I thought the E-Code lights were H1 (low beam) and H4 (high beam) bulbs.I
have heard they are also direct fir ,plug-n-play for the old sealed beams.

I've been watching it since pre-finals. Very exciting Tuesday night!

They lost tonight though: 4-1 favoring the Swiss.

sorry for the late reply, damn computer crashed on me...

family members report that this happened decades ago: one day when my mom
got dropped off to work, my 2 aunties decided to wash her car for
her...unfortunately, they used green scouring pads and brillo pads...they
even got down to bare metal in some places...needless to say, my mom was
upset when she got home =)

E code sealed beam replacement lights use the twin filament H4 bulb for the
outer lights with high and low filaments. These are plug and play for
sealed beams.

For ellipsoids, there is no plug and play replacement.

That's interesting. My original silver model certainly has reinforcing
gussets under the lift arm as Skip describes. I've seen the blue model at
the HF store here, but didn't think to look underneath.

The new 4000 lb model is apparently blue, but recent sightings of the 3000
lb version also show it as blue. The original 3000 was silver, may also
still be available?

I've heard but not seen specifics of two HF failures.

One broke off an overhanging segment of the saddle, apparently because the
contact point wasn't positioned centrally when jacking. This might not
matter much with a steel part, but care needs to be taken with aluminum.

James Clay at Bimmerworld previously reported breaking an HF side plate
while jacking an "angled load." In my experience with lifting cars at the
track it's not hard for a jack to tilt if the ground isn't flat and level.
Maybe that's what happened here?

I've previously pointed out that the HF jack uses aluminum castings for the
main load-bearing parts: side plates and lift arm. This isn't as strong a
construction as the machined and assembled aluminum plate found in the high
end ($600+) racing jacks.

So, no surprise here, you get what you pay for.

I've been very satisfied with my HF jack, but I'll continue to be careful in
how I use it at the track. (At home I have a pair of behemoth "survive a
direct hit from a nuke" Lincolns that can be abused all you want.)

I'm in the process of installing an "i" engine into an
'86 325e. As I understand, there are a couple of
wires that need to be spliced in order to get the
tach & fuel gauge to work and I was wondering if
anybody here would know which ones are these.

Any other things aside from these wires that I
need to be aware of during the transplant?

TIA,

Luis

Subject: [uuc] <98 740iL> tilt and slide steering mechanism and vavle cover bubbling

Hello. I just bought a 98 740iL and the steering wheel electric tilt and
slide mechanism is not functioning by the switch on the column. I hit the
seat memory button and the wheel did start to move, which points to an
electrical problem and not a motor malfunction. The fuses are all fine under
the hood. Is there a relay somewhere for this dude?

Another strange thing I noticed...on the valve covers. The front part (the
part painted in silver paint, the rest is covered with plastic) is
completely BUBBLED. It is as if the engine was so overheated that this paint
started boiling. I have all the records and checked with the local dealer
who serviced the car and they said it was never overheated. While that is
all find and good, it could have been overheated at some point....is this a
normal thing associated with faulty engine paint from the factory, or,
should I be REAL concerned? The engine runs perfectly.

These are the only issues with it...well, except for the 3 quarts of water
in the spare tire well :-) I think she needs a tailight gasket.

The steering column problem is software related. Could possibly need one of
the motors replaced also. There was a service bulletin on this complaint, not
sure of the number right now.

Bubbled paint is from bad paint, not overheat. They all do it.

Subject: [uuc] Re: Where to find info....

Lee, I have a file at home with more info, but in general (this will go as
far as my memory allows):

The E30 325is was available in the U.S. from 1987 through 1990. In 1991
BMW dropped the "is" designation, but offered a sport package on both the
325i 2 door and 4 door - with the same equipment, AFAIK. All had limited
slip, deck lid spoiler out back, BBS 14x6.5 inch basketweave wheels, sport
seats, leather interior, leather covered shift knob, premium sound,
electric sunroof, full on board computer, and stiffer springs (no
significant difference in ride height that I could tell). I am not sure
whether the front sway bar was different than the 325i.

1987: aluminum bumpers; one piece front air dam similar to the 325es, but
with additional openings at lower center for the oil cooler; Bilstein
shocks/struts that look like HDs, but are apparently specially valved for
BMW (was also used on the 325es); three spoke sport steering wheel with M
stripes at the bottom of the center spoke; rear side swing-open windows;
rear sway bar 2 mm thicker than 325i (14 vs 12 or 14.5 vs 12.5, I forget
which).

1988: Same except switched from air dam to new front lower valence, 2
piece - the upper part is shared with the 325i, but the lower part is
unique to the "is", deeper than the 325i, contoured, and body color;
elipsoid low beam headlights; Boge shocks and struts; 12/12.5 mm rear sway
bar. Aluminum bumpers continued.

1989: First year of the plastic covered, body color bumpers; not sure if
the rear side windows still opened; otherwise the same as an '88.

1990: First year of airbag steering wheels (4 spokes, not at all
sporting); no more elipsoids, back to sealed beam headlights used through
'87; rear side windows do not open.

1991: Same as '90, AFAIK, but you had to order the "sport package" option
for you 325i. Rear side windows open if you have a 4 door.

The Yahoo E30 Group guys can fill in the details I've forgotten.

What is the stock tire size on the 91 850?

Also, does anyone have suggestions on tire/wheel upgrades for this car? I
was thinking something 18 inch...however, my client wants to go 19
inch....is that stupid?
