Hello all,

I have question about wires for spark plugs for my 316
'86 (similar like e21 318). I don't know which
resistance should I use for it and how to measure it.
I'll be glad to hear any suggestions.
Thanks

I just pulled what I guess is the OE radiator from my 87 535is due to a
broken plastic inlet. I was amazed at the amount of dirt that came from the
cooling fins! After seeing this, I have to recommend a good cleaning every
now and then to keep the cooling at the best performance. But why I'm
writing this is to ask if there is a difference in having this one rebuilt
(like from Jim's or Reseda), or buying a new one. If I do go with a new one,
is there a noticeable difference in an aftermarket one or should I stick with
a Bher? A couple of advertisers in the Roundel are offering new ones for
$210 - $220 and new Bher's at $260.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Timing Belt Noises

I've had a 'squeaky' noise coming from the front of my engine for some time now.
I finally isolated the problem to the casing behind the crankshaft
damper/pulley, and I'm assuming that it is the timing belt that is making the
noise (it sounds a lot like a sqeaky belt). My question is: what does this tell
me about the belt? Is it squeaking because it's loose? Is it normal for it to
make some noise? Can I do anything about it besides replacing it (it's pretty
annoying)? FWIW: I relaced the belt about three years and 40k miles ago. Thanks
for the help!

Hey all,

Is it possible to reset the SRS light in a '92 325is?

My guess is that I need to bring it to the local dealer to get it
reset....

I was washing under the hood (bye bye dirt and salt) and I think I hit
one of the airbag crash sensors (drivers side) with a little too much
water....

Thanks,
Justin

Geoff is concerned about the ol' M20 tbelt:

<<I've had a 'squeaky' noise coming from the front of my engine for some
time now.....Is it squeaking because it's loose? Is it normal for it to make
some noise?>>

Based on my experience, it is not loose, it is likely caused by
contamination somewhere around the belt. This could be a leak from the
coolant pump, the crank seal, the cam seal, possible even the valve cover
gasket. Given that my car has 140k+ on it the head gasket area has started
to "weep" a bit, this could also cause that over time. When I bought my car
this noise became quite loud and I was worried something needed to be
replaced so I went in and did the whole deal....coolant pump, tensioner
pulley, belt, and some other things. I didn't replace any of the seals and
have since learned that they're just fine. Anyway, the belt only had ~10k
on it so it wasn't old. After replacing all that stuff all was quiet....for
a while. Then the noise came back. I have now quite worrying about it as I
really don't see any problems although it is annoying. The age/mileage of
the belt is not bad but you could replace it, you have about 10k left tops
(to be safe). My recommendation is during replacement inspect the seals,
try to find out if/where there is a leak. Coolant pumps can leak if the
gasket is not sealed well. I have learned that a gasket sealer is defiately
the way to go...never again will I replace a gasket without it!

You can check out my website for my write up (with pics, under
repairs/maintenance) when I did mine. If you have any other questions feel
free to ask! Good luck!

I just went through the brake pad decision process after getting some
fade on my cheap-o part store pads at a big fast autocross, and I bought
the R4-S. Haven't driven on them yet -- but I made my decision based on
this excellent source of information:

Subject: [uuc] Nail in tire

All,

I just found out I have a nail in my left rear tire. I know this subject
has been discussed before, but what would be the best way to deal with
this? I have a '92 325i with Michelin MXV4+ and the stock wheels. The
nail is only causing a slow leak at this point so I have some time to
deal with the problem. Also, if someone could recommend a good tire shop
in the SF Bay Area preferably near San Jose/Sunnyvale/Cupertino, I'd
appreciate it.

Thanks,

Subject: [uuc] E36 alarm false alarms & a/c sight glass & FS:K&N

I have a couple of questions and a FS:

First, does anyone have info about or a copy of TSB 651696, which covers
false alarms caused by the factory E36 alarm glass breakage sensor (this is
for the Alpine-supplied alarm for late 1995 and on E36s). My alarm has twice
gone off for no reason at 3 & 4 am in the past couple of weeks. Also, info
on how to adjust the DIP switches to reduce sensitivity and what the setting
should be on an E36 coupe would be appreciated (the alarm owner's manual
doesn't cover this).

Second, can anyone tell me where the a/c sight glass is on E36 M3s or E36s
generally? I can't find the damn thing, and suspect the car doesn't have
one.

Third, For Sale: K&N drop-in air filter for E36 M3 (I think this may
actually fit all E36s - not sure though). Used around 20k miles (good for
100); cleaned regularly. $25 includes US shipping and K&N filter cleaner
spray and oil (used twice, many uses left).

Remove the tire from the wheel. Use a mushroom shaped patch/plug to seal
the air from the inside and the water from the outside.

My experience - 1994 325i - with PF "Z" is as follows:

Installed pads all around - went to the Drivers School at Las Vegas (great time) and
shortly thereafter heard much rattle from the rear on the passenger side - turned out
that the "clips" had broken off of the rear pad. Called HMS - they called PF - no
recourse - "installer error"?? HMS did agree to sell me another set at a reduced
price.
Installed these - went to Laguna Seca (great time) and now some months later - broken
clips on rear again - more rattle. Replaced rear pad again.

YMMV.

Thanks for all of the responses! Here's some claification from my original post.

747 noise: I thought it was a tranny noise, but now I think it might have been engine
related. It happened most on acceleration, whether accelerating to upshift, or
accelerating just to speed up in-gear. However, with the clutch pedal down I could rev
the engine and it wouldn't make the sound so THAT makes me think it's tranny-related.
Very confusing. I guess the bottom line is that Bill Edgington told me it should be
smooth and quiet, so regardless of where it was coming from, it was bad news.

Cosmoline: That's good to know that the yellow is removable. Luckily for me I have a
friend who likes to detail cars. Buy him a 12-pack of Heineken and he'll get scrub
that cosmoline off with some Simple Green and a toothbrush.

Check Engine Light: what was flashing was in fact the CHECK light in the center of the
gauge cluster. No worries.

Thanks again for the feedback,

Just off the top of my head, it included slightly stiffer/shorter front
springs,
stiffer shocks, a larger 14.5mm rear swaybar, 15x7 ET24 BBS Cross-Spokes
with 205/55-15 tires, special one-piece rear lower apron/bumper cover,
special front lower apron but with separate front bumper cover with Euro
license plate indentation, special rocker panel extensions, a picnic-basket-
handle rear wing, and an M-Technic badge for the left side of the trunklid
:-)

I've seen a few factory M-Technic E30 convertibles in the past year running
around the L.A./South Bay area, but i've never seen a sedan. I have a few
Jpegs of cars with M-Technic body parts which shows how they look.

I have been driving my 72 (mostly) '02 for the last three
days at beautiful sunny (for a few minutes) Mosport. On the way back
to Toronto, not a peep from my older V1 (no laser). Crossing a
six-lane bridge about two blocks from home and running with the
traffic, a member of the local constabulary armed with a laser gun
leapt out and flagged me down. He said I was doing 77 kph (50 mph for
you Luddites in the states - think of the Mars lander) in a 50 kph
(30 mph) zone. I had shut off the Valentine and removed the velcroed
remote display by the time he got to the car. Radar detectors are
illegal in Ontario. Big fine and detector destroyed before your very
eyes.
He asked pleasantly if he could do a quick safety inspection
of the car and asked me to get out. I said sure, a bit concerned
about the track tires with little visible tread. I got out and he
gave a good stomp to the floor in front of the driver's seat. He
laughed and said - Your car's fine - You can go. Obviously a
sympathetic cop who knows about 2002's in the salt belt.
I have had the curious pleasure of instructing Ontario
Provincial Police and undercover cops at some advanced driving
schools at race tracks. They are generally good guys, and the women
learn faster. If I told you anything more...
