Hi gang, I attended my first autocross this past weekend and let me just say that IT WAS A BLAST. I think I'm hooked. My 10-year-old ragtop did quite well too! Now I'm in need of a helmet. Can anyone suggest an "economical" Snell 95 or better helmet and where I can buy them? I went to www.ogracing.com but the helmets there were a little pricey. I'm in the New York City area but will be traveling to Los Angeles next week so if anyone knows of any good places in either city please let me know. Thank you in advance. I'm taking my thus-far favorite E30 M3 (64k miles, white w/ motorsport stripes (eh...), 16x8 racing dynamics, sway bars, bilsteins, conforti chip, dinan cam gear, evo air box) to Bill Arnold in San Rafael (bay area) to inspect it. It would be quite a "first" track car... but I'm excited. :) Thanks for the advice... I'm hoping a little extra checking saves me some money! For real track events, you should be using a helmet with "SA" rating - "A" for automobile. However, for auto-x, you most events let you run with a less-expensive and more readily available "M" helmet, "M" for motorcycle. With that in mind, any motorcycle shop is a good place to try on and price-compare helmets. If you are looking for good quality at a cut-rate price, the HJC brand is an excellent value. I have a Shoei (SA certification) helmet, but the price difference can be 100%-200%. The difference in quality is something you find on close inspection, but nothing to worry about. Sort of like the difference between a Honda and a Hyundai - both do the job, both do it well, they look the same, but you know one is a little better than the other. - - Rob > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 18:04:34 EDT > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [uuc] Autocross Helmet....suggestions? > > Hi gang, > > I attended my first autocross this past weekend and let me just say that IT > WAS A BLAST. Really!!!! No matter what you did to it, it would look better, damn sure cant make it worse. > I don't see how it's much worse than a Hummer. Huh?? please put the crack pipe down and step away. The Hummer has a certain Badass appeal to it because it is simply a"Badass" SUV. It wasnt built for looks but for function, but the fact it looks the part doesnt hurt. I can see kids now, making their parents drop them off 5 blocks away so that the chance someone might see them get out of an Aztec would be slim. It defines UGLY, make that FUGLY Think I would rather drive an old 320i personally if I had to choose between the two. Just make sure that the helmet has the actual Snell sticker, either on the chinstrap or under the lining on the inside. A lot of clubs will not accept the little rating decal put on the back of the helmet by the manufacturer - they want to see the real Snell certification sticker before they'll let you use that helmet at the event. If you have any doubts, ask the guy at the shop to show you the sticker on the helmet before you buy it. It was really sad when I was doing tech at an SCCA event a few months ago. One of the rookies proudly produced his brand new, shiny helmet, but we couldn't find a Snell sticker on it anywhere. Poor guy had to use one of the smelly, sweaty loaner helmets... A question you need to answer before buying an "economical" helmet: Do you have an economical head? > I went to www.ogracing.com but the helmets there were a little pricey. > That's because THEY PROTECT YOUR HEAD. Granted, your chances of injury are lower in auto-x than in, say, opentracking. But why take the chance? In the long run, the extra $100 you spent on the helmet will mean nothing to you, but the potiential brain trauma will be with you for life. > I'm in the New York City area but will be traveling to Los Angeles next week > so if anyone knows of any good places in either city please let me know. I was just in NYC last week. It's really friggin' hot and humid there. - - Mark '97 Carrera S '97 528i 5-spd '88 M3, track car, soon to be a JS racer - -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] (home) [EMAIL PROTECTED] (office) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 23:31:03 -0000 From: "Evan Arnerich" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Re: run flat tyres? ben keyes wrote: >if you look at this picture >http://www.grassrootsmotorsports.com/IMAGES/mininewside.jpg the >tire appears to be a Dunlop SP 9000 DSST run flat. >From Tirerack's website (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/du_9000dsst.htm): "Externally, the Dunlop SP Sport 9000 DSST shares the directional tread pattern and tread compound of Dunlop's "HydroMax" SP Sport 9000 tire." So it seems that it would be difficult to tell just from an image of the tread pattern whether a tire is runflat or not. Kind of reminds me of the strange whining and rattling noises us E34 M5 owners put up with. Everyone that buys one writes our list and asks about the clutch noise on take up in first gear. They just do that. They also whine and whistle a little and scream like crazy towards redline. Last night on the way home from the track I just turned the radio off so I could listen to that engine as I accelerated between trucks on Interstate 5 in the right lane to pass the **** in the right lane who was traveling 1 mph faster than the trucks. It sounded great after all those Pro 7 cars all day long. Kevin Kelly 91 M5 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I believe that there is such a law on the books or in the works. some of the forward model planning people at work have been talking about systems to do this. Our CEO committed to having systems in place by 200? on all vehicles last year in the wake of the tire events we had. currently there are simple systems that compares the rolling size of the tires between each other (using ABS sensors) to determine whether a tire is going flat & more complicated ones that have sensors in the tires that tranmit to a central module of some sort. the Mini system (& I believe also the system in the new M3's & MZ3's) uses the ABS comparison method. it was noted in one of the reviews of the Mini that the Mini system doesn't tell you _which_ tire is going down, just that one is. not sure of how it works in the BMW's. I was surprised to see such a similar system on my future mother-in-law's Pontiac, which was several years old. I believe that the Corvette was the first widely available car that had the sensor-type monitoring system, but I may be wrong. not sure whether they still have them currently or not. there are future systems in the works that have transmitters embedded in the tires to provide pressure & temperature information to the car as well. pretty neat actually. Ben does not need any more tires, ok maybe a few more.... ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #3960 *************************** ________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Camptown Automotive - http://www.camptownauto.com | Circle Tire Co.
