Your ride will get harsher. Noticeably. But on the other hand if you go with Bilstein HD units and stay with the M3 Springs, it will just be an improvement. When ordering whatever shock you decide on, be sure and specify 95 M3 and not 94 325 components. They are different as you know. If you don't want a harsher ride, leave the springs alone. Sway bar upgrades are a ppopular improvement if you think the car rolls too much in turns. An X-brace under the front steering rack is also a relatively cheap and noticeable upgrade. If you have the budget for it, a Dinan Stage whatever-you-feel-like, is an improvement that has all the shopping done for you without being overly harsh. I was at Road Atlanta a few years ago with my H**da Civ** ITC car. A rookie driver in a well-used 2002 ITB car left a box of spares in the trunk. As a fellow ITC driver was following this 2002 down the back straight and into the late and famous "dip," the aluminum trunk floor (the original trunk floor had rusted out) gave out and the box of spares went crashing onto the track, at 100 mph. My pal swerved to miss the brake rotors, calipers, etc. and not knowing that these were spares, he thought the 2002 was falling apart, going down the track! Have a good neighbor with a chance to buy an (E32 ? ) '88 735 i with about 80K miles on it. Cosmetic seems excellent condition, tires are good, has not noticed any thing clearly broken or not working. VIN is WBAG84310J3202614. What can you folks tell me (for my neighbor) about this car/model ? Problems, Weak spots, frequent known failures, What should he look for, what should he expect - any known transmission problems, self leveling suspension ?, Any constructive inputs provided will be greatly appreciated . Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 23:14:27 -0400 From: "Duane Collie" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Michelin Pilot Sport REVIEW I put a set of Michelin's newest hot tires....Pilot Sports on the Seven Sled in 18" size. These look like a Bridgie S-02 clone for the most part. Not that its a bad thing for the S-02 is a tire I've always liked a lot. I torture-tested the Pilot Sports today on the 740i. Autocross? Track? Aggressive Canyon Racing? Wet Cornering? ....... Nope. I took 'em muddin' <big ole grin>. Seems were out lookin' at the new future homestead and instead of taking the Gland Bruiser, we was in the Sled. 'Bout halfway into the lot there was about 50' of mud on the mostly gravel road. My wife said, "Lets go home and get the 4WD so we don't get stuck." The kids said...."GO FOR IT DAD!" (always loving the opportunity to do a bit of fishtailing)......I said, "We can make it." I dropped the car into SPORT mode and gassed it. YEEEeeeeee-haaaaaaaaaa.....those Michelin Sports gumballed up that Virginia Red Clay and slung it all over the car with nary a misstep. We blasted though to the other side with Mrs. Collie shaking her head while the kids squealed with glee. On the way back, I did the exact same thing and we spit mud outta the tires for at least 1/2 a mile once we hit the highway again. When we got home my neighor (who had just come back from an autocross) wandered over and said, "Where the hell have you been with that car? I can't hardly tell what color it is anymore." I told him we had to do a little mud-boggin'. He said, "You are not supposed to do that in luxury prestige cars, especially when you have a Land Cruiser in the garage to use." I responded, "I think it looks good muddy. Shows it ain't no disco car, ya know? I think I'll leave it muddy for a few days, too." He just shook his head as he went back to takin' off his R1's. Anyways, I can report that Michelin Pilot Sports make a decent mud tire, the aggressive tread pattern being mostly self-cleaning of the goop. I know a lotta ya'll can really make good use of that bit of info....Now then, where do you suppose I could mount an electric winch on the Sled? - - Duane C. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Apr 1994 20:41:03 -0700 From: "Ben Dixon" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] 1985 E30 323i starting woes? I just purchased a 1985 323i and am having some problems getting it to start like a BMW should. (takes about 8-10 seconds to fire up and when it does it stumbles for a few seconds before rising up to a good idle) The only time it starts right is when it is very cold, say 25-30 degrees. I live in Grants Pass, OR. and have only had a few mornings that cold since I bought the car. Even when it would start good, by the time the day was over and I would get ready to leave the shop it would be back to it's old tricks. One more thing when it does fire up it runs very rich for a few seconds. The motor runs great as soon as it runs it's just this annoying start up problem I would like to fix. Also while I have your ear can you give me some suggestions as to why my temp gauge does not work? When I turn the key on it just barely moves the needle and the entire time I'm driving the car it does not register! Does it sound like a cold start valve problem, or should I be looking at maybe a temp sending problem since it seems to start fine in arctic conditions? Thanx for any and all help you can offer. ben ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 23:32:58 -0400 From: "James Sheridan-Peters" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Michelin Pilot Sport REVIEW > lotta ya'll can really make good use of that bit of info....Now then, where > do you suppose I could mount an electric winch on the Sled? (LOL) Replacing the evaporator coil isn't THAT tough...at least as far as anything involving removal of dash components is "not hard." I once removed my evaporator coil to clean it...it was encrusted with dark horrible material that emitted swamp gas. In fact I remember what appeared to be an entire ecosystem in that evaporator sump. > 4. Ditto the blower The A/C blower is really easy. The heater blower is tougher. A lot tougher. > The E34 system caught up with the rest of the world as state of > the art was known in about 1985 or so.. The E28 and E34 HVAC systems/controls are remarkably similar with only a few (very key) odd-ons. Both systems are rather unique, and I really don't know how or by whom "state-of-the-art" is defined. The E28 HVAC system and controls are entirely adequate. YMMV. Enjoy your posts, Don--especially your rock solid consistency with the mebbe, prolly, and onna usages...
