Long ago, I had the second Ford Taurus sold. In its factory workshop
manual, they used silicone grease to lubricate the rubber bushings so
they wouldn't squeak.

I still have that tube of grease and am replacing the bushings on the
E28 M5. I know the grease won't deteriorate the bushings, but is there
any other harm to using the stuff?

TIA,

Ed

"Bill Matthews" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
"You can't legislate either morality or common sense.
Stupid laws on the books that are generally disobeyed
promote an atmosphere of no law needs to be obeyed."

Speaking of silly laws, anyone know that India had a
97% taxation rate in the 70s. Kick-started the
black-market economy, which is projected as being
equal to the white market (bit un-PC, but that is the
terminology!) economy today.

Talking of good laws, I recall once asking my Dad how
he got people to obey him at work since he had
something of a reputation for being a taskmaster.
This was before I could really understand what it was
he did. He said that he just laid down some sensible
rules and stepped aside. "Wha-uh-ot?" I said. "Well,
take the rule about driving on the left side of the
road, for example," he said, "Everyone follows that
without really thinking of breaking it and it works
quite well, does it not?" "Well, the trick is to come
up with a left side driving rule for every situation!"

If you have the time to read through this page,

<http://www.bmwlemon.com/BMW740i.htm>

I'd be interested to see what your thoughts are. Of
course, I'll understand if you don't have the time.

I'm glad I can fix a lot of the problems my cars have
myself as it seems to me that taking it to and from
the dealership itself and scheduling repairs is half
the hassle.

I'm not sure what I could have done about the various
electronic malfunctions though I suppose it would be
easy enough for the dealership to plug in alternative
modules to check out what was wrong.

If the output flange on your tranny or the front of the
driveshaft is bent (even slightly) the car will eat guibos
(flex disks). Back in High School I had a 2002 tranny roll
off my chest and hit the garage floor (I was sliding out
from under the car on a creeper). I did not see any damage
but after three guibos in under a year someone told me to
check the tranny output flange and it was slightly bent.

sonofa - I forgot, Both I and another lister had output flanges
that were loose. That would do it also I suppose.
Not to mention cause leaks. My locking tabs were not even bent
over. Makes me wonder how "critical" that special torque technique
is. Brett? This is E30 BTW. My driveshaft was also not aligned.
It had two white marks on each half so I lined those up when I
re-installed. Could be one or the other, or both, that caused
my shudder...

Real life jump in natural
speed looks dull and silly.

So there might be some thruout thinking here.

It reminded me of the end in Gone in 60 sec (new one)
A bit dull..

In reality, the car will lose control,
debre/parts will fly etc..

But it looks much better this way I guess.

Hi Mike,

There are usually ads in the back of the car magazines. In this weeks
Autoweek there are two that are somewhat close. There's precision
wheelservice.com in CT and Ye Ole Wheel Shop in MD. If you do a search on
the net for "wheel straightening" there are lots out there. I hope this
helps.

Hope all is well.

Fred

Fortunately they only banned hand held versions so we can still use our
headsets to talk to the instructors at the Glen.

Now if they would only ban reading the newspaper, putting on makeup,
shaving, and all the other stupid things they do it would make sense.

What bushings are you lubricating. Only the anti-roll bar mounts have
relative movement in the bushings. In all the others, the bushing twists
with movement but there is no sliding.

Silicone grease is great for any rubber item, bushings, brake seals,
weatherstripping, etc.

Could be.
We trhased my old Ford some years ago.

The jump was preyy cool, and we expetcted from teh scene total
devistation.
But the car hold on. The front wheels had been forcefully been moved 1
feet.

The tires where friction agaist the metal, but it was still drive'able.

Other cars just breake to easy with gearbox problems :(

BMW (in their very own way) calls the piece of split rubber that wraps
around the anti-roll bar, a bushing. That one. All the other moving
points are sealed with rubbers boots on the link.

Thanks,

Ed
