With all due respect, Michel, that's not quite correct. I live up East of Manchester, NH and whenever I do the trek, it is always on 495/290. I just did the Mapquest thing to verify and the route from the I84 entrance to the Mass Pike, I90, then I290 through Worcester, then I495 to I93N is 9 miles SHORTER than going in to I95/128 and then up to I93. You can simply look at a map of MA to see that this is the closest to a straight line route. I avoid I95/128 like the plague, even on weekends. There is traffic almost 24/7, the road surface is lousy in a lot of places, there is an exit every mile or two and folks are just a bit more insane. I495 on the other hand, is usually less crowded, tends to flow better even when crowded, has better pavement, fewer exits and better scenery. I drive I495 at 80+ pretty much with impunity. Just keep your eyes open -- they like to hide in the median and behind bridges, etc. Ease up when you crest the hills, etc. The only drawback in this route is that you have to drive through Worcester on I290. The speed limit is 50 or 55, and supposedly enforcement is pretty strict. I always fly through there anyway and have never had any troubles. It's only about 5 miles before you're past Worcester and then you are into nice cruising territory. The ramp from I290 to I495 is pretty good, also, but you rarely get to enjoy it all alone. Oh, and on the return trip, the onramp (after getting the toll ticket) to get onto the Mass Pike West from I290 is a wonderful, tight, banked ~180 degree two laner downhill-in/uphill-out blast. If you plan ahead from the toll booths, you can usually enjoy this one, even if you have to use other cars as slalom cones -- two lanes makes all the difference. My wife hates this one! ;^/ NOTE: I just went through Worcester last weekend and they are resurfacing sections of the road, so you might encounter groovy pavement or the like... If you want to avoid Worcester, just stay on the Pike and get off at I495 -- you'll add a couple of miles and a bit more toll to your trip. With all of that said, there are some other routes that folks can take that are a bit more enjoyable to drive, although they will surely take longer. If you take I91N from Hartford, you can get off at Rt. 9 in Brattleboro, VT and head East toward Keene, NH. You have to take a left at one point to stay on Rt. 9 and then just as it's turning into a divided highway, get off to the right to stay on Rt. 9. This is a nice blast all the way to Hillsborough, NH and then through to I89, over to I93 in Concord, NH. If you are in NY near Albany, you can always go up I787 to Troy, and then take 7 East. It's a bit boring through NY, but a reasonably quick jaunt to Bennington, VT -- home of Hemmings on the right just over the VT border. As you enter Bennington, right after the speed limit drops to 30, there's a left/right complex to go through. After entering downtown, you just stay straight and end up on Rt. 9 to Brattleboro. Pick up I91N for one exit, then continue with the above route. Rt. 9 through S. VT is one of my favorite roads -- nice twisties and beautiful scenery. Just be prepared that you might get spudded -- there aren't a lot of passing zones. And do NOT use this route to tow -- there are some REALLY nasty climbs through the mountain passes. These are, however, where the passing lanes are, so they make for good blasts up some nice sweepers. Welcome to NH everyone! It's really a nice place, in spite of its approach to taxation. And don't forget to stop at the liquor stores on the Interstates -- they are run by the state and we need to money for our schools. Just don't drink and drive! And if you encounter any jerk drivers in S.NH, just remember that they are probably from Mass (like me!). We call them "Massholes"... Wave to the East as you pass through Manchester, NH. I'll be thinking of all of you! I'm going to try to ditch work one day next week to get up there... Best regards, Mike Kohlbrenner '92 535i -- with brand new (this morning!) What works really well is to stick a short push pin into the front of each tire, measure from pin-to-pin, then roll the car until the pin is in the back and measure again. No need to scribe the tire, and you don't have to worry about tread variations. Other ways to measure toe (for the original poster) are: - - Toe plates (Longacre has a set for fairly cheap, the ART laser plates are really cool, but not cheap) - - String the car (4 jackstands, or here's a pretty cool setup <http://www.audiworld.com/tech/wheel17.shtml> - look near the bottom of the article) - - Pointers on a stick - either do it yourself as Gary mentioned, or you can buy a fancy metal version at race shops. - - Optical/Laser gauges, like the Dunlop, or the ART Laser Toe Gauge. Stringing the car is a real pain in the rear, especially if you're clumsy and keep kicking the jackstands, but it's the only way to make sure that both the front and back are tracking straight and not crabbing. Not possible with Euro lamps. $400 for the setup. A bit kludgy, but not too bad and if Rob Levinson is happy with it on his M5 Touring, it is probably pretty good. (she's 4'8" and like 90lbs)...then she says theyre on an incline...facing the slope backwards...i've never seen a car push started in reverse, so i tell them to not do it, just in case...she tells me, the battery is probably too dead to jump start...so i tell them to try and jump start the car again, as i have done it MANY times to totally dead batteries...we get disconnected again, and by the time i get thru, she tells me they're on their way b/c the engine started...apparently the BF had attached the negative clamp to a bolt on the BUMPER of the X5, which didnt receive any current, as it was plastic!!! my friend also told me that he moved the negative clamp to a nut that was attached to the body and MADE THE JUMPER CABLE CLAMPS SPARK to test for voltage...it worked and they jumped their car...i told her, you NEVER test for voltage by making sparks...she replies, "oh, it's okay...he's an electrician." i was shocked...i told her, that makes it even worse, as he should know better...and that the electrical systems in newer cars can be damaged by doing stuff like that...she says "oops" and will tell her BF...so i tell her, i'll see her later and for her to enjoy her trip...oh, the X5 belonged to the BF's auntie and uncle, but they werent home...and the BF is about 27/28 years old... the things some people do...thanx fer reading if you've made it this far =) ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #4097 *************************** ________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Camptown Automotive - http://www.camptownauto.com | Circle Tire Co.
