Subject: [uuc] speeding ticket

Hi all,

I was driving my BMW on a beautiful sunny day one
weekend when I saw a little black blip in my rear view
mirror. That little blip quickly became bigger and
bigger. I thought that might be a CHP so I slowed
down. I was right, but it was too late. I was pulled
over and given a speeding citation. This incident
happened in LA county, CA.

I was cited for violating 22348(b) of the Vehicle Code
- - Speed in excess of 100 MPH. As I understand it now,
this is a serious violation and is considered much
more than just a regular speeding ticket.

I did a little research, and it seems like they give 2
points instead of 1 for this vioation. What will the
insurance company think/do? Will they refuse to renew
my policy, or hike my rate up to stratospheric levels?
Will my liscence get suspended? Does anyone know
what are the ramifications? What can/should I do?
Should I hire an attorney? If so, can someone please
give me a referral (for LA county)? I don't know what
to do.

This post may not have too much to do with bimmers
besides that fact I was in one at the time, but I have
no other source to turn to for advice. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
A fellow BMW enthusiast

How fast were you actually going, and what was the speed limit? I personally don't
want to get involved since I'm not that knowledgable about tickets having only two in
my life. Plus you didn't give your real name so I don't know if you're a cop or
insurance adjuster or ??? You never know who's monitoring these things, call me
suspicious. One thing I can recommend: buy a Valentine One.

Well, frankly no I don't. I've been having chronic trouble with air in my
brake lines before the installation of the Speedbleeders. Actually, that's
what inspired me to buy them in the first place. If you're implying that
you've had problems with Speedbleeders in brake systems then I would
appreciate (and I think the list...) your constructive thoughts and
experiences instead of the dry wit you are trying to impart to us.

I have found the product to work exactly as the manufacturer states and I
can see no way that air would infiltrate into the system through that method
assuming the product is working correctly and operated according to the
instructions. I found that I needed to press the brake pedal quite firmly
to overcome the resistance of the checkvalves when bleeding. This tells me
that air being introduced into the system via the Speedbleeder is very, very
unlikely.

Anyone else please feel free to express your opinions of the Speedbleeder
product or comments on my original post.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> AC not cold

After a winter of non-use, I've discovered that the air conditioning in my
89 325i isn't blowing cold. Here's what I know so far:

- - blue snowflake light lights up as it should
- - compressor is turning (drag on engine and change in idle speed confirms it)
- - fan blowing OK

The Bentley isn't too much help. Any internet sources on what to check, or
common problems I can look at myself?

Thanks,
Chris

Subject: [uuc] <e30> Name that Wiring Harness!

While removing, mucking about with, and replacing the interior light relay
in my '89 325i today, I discovered a stray (i.e. unplugged and hanging
there) connector under the drivers side dashboard. I'd like to know if it
supposed to be hooked up to something! The car is working fine, there are
no obvious signs of a disconnect.

Here are the details

- - female, orange coloured, six pin connector
- - only 5 of 6 pinholes are occupied with brass inserts
- - I thought there were 5 wires, but only wrote down the colours of 4:
White/Black, Black/Gree, Red/Black, Brown/Black
- - it may or may not be labelled "18"

There was no obvious male mate dangling about. Any ideas what this might
be for?

The driver's seat cushion cover is due for replacement in my '86 528e. The
dealer wants $98 for a replacement velour cover. I checked with Wholesale
Upholstery & Trim, and if I'm reading this price list correctly, they want
$133 for the part. As the subject line suggests, I'm looking for a velour
cover. Does anyone have suggestions other than the dealer for this part?

Hi Chris,

It sounds like your system is low on Freon. You can check this by looking
for the sight glass that's up near the passenger (US) side front.just behind
the headlight assembly. Check it out in the Bentley. Clean off the sight
glass window and start up the car and run the AC. Look closely into the
glass window. If you see bubbles there or foam then your system is low. If
you don't see anything perceptable then most likely your system is full. A
certified garage can certainly tell you for sure.

I bought my '90 325i last summer and is was very low on Freon. I verified
it through the sight glass and had a local Pep Boys Garage refill it with
R-12. You can retrofit the system for the new Freon (R-234 I think...?) but
I've heard that retrofitting ends up with an AC system that doesn't cool as
well. It wasn't designed for that refrigerant so the evaporator coils are
undersized.

Others may have better opinions on this than myself....

Yes, they share the same motor for EPA reasons (it's cheaper and easier to
get 1 motor to pass testing than 2, especially when said motor is pretty
spry
anyway).

'is trim cars come with LSD, sports seats, spoilers, suspension and 14x6.5
basketweaves standard.

Similarly, the 535is shares its motor with its 535i brethren in the E28, but
is
better equipped (in my opinion) with the standard sports stuff.

I know that the M20 B27 is the eta engine, so I know that's wrong. Is the
M20 B25 Motronic in both the 325i and the 325is? I'm thinking that maybe the
"s" in "is" only means sport suspension, body styling, and maybe interior
mods. Am I right?

Bill Noren is spot-on about checking the sight glass. Nothing can also
indicate that you have absolutely nuttin' in the system, which is unlikely
since it worked last year.

I also it wasn't as cold, but having had it done in my '87 325i here in
Austin, TX,
I can attest that the R134a system is bitchin' cold in OUR summers, which
means
cold enough. And the cost of R-12 equalled the cost of converting to R134a,
which
I can refill later myself if necessary, heaven forbid.

After you get it fixed, make sure to crank on the AC at least once a month
to keep
the seals lubed in cool weather (above 40 F). Helps keep 'er going.
Similarly, run
the heat once a month in warm weather to help the heater core stay alive.
