Subject: [uuc] Speaking of "hours"

Reminds me of a great Steve Wright joke (as best as I
can remember):

I was driving the other day and was pulled over by a
policeman. He walked up to the window and requested
license and registration. He than asked if I knew why
he pulled me over. I said no of course. He stated,
"Well, Mr. Wright you were exceeding the speed limit
of 55 mph." I replied, "Officer, I wasn't going to be
out for an hour."

I thought that was pretty funny at the time.

It's an interesting read but I think too much emphasis was put on the "ease

What is the general reaction to buying a 1991 525i with 237K miles and
auto trans? Price is very good, condition is tbd, but assume it is good
also. My significant other has the intitial reaction to run and hide,
but does have a hint of curiosity. Looking for the combined wisdom of
this group to decide if I should follow up and look at the car. It is
an hour drive away. It is for our son who is in college and may take
some long distance trips. I need reliability. TIA for any feedback.

Celisa,

If you actually drive your car, don't waste your time/money on Zymol. I
have used it before and can say it lasts about as long as it takes you
to put it on! Also, it doesn't look any better than some other waxes I
have used. My car is also black and I don't have any problem with swirls
using other waxes such as Griot's best of show, P21s or Blitz Wax. I
personally use and have had great results from using:

- -Griot's car wash & clay bar
- -3m Hand Glaze (polish)
- -P21s (wax around the trim with this as it won't leave white residue)
- -Griot's best of show elsewhere
- -Blitz for the winter (lasts longer in the rain)

If your car is black, definitely use a pure polish at least once a year
to bring out that deep black gloss.

If I remember correctly, Nippondenso/Sanden compressors go for around $300.
Behr/Bosch compressors are more expensive, but those are the ones (or some
of them) requiring replacement during R134a retrofit.
The kit without the compressor is $150 tops.
Labor runs another 2-3 hours (I forgot exactly, as I paid a flat
off-the-clock $100 to have everything done).
You do the math.

I have made a few changes to my 89 325is. I have put on an Alpina suspension and
wheels, a
new Alpine stereo, and now I am going to add the UUC shortshifter. What other upgrades
have
you "fellow digesters" found to add to the overall driving experience, without
breaking the
bank. I really do not do any track driving, and living in Maine, even if I do track
the car,
it will be rather infrequently.

I liked what BMP did with their E30, adding the M3 mirrors, and the new spoiler on the
trunk, but I would have to pay someone else some money to do those upgrades. I am also
in
the process of looking into buying new "used" M3 seats to put in the car. ANy opinions
would
be most welcomed.

TIA

Take a look at the rear subframe mounts and the differential mounts. They
are perishables that seem to start going at around our car's age/mileage in
E28 circles... (Just a thought!)

David,

I can't comment on a shop for repairing these rims or if they are worth
it... What I do wonder is, you have an E36 325is and the car you got these
off of was an E?6 328?? The reason I ask is that, to the best of my
recollection, for E36 cars, regardless of option package, only the M3 had
17" rims (not even the E36 328i w/Sport package, which I'm pretty sure were
16"). However, the E46 328i with Sport package does have 17"x8.0" rims
(don't recall the number of spokes, too lazy to go down the to garage and
check). If these are the rims you've picked up, you're going to have a
problem (or rather BIG problems) with the offset.

Just my $0.02 worth...

they're off a wrecked '99 328 (moment of silence please) =X well two are

can get a good price on tires for them? what are the stock tire dimensions
for this wheel? anyone that owns one that can read me off what the size is
on their's? any help would be great. i'm going to sport these on my '94
325is. it's a beautiful wheel ( if i can manage to get them repaired)

What would be a reasonable cost for a euro type header for an 88 M5? As
far as I know it is unused. Is it a direct fit or are there any hidden

FWIW, I had the falsing alarm module in my 1995 ti replaced last summer
under warranty. The result: no more "glass breakage" false alarms. YMMV,
but the new, improved, "green dot" does rectify the falsing problem in
some cases.

I have used the home-use tire plug kit from K Mart (about $8.00) several
times. I've never had one fail or leak. While it certainly isn't the
preferred method of repairing a tire, it has gotten me by on several
occasions.

A few years ago we were towing the race car through the mountains on a Friday
night going to Mid Ohio. At a gas stop I was doing the regular visual
inspection and noticed the left rear tire on the MPV was low. I pulled the
nail out of the center of the tread, plugged it with the kit, filled it back
up with the mini 12 volt compressor, and it never leaked again. 'Never even
took the wheel off the van. Total process, about 10 minutes.

Subject: [uuc] X5 UDE

The X5 UDE came to town, set up shop in the 3Com/Candlestick parking lot.
And it started raining half an hour before my appointment time.

Still, it was fun. The static displays included an M5 in Silverstone (it
was good to finally see one in that color, for certain reasons...) a 750iL
(my brother-in-law looked like Al Capone sitting in the backseat...well,
except he's Chinese) and a few other models.

This was my first BMW UDE and the driving side of the program was much more
structured than past ride-and-drive events I'd done. Was fun, though I'd
liked to have had a chance to try the thing with DSC turned off. I got
third-fastest time, sandwiched in amongst the autocrossers and fellow
open-track runners present. The DSC kept everyone going more or less where
they were supposed to, but was a little limiting exiting a couple bends.

The DSC demonstration proved troublesome - with five up, probably 950 lb
including the driver, it proved very difficult to get it to spin with DSC
off even on the soapy pad. He tried, and he tried, and he got the two
inside wheels off the ground at one point as it lurched off the soapy pad
sideways (THUMP! as the wheels hit the ground again - no nasty pictures of
an X5 laying on its side with its occupants crawling out the up-side
doors!) but it finally took a whole lot more soap to get it done. Lesson
learned: the CG of an X5 as it sits empty may be only 3" higher than that
of a 540i, but the seats are a lot higher and that CG undoubtedly goes up
quite a bit when the thing is fully occupied with 90th percentile adults.

The Hill Descent Control demo was entertaining - the ramp goes up and over
a semi-trailer. My brother-in-law noted that his Land Cruiser would do the
same thing - lock the diffs and throw it in low-range and let it idle down.
Spoilsport.

We got to the Komen Ultimate Drive tent just before they started closing
up; the only vehicle available was a sport-packaged X5. Turns out it rides
a whole lot like a sport-package 5-series...felt good enough, but frankly
I'd rather have the AWD package in something a whole lot more like a
regular 540i wagon.

John.
