Larry, the illumination pattern emitted by the headlights, both hi and lo beam, is not a function of the bulb wattage, but rather a function of the lens facets, bulb filament placement in relation to to the reflector focal point, and reflector shape. The wattage determines the how many photons are emitted, not their their placement on the street. So what does all this mean relative to your question? Even if you put lower wattage bulbs in your hi beams, they would still be shining in the eyes of oncoming traffic, just not as brightly. Is that the effect for which you are looking? Probably not. We had a chance to go to a rug show in sanFrancisco, and since I had just traded for an '83 533i we took that. There were minor difugalties with the shift coupling, but I kludged a fix at it and off we went. Folks, I lost track of how just how beautifull this country is. We kinda got carried away and came back to Oregon from SF via Palm Springs, the Grand Canyon, and Utah. The area from Kingman Az to the Grand Canyon is absolutely incredible. Now I think Oregon is an amazing state, and I enjoy all the different shades of green that can be seen here, but in Arizona Mama Earth is stripped bare and free of the veils of vegetation I'm used to. She's a raw boned, spraddle legged stripper, all ribs and elbows and knees and nipples - and then you see the grand canyon.... It's true by the way - drag your self out of bed and look into the mother ditch at dawn. My brain just shut down and refused to believe that at least SOME part of that canyon wasn't a Hollywood backdrop. On a BMW note, Arizona and Utah have very civilized 75mph speed limits. The car got us home. Granted, cruise quit, the air conditioner wouldn't, there is an intermittent buzzing noise from the area of the driver's side sunroof cable, an oil leak had an Oregon station attendant back away from the car with gas hose in hand - had to reassure her that the car wasn't really on fire - smoke rolling out of the front fender well is just a German ah..feature. I need to beat on the left rear fender lip because it rubs the 225 16 tire on every bounce in the road. Sunroof stuck closed (TWO stripped small screws on the cable cover - not my work thankyou - allowed the cover to jam the sunroof from coming back). Let's see... oh yeah, the cassette player suffered from brain fade and forgot how to eject a tape or play it or the radio on a few occasions. HOWEVER, after loading up with 3 gallons (in the trunk - I was driving)of cheaper-than-Oregon booze and a few cubic feet of Utah sandstone (true fact) the headlights illuminated the stars nicely and lots of dr! ivers started signaling me with their lights and flipping me a jaunty California wave as they went by. What a friendly country! Most of them weren't even driving BMWs either! Overall mpg for 3261 miles was 24.1. Don't even ask about the oil. A local nonBMW dealership has the air working now and I'm running some dye in the oil - not looking good - the duck gasket I replaced seems to be dry and suspicion is centering on the back of the headgasket. 12.2 hours flat rate for the headgasket. Wondering just how much time I want to invest in this car. Friends are starting to refer to my non-driving time spent with the car as my "enthusiating" time. It's only a matter of time before they start saying things about "the ultimate non-driving machine". HAH! I don't care - it's an adventure, and when it goes - it goes gooooood. Kumho's have 205/55/14. Hooseir's have 225/50/14, but you will need at least 7" wide wheel to fit those. To answer your original question, 185/60/14 BFGs would fit, but they will be both too narrow (not a particularly good thing) and too tall (not a good thing either). alex f P.S.: 6x14 alloy (bottlecap style): 7.5kg (16.5 lb) 6.5x14 alloy (cross spoke): 6.35kg (13.97 lb) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 14:50:16 -0400 From: "Henry Caldwell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Carfax Reports >Why are all these people on here and other boards asking for these reports. >If you are that cheap and can't afford to spend $14, then you shouldn't be >buying a BMW. I've isolated it and it's coming from the vacuum assist can. It sounds like a rubber boot rubbing against an actuator, and happens when the motor is running or not. The brakes perform perfectly--no squishiness or unusual travel. Has anyone had a similar noise or can anyone guess what's wrong? I am, of course, hoping the whole unit does not need replacement as I'm guessing that would be major dollars. TIA. I hope to someday give back as much as I've received from this list. At least I'll be posting some pictures soon on my web site. And I thought it was 195/60/14 in early production. You can get lots of cheap 185/60/14s because of all the VW and CRX cars used that as a factory +1 for the 175/70/13 (or 155r13) stock sizes. The 195/60s are a few dollars more, 195/65 are a few more (at which point the 205/60s are a good thought). Your speedo is very optimistic with them, and again you're giving up some width (and, to some degree, lateral grip) versus 195/60s. OTOH, narrower tires allow a lower limit of adhesion, meaning you're not at YASF speeds when they let go. - Thi - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 14:35:30 -0500 From: "Brent Williams" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] How much is a M3 takeoff suspension worth? When I was drivers school coordinator I would have preferred the release to be notarized but who am I. You have a drivers license right??? Not a learners permit! Not sure what other chapters allow minors with a release. I believe the reason for the signed parental release is because you are not old enough legally to sign the waiver. The waiver from liability makes everyone feel good. However, I am not sure if the waiver is worth the paper it is written on if the chapter is sued. Never use to worry about lawsuits until that idiot Clinton removed the protection Federal employees had from wage garnishments except for child support and taxes a few years ago.
