I just wanted to thank everyone who responded to my request for info on my proposal to swap an S50 or M50 engine into my E30 325i. The information was most useful. Unfortunately, when I started my budget, the parts list alone quickly grew to more than $12K (assuming S50). It seems that besides the engine/ECU/sensors, I would pretty much need the M3 transmission, a different diff, upgraded brakes, clutch, flywheel, oil pan, possibly more suspension changes, and the list goes on . And then there's whatever labor my friend and I can't handle, like welding up an exhaust system from parts not originally intended to go into an E30. And, I'd need another vehicle to drive during the process, which would add cost since I currently don't own a spare vehicle. And including the value of my current 325i, the cost puts this into the same ballpark as, say, a used M5 which is already assembled, and which is also currently not in my budget. As much as this sounded like a ton of fun, I can't justify it from a cost standpoint, from a common sense standpoint, or from any other standpoint other than the sheer joy it would have brought me to drive the thing every day. So thanks to everyone for the input and information. It helped slap me back to reality. I have the typical oil-starved spun #4 conrod bearing & the crank is pretty trashed along with the rod. All the other rods look good, so I may be able to get away with just one. In the process, the inner valance and the front spoiler were damaged. The local body shop successfully sourced the sheet metal, but the spoiler supplied was the wrong part. I suspect that it is for the E34 M5. Anyway, my local BMW dealer says there are none in the US or Germany. Does anyone have a source? If not what aesthetically acceptable and available solutions exist to replace the spoiler? A big thanks to all respondents! I would assume that you can find one thru a good salvage dealer. the bodyshop that replaced mine didn't mention any issues with finding a new one ~18 months ago. other than stock, there are also slightly different aftermarket spoilers available, there always seem to be a few of them in the random Bav Auto catalogs that show up in my mail. In looking for a replacement for my old '84 318 that was totalled at the end of June, I've had my eye on an '88 M3 to replace it (nothing like another E30 to replace an old one!) It seems in good condition, and the owner seems to know what he's doing with it, as all the major pitfalls of the model have been taken care of (intake gaskets, oil pan baffle). It has around 90,000 miles, and he's asking around $13000 for it. Next up: My Dad found a guy at his office selling an '88 E23 735i. He says the paint is in good condition, and the interior looks immaculate. He spoke to the guy selling it, and the seller said that it's been serviced by a BMW licensed mechanic (for it's whole life? I don't know), and that he was going to have it painted, but he thought that might cause a prospective buyer to think it has been damaged (which it has not, as far as I know). All this tells me the guy knows what he's talking about, and would most possibly have all his service records since he's had it (he's a second owner). However, the car has 160,000 something miles. He's asking $5500 negotiable for it. My question is: does this seem like a wise choice? I have always wanted an M3, even while I still had my 318 (hey - what red-blooded BMW aficionado wouldn't?! :) ), but the fact that my Dad said he was reluctant to get another BMW because of repair costs, and is now telling me about this one, has me wondering if I should just hold out for the M3. (I also really want a manual tranny, as my 318 was an auto :( ) As you can see, both cars are the same model year, but the M3 has HALF as many miles. Are the E23s (<----I think that's correct apostrophe usage :P) a PITA to work on, and are they reliable? How fuel efficient are they? I'm obviously assuming a huge 3.5L 6 would guzzle more gas and have worse mileage than the powerful but small 2.3L 4 in the M3, but what do you guys think about one over the other?
