I can't say that I know Said or Stuck on a very personal level, but I have
had the opportunity to speak with both of them and I thought they were
pretty dang nice.
I talked to Stuck for a few before the Petit Le Mans last year. He seemed
pretty down to earth to me. The thing I remember most since it was the
first time I had ever seen him in person is how friggin tall he is. =)
At this years Rolex 24 I talked to Said in the Pit after one of his stints
in the Jet Motorsports BMW and he was pretty cool. I just walked up to him
and said, "Man...what's it like having that v8 in the M3 now?" and we gabbed
for a few mins.

As for Said's flippant remarks about the P-cars etc. He seems like the
smartass type to me, and since there is a healthy rivalry between the two,
he is just feeding people what they want to hear. Heck even Tom Milner
takes his shots at Porsche. In the Feb. 2001 issue of Bimmer, talking about
the difficulty of the 2000 season, "Those 'Volkswagens with lock washers'as
Milner refers to Porsches, are going to have some serious competition next
year!"

It's just good natured ribbing in the spirit of competition.

Are you sure that 735i is an E23? 1988 is the first year of the E32, a
completely different creature than the previous E23.

Clarifying that would definitely change the sort of answers you might get.

I couldn't have said what he said about what Said said any better even

that, he should have said "Said's schtick", not "Saids stick"... not to
be confused with Stuck's schtick, although I have said that what Said

I've heard stories of gravity bleeding.. but I don't have the patience
for that. Apparently everyone who has ever power-bled an ABS system
has ruined it (not!) according to the latest news for independent
mechanics (at least mine.. who refuses to build a power bleeder..
but I digress.. :-)

If there is a problem with bleeding ASC+T cars, I haven't experienced
it - I happily flushed (not a dry-bleed) my '98 528i with DSC (which
is ASC+T with a new name I think) without a problem. Brakes working
fine. I did a complete fill and dry-bleed to the ABS system I added
to my '85 BMW - motorcycle.. works fine.

I do not put 50PSI on the system.. more likely about 10PSI.. which
is WAY less than the master cylinder itself will put out.. it
gives adequate flow - not FAST, but adequate..

Yes. I tried them for the rears only on my '87 325iS K-stock club race car.
I didn't get the fronts as I am very happy with my PF90s on the front. They
are a bit softer than I would have liked and wear ok, but not as good as the
Pagid blues. They also take a while to bed in (i.e., first session I had a
mushy pedal)

> Has anyone tried these or know where to buy them?

You can get them from Eurasian in Temecula, CA. 800-824-8814. Dave can get
you the Mintex or Pagids. So far I liked the Pagid blues better than the
Mintex 1144 for a rear pad.

Mintex also makes an 1166 endurance formula pad for our cars. I'm trying
those on the rear for the 3 hour enduro that I'm running this weekend in LV.
Yes, it is a night enduro!

Subject: RE: [uuc] E30 M3 vs E23 735i

I had an e23 for a few years, until someone creamed it. The main thing with
the e23 is the chassis is loose - just not stiff enough to live up to the
driving expectations of most of us bimwads. The gas mileage is 17-19 in
town (automatic) and in the low 20s on the freeway.

Working on the car isn't TOO bad - but there's gobs of vacuum lines and
wires to follow.

For that car as you describe it, $5500 is probably high. I paid $4500 for
mine 5 years ago, although it was an '85. Also, if you are looking at an
e23, it ain't an 88. 87 was the last year for the e23. The 88 was the
e32 - a much more driveable car IMHO - but I never owned one.

If I were in your shoes - I think I'd favor the M3. a LOT more fun, unless
you really need the room. My daughters loved the 7. Reading lights, lots
of room, rear vents (although they aren't worth much) and the sunshade to
keep them cool.

For me a 3 is not an option. I'm considering 7s again as my 11 year old is
almost 5'7" and growing fast. Rear leg room will be an issue soon.

Happy hunting.

Subject: [uuc] E30 M3 vs E23 735i

I know, I know, there's nothing really to compare here, as the two vehicles
are drastically different in almost all respects, but....

In looking for a replacement for my old '84 318 that was totalled at the end
of June, I've had my eye on an '88 M3 to replace it (nothing like another
E30
to replace an old one!) It seems in good condition, and the owner seems to
know what he's doing with it, as all the major pitfalls of the model have
been taken care of (intake gaskets, oil pan baffle). It has around 90,000
miles, and he's asking around $13000 for it.

Next up:
My Dad found a guy at his office selling an '88 E23 735i. He says the paint
is in good condition, and the interior looks immaculate. He spoke to the
guy
selling it, and the seller said that it's been serviced by a BMW licensed
mechanic (for it's whole life? I don't know), and that he was going to have
it painted, but he thought that might cause a prospective buyer to think it
has been damaged (which it has not, as far as I know). All this tells me
the
guy knows what he's talking about, and would most possibly have all his
service records since he's had it (he's a second owner). However, the car
has 160,000 something miles. He's asking $5500 negotiable for it.

My question is: does this seem like a wise choice? I have always wanted an
M3, even while I still had my 318 (hey - what red-blooded BMW aficionado
wouldn't?! :) ), but the fact that my Dad said he was reluctant to get
another BMW because of repair costs, and is now telling me about this one,
has me wondering if I should just hold out for the M3. (I also really want
a
manual tranny, as my 318 was an auto :( ) As you can see, both cars are the
same model year, but the M3 has HALF as many miles. Are the E23s (<----I
think that's correct apostrophe usage :P) a PITA to work on, and are they
reliable? How fuel efficient are they? I'm obviously assuming a huge 3.5L
6
would guzzle more gas and have worse mileage than the powerful but small
2.3L
4 in the M3, but what do you guys think about one over the other?

TIA for any replies.

Subject: [uuc] <E28> Cracked Front Spoiler: Options!

Joe:

There are a couple of options:

1. Try looking for the E28 535iS spoiler. Same part,
but it might not be NLA. Who knows!

2. Go to the E28 non-M spoiler. Stealth and cheap.

3. Switch to the Euro setup with either the big
plastic airdam, rocker covers and rear skirt or just
the small chrome bumpers. IIRC, Mr. Alex Caggan (sp?)
had advertised that he knew how to get these Euro
parts for 'good' prices. Find his establishment at:
<http://members.rennlist.com/autoconsortium/>
Note that those who have done this conversion record
that it is not plug and play for the front at least.
I know Ed McVaugh did this on his E28 M5 and has
pictures of it. I think he is [EMAIL PROTECTED], but
that could be wrong. Another link is:
<http://www.m535i.org/officers/ra/article.html#bodywork>

I would go for the Euro conversion myself if insurance
is picking up at least part of the cost. I did the
later bumper upgrades to my E30s and I'm very happy
with the updated look. See WWW page for details. Let
us know what you do!

I smacked a recently shed, 15-25 seconds earlier,
truck tire remnant on the Pa Turnpike about a month
ago. In the process, the inner valance and the front
spoiler were damaged. The local body shop
successfully sourced the sheet metal, but the spoiler
supplied was the wrong part. I suspect that it is for
the E34 M5. Anyway, my local BMW dealer says there
are none in the US or Germany. Does anyone have a
source? If not what aesthetically acceptable and
available solutions exist to replace the spoiler?

A big thanks to all respondents!
