The lease on the car expires May 1 and I need to remove the M3 suspension. I've gotten a quote for $450, but I hope to do better (no sense pouring money into the car now that the lease is expiring). The consensus is that you have two choices: 1. go with K-Macs and keep your car streetable. In this plate the bearing is incased in polyurethane providing enough flexing to survive the duty on the public roads. The down side of K-Macs is that they are a). higher then all steel camber plates - a bad thing if you are trying to keep COG as low as possible; b). a bit less adjustable (up to three degrees of negative camber) and more giving then fixed steel/aluminum camber plates 2. go with custom "fixed" (no-play) camber plates and keep the car off the public roads. Without polyurethane enclosure, these camber plates will last under 10K miles before needing replacement. 10K race miles is plenty, but they run out way too fast on public roads for dual purpose cars. Now, before I go out and order a set of K-Macs: does anyone want to part with their old E30 K-Mac camber plates? TIA, alex f P.S: FYI: http://www.bmw2002.com/ and http://www.turnermotorsport.com/ offer both types of camber plates. Places like http://www.ground-control.com/ make their own 'type-2' camber plates ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 12:17:54 -0700 (PDT) From: Carlos Lopez <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] <wob> Finding parts locally I called a local import parts store to purchase a universal 3-wire 02 sensor. I knew they carried Bosch parts and they had one in stock. I seem to remember threads in the past that this is a Mustang 02 sensor? Nothing unusual. Anyhoo just for kicks I asked them if they had a cap & rotor for an E30 M3, well holy cow! They had it in stock! Mind you the dealerships around here don't even carry these parts. Weird or what? I can count in one hand the number of E30 M3's I've seen driving in the Detroit area. Boyce" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] <E30> differential swap Yesterday, Geoff Patterson and I installed a 3.25 LSD in lieu of an open stock differential in my Eta. The process went fairly smoothely, though it wound up taking longer than anticipated (~3.5 hrs.). Some notes, in a random order: - - getting the old diff out was a piece of cake, once we had the four rear axle carrier bolts loosened. But boy, were those four a bear! - - the old diff appeared to have some leakage around the pass. side output flange. - - my speed sensor is different from the one that came with the new diff (it had a backing plate from an '87-ish 325i). Both fit into the diff identically, but the old one used two flat prongs at 90-degrees to each other, while the new one had two circular pins. - - both diffs had the E30 M3 solid rubber mounting bushing. Anyone know why this is? - - installation was the reverse of removal, though we did encounter a cross-threaded bolt (mea culpa, I think) on the axle carrier - - getting the bolt holes in the output flanges to line up with the inner CV joints took some thinking. The first one was easy (just turn the input shaft), but I was thinking that we wouldn't be able to do that with the second one because of the limited-slip. Well, I was wrong; Geoff was able to turn the input shaft and get the second output flange to line up correctly. - - brake bleeder pumps (the plastic suction pump deals with a pressure gauge) work great to put new fluid into the diff. Just don't try and bleed your brakes with it afterwards... :-) Results? The car definitely goes up through the gears quicker. There's about a 400 rpm difference at highway speeds (~70 mph). I can also spin the wheels in first now (FWIW). However, the sensation of building speed in a single gear (like flooring it in 5th on the highway) is gone -- instead, the revs just quickly build. So, the character of the car is definitely changed. I'd be happy to pass on any knowledge gleaned from this experience to any of you other E30 people looking to change your diff. And...anyone looking to buy a 2.76 open diff? :-) KC Boyce '85 325e --> New, Improved! Carlos, I am not looking for a fixed change in camber. I need _adjustable_ camber plates so that I can set the car up for any track/course. However, I did notice a fairly dramatic improvement in body-flex reduction (more so on my 325, than my M3). Where the improvement is really most noticeable is during initial turn-in. I had incrementally installed Eibach springs, then Bilsteins HD's, then Eibach sways, and then the sub-frame brace on the 325. With each upgrade, I obviously noticed an improvement in handling. However, I was really surprised to find that the sub-frame brace was the most "noticeable" improvement - for $150.00, it's a great value, easy to install, and does not require the additional expense of an alignment!!
