My M5 uses no oil between my 7500 mile oil changes. Perhaps after a while even it breaks down a bit, or gets diluted some with other stuff besides oil. This happened twice to me, as I approached the 9,000 mile mark, the oil was consumed at approximately 1 qt per 1,000 miles. Not really excessive, but much higher than the first 7500 miles. So now I change there. Old designs are KEWL. The classic ones because they stand out for what they are and because they are unique. I guarantee as neat as they are, you do not want one as a daily driver. I have a fully restored 30 year old car(non-BMW) with HTP(head turning power) that is fun to drive once in awhile. If it were my daily driver I'd probably buy a bicycle. Greto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] re: www.donotbuyabmw.com While this guy may be a whiner who is attacking BMW because he got one of the few bad apples that come off BMW's lines each year, he does have some points. The steering (and for that matter the clutch feel also) on my wife's '01 325i is disgusting and if I had driven the car beforehand would never have let her buy it. I called BMW customer satisfaction line and they put me on a list to retro-fit the old steering and said I would hear from them in 2-3 weeks to schedule the retro-fit with my dealer, that was 8 weeks ago at least. His point on the cheap leather in the 3-series is also valid, the leather on both of my E36 M3's was prematurely worn out within 18 months each despite the fact I drive my toys on average only 9000 miles per year. I won't even go into the rattles and cowl shake/flex that got worse by the day in my M roadster. I know quite a few people who relinquished their waiting list spot after driving the E46 M3 because they didn't like the feel compared to the E36. I don't want to turn this into a bash session, I love BMW's, especially the engines they put into the M cars, but they lost my business for a while due to issues like this. When I am ready for a larger sedan like a 5 or 7 I will definitely take a BMW over a Benz or Lexus etc, but unless they get their act together on some of these enthusiast related issues like steering and clutch feel, I will remain in the camp I defected to last year. Dean: So what is the problem with the M3 that makes it unsafe to drive? I was not able to arrive at that answer from a fairly good look at his site. I received this link in an e-mail from a friend who is going to get an E36 M3. I replied pretty much explaining each and every complaint away quite easily, including the gear change bit with the following link: <http://www.nmbe.ch/user/marc/html/getrag.html> which I have used on other occassions. As Bill Matthews pointed out, "Who cares about the CD player." After I had paid the PO of my M5, I asked him if the car had a CD player and he said, "Of course, and it sounds quite good. Want to try it out?" "No, I replied, I'm sure it is adequate." I then opened it up to take out the CDs he had in there and only used it next for my drive up to Putnam (1200 miles) after which I once again emptied it. And maybe it's just rationalization, but the ugly little pug has really grown on me. You're right to point out the distinction between style (fashion) and design. You can argue all day long about the design of the M Coupe (and there are some brilliant design elements on that car) but the style is unmistakable. It's beyond putting form behind function, it's a direct statement that "I don't care what it looks like." It's a counterculture fashion statement.
