The reduced brightness is a result of reduced voltage. This may cause a
problem with halogen headlight bulbs, it may cause a major reduction in
their life span. It has to do with the halogen cycle that occurs within the
bulbs when they operate properly within a limited range of voltage. The
tungsten alloy filament actually vaporizes to a very small degree the whole
time it operates. If the voltage is right the vapor condenses back on the
filament at a rate that almost equals the evaporation rate. Change the
voltage and the cycle brakes down, resulting in short bulb life.

Hi all,

For those who want to run the headlights at, reduced brightness
during the day, check out Ron Francis Wire Works

http://www.ronfrancis.com/

if you go to:

http://www.ronfrancis.com/B1.asp

and hit "next" about 10 times (bad website design Ron!)

you will find the

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT KITS

PART # DL-20 "Turns vehicle headlights on automatically in day time
at reduced voltage" $49.00

Francis makes good stuff.

DRL's made a huge difference in the number of cars pulling in front
of me and otherwise making dangerous maneuvers.

I might have the terminology wrong, but is the A-pillar the one that holds the
front windshield in? Has anyone run a wire from the kick panel area to the
sunroof area? Is it difficult? Is it a matter of fishing a wire or must you
dismantle stuff?

Any pointers? Links?

TIA,
Chester

Chester brought up something I'm not sure of... what are all the pillars
correctly referred to?

Sides of windshield: (I thought this was the A-pillar)
Sides of rear windshield: (C pillar?)
Along the back of my door, the one the 8er's don't have: (B pillar?)

Somebody set me straight!

you can pop off the panel covering the pillar...that'll make it a lot easier than
stuffing the wire under the side of the panel...it's fairly easy...and since
chester asked if that was the A pillar...what's the B-pillar??? thanx...

Not an authority - but I play one on TV

A, B, C - from front to back. Does a touring have a D pillar?

Subject: [uuc] [E30] 325i White guages *Group Purchase*

Hey gruppes,
I've talked to a supplier in the UK about ordering a group of white guage
faces for E30 325i models. They've said that they can work out a cheaper
rate if we order a group of at least 10. So, I'm calling all the E30'ers
out there who want to freshen up their guage clusters to speak up and get in
touch with me. The guage faces are made of high quality plastic and replace
your stock faces. You can see a picture of my friend's cluster at the
following link...

http://members.tripod.com/bimmersteven/images/whitedash.gif

*Please note: he added the "M-Technic" sticker onto the tachometer, the
faces do not come with that. They do come with installation instructions
and all you need to put them in. Email me privately, off the lists, if
you're interested and I'll see what kind of interest these generate.

Thanks alot,

Steve Reed

Loved your story Tom! Especially the last bit. I know exactly how you
feel. I've only had my current bimmer since Feb, and I've grown quite
attached to it. Speaking of which, we just came back from supper at
A&W's (where else would you go with a 4 year old?) where I commented
that I was getting fond of the 5er. My SO rolled her eyes and sighed
a sigh that said, "looks like I know where Chris will be spending
(almost) every spare minute and cent."

It's burning oil and needs a tune-up, sunroof and passanger window do
not open, driver's seat is a little saggy, antenna does not go down,
right side speakers work when they want to, temperature guage has a
life of its own... but other than those little things, we get 30 mpg
and when you stomp on the gas the little-six comes to life instantly
and we are soon at redline (which isn't hard in a 528e).

I think I'll admire those boxy lines a bit before bedtime :-b

Subject: [uuc] I think I REALLY screwed up!

OK, never fails. I don't trust 90% of the
garages to do basic to medium work on my car so I
try to do it myself. So I set in to replace my
radiator, fan clutch, and water pump on my 1991
525i. All goes well until I go to install the
new water pump. As I'm tightening the 4 nuts
that hold the pump to the block, I'm thinking
"hmmmm these seem a little small, better be
careful as to not break one of these off...one
more tighten...." snap!!!! If I were the
swearing type, I'd have let out a list that would
have rivaled George Carlin's 7 dirty words you
can't say on TV (at least until a few years
ago)...but I digress. OK, so now I'm sitting
with 3 out of 4 nuts holding the new water pump
on and decide to continue to put it all back
together. Pulley, new fan clutch on the new
water pump, new radiator..the whole bit. So, I'm
driving around with a water pump with only 3 out
of 4 nuts holding it on. Seems OK, but I guess
it's ust not the same as having all 4 even nuts
holding the sucker on. Am I setting myself up
for a catastrophe? If this lets loose, I'll
proly end up with a whole list of broken
pieces...radiator, fan, fan clutch, possibly more
right? Anyone have any comments either way?
Where would I find a good set of studs to replace
the 4 (now 3)? or... am I being a bit crazy and
the 3 should be fine?

Steve D? got 4 titanium studs?

thoughts?

Subject: [uuc] <e36> new tapping noise

I'm hoping for some encouragement but fear the worse. My '94 325i with 120K,
and a lifetime of Mobil 1 every 5K miles, has developed a tap, heard loudest
near Cyl 1. I can find no evidence of a cracked exhaust manifold or blown
manifold gasket from any angle, so I'm down to having to - what- pull the
head? Is there a chance that something in the timing chain area would cause
a taping noise?

Any thoughts? And I thought that not-quite-steady idle problem in my E30 was
a pain...

Thanks,
