I swapped a 3.25:1 limited slip into my '86 while I had the rear end apart to
replace the subframe bushings over a weekend. I ran a couple of quick errands
Sunday night to make sure nothing was going to fall apart on me, and it felt
peppy. Neato. Then I went to work the next morning, which meant hopping on the
highway for my 32 mile commute. I _hated_ the lower gearing. A 528e is a nice
quiet fuel efficient commuter. I turned it into a noisy gas guzzler. Idiot! I
swapped the 2.93:1 back in it the next weekend and have had a 3.25:1 limited
slip differential sitting under my workbench waiting for me to buy a 535 with an
open diff ever since. :)

Figured it out.

The fresh air flap's motor is getting tired. It was sticking halfway
about 70% of the time.

Looks like an easy fix, thanks guys.

Now I just have to source a motor...

Is it electric or air? If air, have you checked
for leaks? Do you have the (expensive) vacuum
pump?

One of the (nylon?) gears cracked in mine, too. I plucked one from a 325 in Jim
Dowd's yard, then swapped parts to get the correct arm from the E28's motor
together with the unbusted parts from the E30's motor. Jim wouldn't take any
money for it, because he said he never sold one of those before. I had to put
$25 on a bench in his shop and run out to the door before he could give it back.

Other than the rear end gearing swap, I have no experience hotrodding my 528e.
But buying it neglected for next to nothing with 179k on the clock and driving
it ~400 miles a week for a year, I have plenty of experience keeping it running
well and fixing all the things that go wrong. :)

In addition to the people on this list, these sites have been very helpful to

Much of the info is duplicated between the sites, but I suspect that's because
it works. ;)

Yeah I think Neil has it on his site under the valve adjustment

But Ron Stygar has an excellent write-up on making your own.

I just jumper 7 & 19 on my car (20 pin diag. connctr.) with a Radio

it's now a no-brainer.

I'm sure you got your answer already but since I'm on digest mode I'll
reply anyway.<g> The M3 and the 325s have different O2 sensors, the
M3's is 3-wire and (I think) the M20 motor uses a 4-wire sensor.

Go to S-G Imports and ask for a universal Bosch 4-wire, no need to
specify Mustang this or that or a p/n.

A buddy @ work just got a new set of wheels and tires for his 3rd gen RX7 and found
that he can go wider in the rear. His 245-40/18's had 30 miles on them when he
swapped them for 275's.

Anyone interested in a VERY low milage pair of 245-40/18 T1-S tires? He told me they
mail order for low $200's new and he is willing to sell them for less. Make an offer
and I'll relay it to him.

Ed

P.S. I told him to go for 17's. The rice boy streak in him drove him to 18's. Don't
blame me. He claims he'll get 17's for R compound tires later

Thanks to Geeze and Mark I have run away from the car that I was looking at. Besides
a 24k mile odometer fraud being suspected, it had a salvage/junk title. Now, that

The "BMW lightweight wheels" are forged, not cast alloy. At around 25 lbs
each they aren't light in weight either. They are however quite strong.

These were also available in similar, but not identical design, as a pricey
($1650) option on other M3s.

This reminds me of something I wondered about. The M3 LTW got the cool
forged wheels with Motorsport (or BMW Motorsport, I forget) written
around the center. The later year M3s could be had with this style wheel
as an option, but they were different, no lettering around the center.
The question is, are these non-lettered wheels forged or are they cast
versions made to look like the LTW wheel? Also, anyone know what the
weight of these later year LTW style wheels was?

Well, the insurance company is messing with me. Seams that they don't
understand the E30 M3. They don't want to pay the $3000 to fix my car right.
New bumper cover and stuff, new exhaust, some minor painting.

When the Taxi rear ended me, my bumper cover and exhaust were hit. The
bumper cover is ripped and dented, the exhaust is bent down and misaligned.

So, I need a new cover. Does anyone have one for sale???!!!?! Brilliant Red
is preferred, but I will take anything in better shape then mine. I'm
located in Seattle, WA.

What is your wheel width? The width of the tires needs to be more or less
matched to the width of the wheels. This is a case where specific examples
from people who have done the mods would be your best source, and you might
find that differences between brand/model of tire make as much or more
difference than the tire size.

Two things. 1.) It reduces the number of people who will sue BMW because
the speedometer reads lower than actual speed and they get speeding
tickets. This is their margin for error, just in case people put on tires
that have too large an overall diameter. B.) On cars with maintenance
paid by BMW, it gets BMW out of the free maintenance period more quickly.
I would not be surprised if the error is greater on cars on which the
maintenance is provided. Of course, this is my opinion only and is not
based in fact, as far as I know.

I'll ask Larry Ayers to reply to that, he either knows the answer or knows
who knows the answer.

Isn't the LTW wheel forged? Forged is stronger, right? Is stronger
better?

As a general rule (to which I'm sure there are many exceptions), reduction
of back pressure allows freer breathing at higher RPMs, but with a possible
loss of torque at lower/mid RPMs. Didn't the stock 328i exhaust have a
flap that closed until something like 4500 RPM? That feature was included
on some models to improve mid-range torque. The only way to know for sure
how intake and exhaust changes affect power output is to spend some time on
a dynamometer while you make the changes.

I don't know enough about the rest of your questions to attempt a response.
Hell, I don't know enough about the ones I DID answer, but that didn't stop
me.
