I'd like to thank everyone for helping me last week decide on a radar
detector. I took Dennis Wynne up on his offer (thanks Dennis!), and I'm
glad I did, too. This thing ROCKS! I'm a convert now. I used it for
400+ miles last weekend, but didn't hear much. Then last night driving
around town, the V1 paid for itself by spotting a police radar unit
blaring K toward me. He was moving toward me, and I had about 3/4 mile,
over a hill, warning. Wow. The counter/arrows are definitely worth the
premium as well.

Are there any tricks to getting the suction cups to stick well? I
eventually had to give up and use the visor clip.

Next up, hardwire install.

Put a little bit of moisture on the cup. High-quality de-ionized and
buffered water from Black Forest artesian springs is recommended in the Z8
owner's manual.

Barring local availability, you lick your finger and swipe the cup.

Congrats on your V1!

I can get you the part number from mine if you want - it's cast into
the metal along with the BMW logo. Made me smile. This solid chunk
of iron needs to have the propeller logo on it. Though I can't
imagine anyone would buy one of these new - there's gotta be a few in
the scrapyards for cheap.

It's also got a threaded hole in the top, presumably for a handle to
make it easier to install/remove. You could bolt additional weight to
it if you wanted!

Hmm, if this was ODB-II, I would imagine the check engine light was on the entire
1,000 kms with that missing fuel cap. Wow, talk about annoying....

I have also found that they suction cups don't stick as well to the
windshield when cold. Hitting the windshield with a blast from the
defroster seems to help.

Lick them. Yeah I know, yuck.

I guess regular water would work well too...

Here in Chicago, you can lick the suction cups and watch the moisture
freeze as you push them in contact w/ the window. Solid water doesn't
seal nearly as well. I'm considering moving south to get them to work
better. --SC

ps -if you can't move south, a very thin layer of vacuum grease will
work cold. Just don't lick it next time.

This is a really cool idea, but I have to wonder... how many credit card

his key fob?

Awww pipe down. ; -)

I never lick the suction cup; just lick your finger
(at least you know where it's been) and then rub the
saliva around the suction cup.

Subject: [uuc] Anyone have tapes of Speed World Challenge Touring?

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had tapes, DVDs, or VCDs of any or all
of the SPEED World Challenge Touring series for 2002. If so, please
let me know ASAP. I basically need them by Wednesday (tomorrow). Of
course, this means that I would either need to have them overnighted
or pick them up locally in the Northern VA area. I realize this is a
strange request, but I just need some footage of the BMWs in touring.
I have the "Year in Review", but no individual races.

I have a Paypal account if anyone has these and is willing to
overnight them to my place. I will even return the tapes/CDs/DVDs if
necessary.

Thanks
JamesM

Good deal! Once folks use one, it spoils you for ANY other detector.

The other morning driving to work the V1 goes off, I come over the hill and
the cops have left one of those RADAR signs on the side of the road.

"The speed limit is 30 mph, you are going __ mph" and it flashes if you speed.

As I was nearing the sign the counter went to 2, as I passed the sign the
arrows showed side the rear AND front... MMMMM On down the hill sits a
real cop with a RADAR gun shooting people after they went past the sign
"in case" some of them sped back up.

Any other detector = "beep", V1 = no ticket for me :-)

Did you try a couple of the NEW suction cups? Remember the V1 and the window
mount were USED - but all the other things are new. A couple of the never
used cups may hold better. They have 2 sizes as spares, try the larger.
Also, clean the inside of the window with some alcohol and try the suction
cups again. As someone else mentioned cold glass and the suction cups can come
loose, but usually once I have them on there good they do not come off. If I
take the mount off then put it back one or both cups will come off a time or
two (usually over night when it is cold) and I keep re-sticking them. After a
few days they stop coming loose. You can also wet the cups a little as
others have suggested, but I usually don't have to do that.

Enjoy your new toy!

Has anyone bought one of the many 'we make car go fasta ' (Saturday
Night Special??) strutbars seen on Ebay ? Looking at the
'representative' pics one sees a variety of shapes and end fittings that
have dubious structural value other than cluttering up the engine bay .
BUT ,considering the many hundreds of $$ that the AC Schnitzer
swaged-end aluminum E36M3 unit I have cost the original owner, I wonder
if it would be practicable to get one of these Ebay specials (they
usually seem to have threaded adjusters/fittings ) and have some decent
endfittings made ?? The pics show what appear to be fairly stout bars in
those things ,but very flimsy ends.
Anyone BTDT ??

Or, more likely, waiting to catch those like me, who use those signs to see
how fast I can accelerate past them.....

I think Kathy and I have about 6 suction cup mounts between us (for 2 V1s).
Every car has it's own window mount, plus a spare for travelling. Valentine
will gladly sell you extra mounts, although ours were accumulated from various
upgrades, as each upgraded unit comes with a new bracket. Once they're stuck,
they stay stuck, because we never remove them, until the car leaves our stable
at least...
