I also believe that you shouldn't have to wear your seatbelt. Darwin has a theory you should hear about. But don't expect a free ride when you get turned into goo. I'm sick of insurance premiums going to pay for people who were seriously hurt while not wearing seatbelts. And for having airbags that deploy much more forcefully here than in othere countries because people can't be bothered with wearing seatbelts. Great, now airbags deploy more forcefully hurting me (the seatbelt user) more so that someone who should've been naturally selected can survive. Actually, I want to decide if my car should have bags at all. Nice to see all the ways guys not wearing their seatbelts positively effect the rest of our lives. Thanks for expecting the rest of us to be responsible for your stupidity. > > - Rob Levinson > Speakerphones in cars. Full-face helmet on the bike. Ben does not understand the obsession with having a spare tire (or run-flats)... There are aftermarket companies that make "Tow Bars" (that's what they call them in the U.K.): National Trailer and Towing Association, Ltd. (UK) http://www.ntta.co.uk/ Bosal http://www.bosal.com/ Brink http://www.brinkweb.com/ They even have installation guides on their site (in this case E36 Sedan/Coupe/Touring): http://www.brinkweb.com/PDF/manuals/1935.pdf This looks like it should be attaching to the rear "frame rails" and from the installation instructions, it appears as though BMW has put some divots in them to indicate the correct mounting points, I'll have to try and look for them next time I'm under the car... Witter http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/default.asp Since I'm trying to figure this all out for my '98 M3/4, I'd be interested to hear what you learn... There are 6 threaded inserts in the rear frame (Touring and sedan are the same) that appear to me to be trailer hitch mounting holes. It looks fairly easy to fabricate a receiver hitch that fits these holes. 2x2 tubing and some 1/4 inch thick brackets is all that is needed. If the BMW factory bracket is inexpensive enough, perhaps a receiver socket can be welded to it and save some fabrication. Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 14:32:54 -0600 From: Josh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] E46 M3 from the viewpoint of an owner vs weenie who won't sell his car I stopped by this website and had to quickly ingest a double dose of compazine to prevent myself from projectile vomiting. I thought that I knew what whiner was until this weenie got started. First off he clearly needs and wants pain and attention because he won't sell his M3. Second He doesn't understand in the least bit what BMW Motorsport was trying to do when creating something as awesome as the new M3. Nor does he comprehend why BMW is the success that it is today and how that success is directly related to BMW's willingness to explore and attack the high performance envelope with an eye directly focused on breaking apart the stiff, numb, and geriatric shroud encasing the definition of the modern luxury sports car. Is it any wonder that Mercedes and Lexus are following BMW's lead and not the other way around. I'll take on a couple of his complaints and try to give counterpoint that informs anyone who hasn't had a chance to spend some quality time in the new M3. - -The Motorsport differential does whine and does make strange noises during operation. And you know what, so do all race differentials. GET OVER IT! You want unbeatable traction then you will pay with the sound of performance. Same goes for the extra heavy duty drive-train and the scary sounds it makes. - -As far as body rattles all I have to say is that all race cars rattle just like any real sports car. That aside the new M3 is SIGNIFICANTLY more quiet than the previous generation despite coming with a significantly more aggressive/tight suspension. - -Exhaust rattle......Please give me a break! Here's my weenie-to-English translation of this one "I want an engine that makes over 100hp per liter naturally aspirated, happens to have an in line 6 bottom and top end that is good for well over 8K, but I don't want to hear any funny metallic sounds". May God bless the un-initiated retard nurturing and feeding this kind of blindness. Right now I am picturing an adult male with binky in his mouth, ear plugs in his ears, a bicycle helmet on his head, a nice floral print on his adult huggies, and fluffy pink slippers on his tender race driver feet, sobbing while trying to make it to work without being injured by the bad sound of his Evil BMW Motorsport motor. "BOOOO HOOO HOOOTIE HOOOOO"! By the way the exhaust rattle isn't an exhaust rattle anyway. It is what is known as "the sounds of music coming from a high performance high compression motor". When you have a motor with stainless headers, high performance pistons, solid lifters, and a compression of 11.5 to 1 you WILL hear distinct metallic sounds and you WILL hear rattle especially when the engine is warming up. Every morning I look forward to waking up driving to work and listening to the engine reach operating temperature. My E46 M3 engine rattles like a magnificent beast during warm up. After warm up all I hear are the remaining rattles of high compression like what any motor at 11.5 to 1 compression makes. Look at it this way, this weenie/whiner is just repeating history. Remember when the E36 M3 came out and many didn't like the tapping/slapping sound of their motor during and sometimes after cold start. After investigation/education the customer came to realize that the sound of their motor was related to the nature of high performance engineering and more specifically to the design of high performance pistons. The same will be realized one day regarding the distinct characteristics of the engine sounds of the new E46 M3. This guy crying about his E46 M3 exhaust sound is no different than an astronaut crying about the noisy vibrating space shuttle engines during take-off. If you can't take it don't buy or don't fly it. This guy building this whiners/weenie paradise website is doing nothing more than making an ass of himself in public. Anyway, I could go on, but I won't as I have wasted enough thought on this guys BS already. He has agreed to pay for a new transmission and is not going to hit me with a "betterment" extortion charge! He says he agreed with me that I will never own the car long enough for the transmission to go, so he isn't going to charge me for a pro rated piece of the new tranny (the "old" had 28,000 miles on it). It was almost like he had listened to me : ^ ) I am so relieved, I can actually now picture myself driving this car, rather than just selling it! Now, I just can't wait to get it back. 280 hp! 310 ft. #s of torque! 6 speeds! quiet as a mouse! handles like a, uh 3200 # car(?), Xenon headlights!, 255/40R17s in the back! beautiful Cosmos Black paint! Hey, did the sun just come out? Is life looking up? Yesssssssssssssssssss! Thanks for your nice thoughts and sympathies, your honest comments about fixing vs. replacing the tranny, etc. I feel like Billy Crystal at the end of "City Slickers" where he comes back to NY after his trip out west, refreshed and recharged, and his wife says, "You've found your smile!" OK, now one of you can buy me '97 328 and the day will be complete.
