I want to replace all the instrument cluster bulbs once my speedometer is fixed and before I reinstall the cluster. The car is a '76 2002. The stock bulbs are 3W (and they are 25 years old). My mechanic gave me five 4W Sylvania bulbs (194's)...that's all he had....should brighten up the cluster a bit too. The 194's are available at most auto parts stores, but I wasn't sure they were the same thing. I would prefer to buy "bulk" instead of 2 in a package, as I need a dozen or so. I followed (loosely speaking) an even older post of Brett's describing the process. I compared his process to a different one I found that had at least 18 steps, not counting the beers. I really wasn't going to undo the heater controls at first, but I was having a tough time cutting away enough of the plastic to access the module. So, 4 screws later (and a beer), I had more access to the backside of the OBC than someone with more talent than me would have needed. ;-) mmmmmmm. beeeer. - -- "It is an honor to be Cookie Monster." -Sesame Street spokeswoman Audrey Shapiro ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 12:11:51 -0700 (PDT) From: Neil Deshpande <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] <E34> M5 Engine Clatter? Gruppe: I took my 1992 out for a 10-mile drive yesterday and it sounded just fine. Started it up this morning and found it clattering a lot. I let it idle for about 2-4 mins and it may or may not have gone down a bit in volume, but the character of the sound remained the same. I did not rev the engine at all. The oil level even after I had let it idle and shut it down was about 30% of the way between the low and high marks and the car was on a 2-3 degree incline during this idling and all night, just like each night with the nose up. I started it a second time for about 1 minute and it sounded the same. Also, the car does not get driven a lot so the tensioner _could_ have leaked down over time. I guess it is possible. A long screwdriver served to telescope the sound to my ear and it was not injectors. Much sharper and more metallic. Seemed to come from the valve cover, not the chain. The idle was smooth and steady and at the expected RPM. No one valve sounded too much louder than the others. All sounded noisy. I have heard them before and think one is slightly off, but they all sounded the same, except all of them were louder. The sound was exactly like when we started up the E30 M3 S14 after head gasket replacement and had forgotten to pre-pressure the chain tensioner (or that is what we surmised). In that case, Jack revved the motor and the sound was gone after a while. Presumably the tensioner pressurized enough eventually. I'd rather not do that unless it is necessary as I don't want the whipping chain to break or crack a guide or anything. Any ideas? I just managed to get the last of the rusty parts out from the E30 88 iS today and was quite pleased at the progress until this happened! Oh well, what is life w/o a few adventures! They were not produced that way. 97 528i, sure, provided it was produced before 5/96. BMW has now gone back to "plastic" impellers, however, this material appears to be twice as hard as the original, and, perhaps, will last better. - --------------------------- Now offering BMW special tool rental and pay per incident tech help. - --------------------------- Brett Anderson www.koalamotorsport.com Home of the E30 M3 CD-ROM repair manual > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [uuc] <E36> 1995 M3 Water Pump Catastrophe > > I hate to be the bearer of bad news but BMW continues to use the plastic > impeller pump. They are the same shape what is used in an E36 instrument panel. They do NOT have the color coded bases. They are just bulbs. Consists of: Bilstein Sport shocks H&R Sport springs Racing Dynamics adjustable swaybars Lower X-brace Korman camber bolt/washer kit The front struts are completely assembled, with OEM 96-on M3 top mounts, spring pads and perches. The rear shocks include new, assembled OEM rear shock mounts. Everything is ready to bolt on and will fit any E36 chassis. No additional parts or modifications are necessary for any E36 M3. For non-M3 E36 models, the only additional thing you need are front swaybar links. This suspension was used for two driving schools and approximately 3000 miles of street driving. Car is being sold, so I no longer need the suspension. Asking $1100 plus shipping from Avon, Indiana (46123). Cost for new parts was over $1400. Our 94 325 now sounds like a really old Chevy van with a bad exhaust manifold. It began innocently: I finally got around to replacing the idler pulley in the main accesory belt circuit. I guess the old pulley was creating quite a racket: with the new pulley, a previously unnoticed noise came to the fore. Either that or this noise coincidentally started when I got done with my pulley replacement: Car : '94 325, 109k miles. History of 4-5k mile oil change intervals. Source : Inlet cam area or fuel injectors, near #4 and #5. Frequency: Approx. half engine speed Type : Clicking, like a leaking exhaust manifold. Does not go up or down in intensity as engine is revved/loaded like a leaky exhaust though. All the spark plugs are torqued to 29Nm. I also removed the cam cover to check for any unusual signs of wear (like I know what 'usual wear' is..). All the cam lobes looked pretty unmolested on both the intake and exhaust. Using a wooden stick held to my ear, the fuel rail seemed to have a fairly constant high frequency clicking, but the cam cover near #4 and #5, and the VaNOS bulge had the same nasty half-engine speed clicking . I have 4k on the oil, Mobil1 15W50. What could it be? Collapsed lifter? Worse? Thanks for any input/opinions/advice.
