I wanted to get an HID upgrade for my tow vehicle/commuter a (2002 Chebby
Avalanche) but was turned on to the Slyvania Silver Star bulbs. WOW! About
80% of the benefit of the HID for 5% of the cost. Highly recommended. Plus
you get a little matchbox NASCAR in the box.

Boy, I would love you being driving behind me in either of my cars with you
in your HID equipped F150. Those trucks already light up my life and the
inside of my car. I bet you could read my car manual if it was sitting on
my dash.

Agreed.

What Mark says is entirely correct. E36 M3 cars were split for the 1995
model year with some getting the early units and some the later.

If the stock radio has a small display, you have an early (non I-bus)
unit. If you have the later radio, it will have a wide display, centered
on the face of the unit.

The cables are different and are not interchangeable.

In response to the original question (a 1996 later car), if you wish to
stay with BMW, go with the M-coupe CD player unit (Blaupunkt made, CD43
model), and skip the trunk mounted unit. Don't be lured into the
Nakamichi glove box unit, either. When they fail, your CDs go to the
repair center with it.

Funny Fix-A-Flat Story. My wife and I went to Chile a few years back and
went to the southern tip to do some site seeing and hiking. I had reserved
a 4wd rental from the local Hertz establishment before we left. We arrive
in the small town in Chile and stop by the Hertz office. It pretty much
consisted of a desk and a chair (crate actually). They never heard about
our reservation (of course). So after some bitching and moaning they find a
Daihatsu (sp?) Rocky diesel. Basically very similar to a Suzuki Samurai.
Pretty well beat up, including the missing fuel tank cap that was replaced
with a red rag. Looked like a Molotov cocktail on tires. Bald tires. VERY
bald tires. Plus the spare had a lock on it which had a missing key. So my
wife and I shrug our shoulders and take the vehicle and proceed on our
adventure. First stop is to go buy some fix a flat. We spend some time
with our Spanish phrase book trying to translate fix a flat into Spanish.
Everyone we ask looks at us like we're from Mars. After a few tries at
various stores I finally mutter something to my wife about how hard can it
be to buy some fix a flat in English. The counter guy brightens up and says
"Ah Fix a Flat!" And proceeds to bring us a case of it. Grrrrr

Amazingly I don't need any of it until we're about 60kms from returning the
trusty Rocky about 8 days later and a few 1000kms. Then the front right
tire goes flat. Yippee! We get to use the fix a flat. I jump out "repair"
the tire and we're off. 5kms later the left rear is flat. That's ok cuz I
have 11 more cans. Another quick repair and we're off. A few klicks later
and front right is flat again. Rut-roh reorge. I look at the front right
and the surface is kind of white and sticky to the touch (gravel and dirt
stuck to it). Fender well is covered in white stuff (latex). The tire is
so bald that the fix a flat is literally oozing out of the tire. Yikes! So
this time I put in two cans and one more in the rear. We're off, and this
time at top speed since now I'm getting worried that the 7 cans aren't going
to be enough to get us back. To make a long story short we ended up
dropping off the Rocky on 3 flats and zero cans of fix a flat ;-)

John,

I have a better idea. Skip the donut spare idea all together. Yeah,
instead, I have a new soon-to-be-patented system that is much lighter than
full size spares or even donut spares. Please read on...

I combine a can of "Fix-uh-Flat", a little tire compressor (when you need
more air than the "Fix-uh-Flat" provides), and a one-year membership to AAA
for only $249. Ahhh, I can just see the money pouring in now. I bet in no
time all the manufacturers will be clamoring for me to work out major
purchasing deals for them.

If anyone else that is interested, please give me a call at 555-FIX-FLAT. I
can help all of you with your New Years resolution to remove weight.

Regards,

Rich - told my wife I was going to lose some weight this year....she didn't
realize I was talking about the M3 :-)

Don't laugh; this is what BMW did for the Z3 and Z coupes, minus the
little compressor. Fix-a-Flat and a card with Roadside Assistance's
phone number on it.

Hmm, sounds very familiar. I believe I heard this weekend on "Monster Garage" that 27
clowns could fit into a car, 54 if the were put through a wood chipper. The makeover
this week...converting a PT Cruiser into a wood chipper. I love that show. Jesse
James is the man. After watching his specials on TV and a few others (Discovery), I
really want to build a custom motorcycle some day.

Previously, we had nominated Brett Anderson to go on Junkyard Wars. I really see him
as more of a Monster Garage kind of guy but that 7 day deadline would be an issue for
him.

:-)

Later,

Rich - haven't missed a "Monster Garage" episode yet...my wife hates it.

So if I want to try to dampen a 2002 convertible,
should I try to get a e30 damping assembly, and
probably I would need to try different weights?????

To all,

The system of weights, etc. in the E30 battery box (in the trunk) to remove
harmonic shake is not unique to BMW. One of my friends from high school 20+
years ago had a 68 or 69 Pontiac Firebird convertible which had "cocktail
shakers" inside each corner of the trunk (and possibly under the hood, can't
recall after all these years) to reduce harmonic shake. They had some sort
of fluid & a weight inside.

I seem to have read of other builders, European & other, who have used the
BMW or Pontaic method to do this. Harmonics happen, that's why you put
dampers, weights, etc. in the right places.

Many E30's (325i for sure) have a harmonic damper on the guibo to reduce
driveline shake.

Before doing any of these.. I'd see if someone local has the
same head-unit and see if they'd let you do a swap test.

I believe (without opening the TIS I can't say for certain) that
the '96 model would have an antenna amplifier - one that has
gone kaput could cause loss of FM.. it's usually located back
near the rear window (in the C pillar)

This discussion reminds me of the race car (type escapes me right now) that had
the movable weight that could be shifted to maintain balance.
This leads to memories of staying in buildings in Japan where massive
counterweights were placed on an upper floor to counter swaying (from
earthquakes or typhoons).

I thought that the non-M Z3 coupes & roadsters actually had mini-spares in them,
but the dual exhaust of the M cars eliminated the space the spare needed.

the Z4 comes standard with runflats, so no fix-a-flat goop compressor like I got
in the M coupe. the compressor is actually quite useful when used without the
goop cylinder in the system - easier than treking to the airhose at tracks w/o
air. handy for auto-x as well I guess, but I'm not much of an auto-x'er.

your M3C has the new smaller ///Mobility system compressor/goop thing somewhere
in all that plastic/foam stuff under the trunk carpet.

Gern1 Camaro and Firebird convertibles have one 25 lb damper weight in each
corner, 4 in all.
