammed - on a Boston Green, black/grey interior coupe)

Best,

I think what Ben is doing is called De-Duaneing the M3. So far he's
removed everything you upgraded to, d'oh. Including those gorgeous
FM10's. Sheesh Ben.

I hear a re-paint is upcoming. ;-)

Yeah but it's no fun having a rolly-polly stock ride. Besides,
aftermarket parts are all always painted in kewl colors.

Hey what are you doing replying to the list when you should be in San

Huh? Seems to me that I can, either in the old ones I had or the "end of the line"
'88.

Strong disagreement here! My two '85s, when charged by a shop that knew what they were
doing, would blow nice and frosty. Never needed the a/c on the '86. My '88 will
usually
blow even colder (although O'Fest '99 heat did tax it, it *is* black-on-black).

With modern pricing. Heater control valve repair kit for the E28 = $11. Replacement
part
for the E34, $110. Still won't blow air exactly where you want it, at least the E28
can
be beaten into submission.

I miss the simplicity of my Alfa GTV6 - Two knobs, fan and temp. You opened the vents
you
wanted air to come from, that's it.

Unfortunately I don't get SpeedVision and local cable doesn't cover any GOOD
racing (sorry to the NASCAR/TRUCK fans). I saw the results of the race on
ESPN2 though and was curious. They showed Villeneuve and stated the car
type as "BAR". What does that stand for? I recognized all the rest but
this perplexed me.

We just received Speedvision on our cable network here in Northern
NJ...didn't even have to buy a dish. My initial viewing yesterday was a
bit disappointing (live coverage of the Weinerdog Nationals) until I
realized I had tuned to Animal Planet (another new station on Cablevision)
instead of Speedvision. Watching the F1 race this morning instead of Bob
Vila reruns was a pleasant change of pace. SD

Not too long ago there were some reasonably credible reports that BMW's
senior management was underwhelmed by the new compact, and canned it during
its final stages. But now Rover is gone, and with the success of the A2 and
the continuing success of the A-class, I wonder if it will be given a
reprieve?

Subject: [uuc] New shocks for M3/325i

I've got a 94 325i to which I've retrofit a 95 M3 suspension (a great
upgrade by the way). It's now time for some new shocks/struts, and it seems
the most common aftermarket option for an M3 suspension are bilstein sport
shocks/struts. This seems that a reasonable option, but I'm looking for some
guidance--will these be similar to the stock M3 shocks/struts or will there
be a major ride change? I'm not really interested in something that's too
much stiffer as I must negotiate the streets of Washington, DC.

Also, while I'm doing the shock/strut swap out I might as well take care of
any other suspension items. I plan to replace the strut bearings and the
shock mounts--anything else I should do at the same time? Thanks.

Dave,

Can't really answer the first question without knowing the car and tires
(assuming it's the 99 328i on the S-02's) then the pressures are good
starting points - also depends somewhat on weather and track conditions.
Re: Follow-on question - street driving pressures. I use 35 front and 34
rear on my 96 328i running 235/40-17 on the Fikse Mach 5. Seems to work
pretty well.

Re second question. Yes you will use up some of the S-02s on the drive, but
you'll be much happier and enjoy the ride much more than if you do it on
winter tires.
