Clark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] re: M3 steering wheel I have noticed that several North American spec E34 M5 (pre- 9/92 production) owners are retrofitting the M- Technic wheel that appeared in North American E36 M3 models through 3/98 production. This essentially adds the M tri- color stitching that was added to North American 1993 model year examples, this change was introduced at the start of the 1993 production in 9/92. However, while it is a nice addition its seems that is more worthwhile to purchase the entire steering wheel and air bag unit as it same unit that appeared in late production 3.8 litre E34 M5s. This later production air bag is a better designed cosmetic addition. The wheel itself differs from that of the Sport steering wheel that is found in the (Non M) E34 5 series and is a very worthwhile addition to either car. The air bag unit from the E34 5 series is not interchangeable with the more contemporary three spoke M- Technic wheel, which is not time correct for the E34 5 Series. New air bag units from most BMW Centers retail for well over $622.50 and are seldom shipped from dealers like Hendrick, Circle or Pacific BMW. Finally it should be noted that if you are seeking a three spoke M- Techinc wheel you should be cautioned that late model BMWs (i.e. E36/7-/8 series) used a similar wheel however it used a dual stage airbag that is not compatible with BMWs that received only the single stage air bag. The M technic three and four spoke wheels are nearly identical in overall diameter and there is little reason to purse the three spoke M technic wheel. For a photograph of the wheel (shown in an E34 M5) see: http://www.bmwmregistry.com/faq/E34_M5_LE_Green_Interior.jpg If you are interested in purchasing this entire unit I have a wheel and air bag that would I potentially offer for sale. This wheel is most time correct wheel for the E34 5 series and is a fine addition to your car. Please respond via email if interested. The wheels were purchased new from Tire Rack in Sept '02. They are mounted with 225/45/15 Hoosier R3S03's (DOT road race). Size is 15x8, 5x120 bolt pattern (used on my E30 M3, also fits E34 5 and E24 6 series I believe...better double check though), ET22 offset. This set up retails for over $1350 new before shipping! The wheels were used for ONE race weekend at Mid Ohio...I think for a total of 1 30min practice, 1 30min sprint race, and 1 hour long enduro race - 2 hours for cryin' out loud! No incidents, wheels never left the track. They're in excellent shape as you can imagine with such limited use. The tires are still competitive, I would defiantely use them for another race weekend. They have lots of tread and would be great for a lot more school/lapping day use. Oh, I'm selling them because I'm moving to prepared class racing and will be using a big brake kit along with 17" wheels. Asking $950/set plus shipping from 48170. Email with questions please! Thanks. I miss her dearly but it had to be done. I am now in the market for a 5 series. I have owned an E28 in the past and could not have been happier. I was originally thinking an E28 535is would be nice. During my search I have seen a few nice E34 535i(s) for sale in my price range. Can anybody point me to any sites that document the things to look out for on these cars as well as trim levels, sports packages etc? Has anybody owned them both who can give me a idea of the major differences besides obvious appearance, for example driving characteristics, handling, etc. Thanks in advance for the help. Does anyone tow with their X5? Or their 540 wagon? Does anyone know what the tow rating is for the 540? I think that BMW NA does not publish any tow ratings for the 540 in the US, but I would think they must in Europe, because when I've driven on the continent, I've seen every make of BMW from Z3 on up towing things -- even a 520(ish) wagon towing a giant camper for vacations. I'm looking to buy a new mommy-vehicle for the wife. Would love to be able to use it as a tow vehicle; 1800-2000 lbs. enclosed trailer, 3000lbs. car. So an X5 with a 6000lbs. rating is probably on the marginal side, but it would only be a half-dozen times a year, if that. I know that something like a Suburban would be ideal, but I do NOT enjoy driving big trucks on a daily basis -- hence the interest in an X5. But I also know that a 540 wagon actually has more room than an X5, and aside from lacking AWD, is more fun to drive. So, any and all suggestions welcome! And any links to websites with more info on X5s (and 540 tourings) would be most appreciated. thx, - --Dennis . ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 2003 07:12:36 -0800 From: "JS Nord" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Advice on 5 series try www.bmwe34.net and the folks at www.bimmer.info in the E34 section. I'm trying desperately to figure out what the hell is wrong with this thing and have some questions. Last year in June when I left for Thailand, the car vibrated quite a lot under full throttle accel in 1st & 2nd gear. In October, Tim Ng took the car while I was gone and had the driveshaft replaced with one of the ones from Portland. I returned in November, and the car was OK, for a little while anyway. Then I developed this thing where the driveline would hammer several quick times from 4-5k rpm in 1st gear under full throttle only. I took it back & they replaced the center support. Same thing. Took it back again & they replaced the center support again using the factory part #. Now the car vibrates a LOT all the way through 1st & 2nd gear at full throttle. In this time, I also replaced the tranny mounts, upgrading to the 535/635 units. This is when I found that the tranny is crooked. The right mount is being compressed while the left is being stretched. However, finally, the front sway bar doesn't touch the bell housing, but it does touch the angled bolt at the back of the oil pan?!?!?! I've had the splash shields out while installing the Bimmerworld duct kit (I'm too lazy to pull the bumber cover--which I found you really don't need to do). I've tried to inspect the motor mounts & the subframe. In all cases, they look ok. The subframe was repaired & the Turner re-inforcements were installed as well as new motor mounts about 1-1/2 years/5000 miles ago. Looking from the bottom, the subframe seems to be ok, as do the motor mounts, although I have no idea which mounts they are. The lower pan doesn't sit totally parallel to the ground, but I don't know if this is normal. Also, with the car on jackstands (with the stands under the rear axle carrier) the driveshaft will touch the gas tank. I don't know if this stand placement pushes the axle carrier up allowing this to happen, as it doesn't appear if this happens always. It basically left a dirt mark all the way around. I'll drive it today to see if there's contact when the car is on it's wheels, although I don't think there should ever be any contact. I had noticed a that the old DS had this problem too, but only after the new suspension was put in. This brings me to another point, although I can't prove it, I believe the root cause of all this came from this suspension work. This was the situation where the rear shocks popped out after only 100 miles, the center bearing was installed crooked, the inner ball joints were loose, the diff was not torqued to the axle carrier & the DS to diff flange bolts were only finger tight, among other things, like the right front Eibach spring being put in upside down......All of this together kind of leads me to believe this work was done kind of carelessly and that something may not have gone back together just right, like the rear axle carrier mounts or the gas tank not being re-installed correctly. At this point I'm at a total loss and quite frustrated. I've considered shimming down the diff, but don't really think this is the proper solution. I could guess that maybe the motor mounts are the 740 units, but I really doubt it, as this would require shimming the tranny down, which would place it against the sway bar again. I've also considered replacing the motor and rear axle-carrier mounts, but they are so new. At this point I would be very greatful and willing to try any suggestions anyone might have. To anyone who thinks I should pack some marshmellows & a six pack & drive it around until it becomes a campfire, sorry, I already thought of that..... Thanks a lot in advance, Lee 88 M3->VERY frustrated right now 01 Saab 9-3SE->may be new driver's school car, too bad the race tires won't fit it ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #6109 *************************** | | In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. |________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | | Autoscope-Motorsports - http://www.autoscope-motorsports.com | |==================================================== | | Koala MotorSport .
