Of course, if you have a trunklid mounted spoiler, the strut is a
different number, but regardless, the number is E34 specific and is not
interchanged with an y other BMW model.

No joke?  Look closer. The left tail lights cross over the trunk cut line;
the rights don't. I'd believe that kind of mistake in PhotoShop, but not in
a body shop.

Group, I shared the call for contestants for Junkyard Wars with some
friends, and one of them came back with this:

"One of the production coordinators for that show is my wife's cousin,
Diana Hunter."

So now that we have a connection, just how badly do we want Brett on the
show? Seems like we could ask my friend's wife to pull a few strings with
her cousin, no?

Key-ryst, Evan, haven't you heard of problems with fiberglass changing shape
when it cures? Cadillac Converters does okay but not great work. Whaddya
want for $6K including paint?

This thing is genuine. I've driven it around with one arm out the window
and the other wrist through the steering wheel. It did break down on me, so
I pressed the OnStar button and got help right away.

Has anyone tried this brake fluid?

http://www.valvoline.com/pages/products/product_detail.asp?product=51

Valvoline claims a dry boiling point of 500 deg F, which is only 39 deg F
less than ATE SuperBlue. And apparently the Valvoline is easier to find
locally. My friendly local BMW parts supplier sold out of ATE SuperBlue
right before I got there Saturday. A friend of mine got the last liter.
I'll deal with him later. After I'm done borrowing his tools.

I've used it for several years. Seems fine. No problems, no boiling.
Sample size of 1 yadda yadda.

Subject: [uuc] E36M3 Instrument Cluster Troubleshooting

Hi all,

I am having a problem with my instrument panel on my 95 M3 that I would
like your advice on. The symptoms are fairly random in frequency but
repetitive in nature: The tachometer and coolant temp gauges don't
work. Sometimes they begin working after a short period of driving,
other times not. Sometimes, I'll start the car and they don't work so
I'll shut it down and start it again and then they'll work, other times
not. I have run the instrument cluster self-test and all of the gauges
sweep through their entire range of operation.

This past weekend, I removed the cluster, disassembled it, cleaned all
of the contacts and leads with Stabilant 22 and re-assembled,
re-installed it all for nothing. The syptoms are exactly the same, no
tach or coolant temp.

I am thinking that there are three possible causes:
1. Defective instrument cluster main circuit board or connector.
2. Flaky cables or connectors between sensors and cluster
3. Flaky sensors

Anyone BTDT on this problem? What worked what didn't? Anyone know of a
source that can diagnose/repair faulty instument clusters?

BTW, thanks to all who contributed to the Drei Bond thread, I ended up
going with some High Tack gasket sealant from Autozone (-65 to 500
degrees F, non-drying and Oil/gasoline repellent). One of the easier
jobs that I have tackled on this car.

Many regards

Jamie,

I'm not an expert but I think you can probably rule out your #2 and #3 if
the car is otherwise running well. Just about every piece of info you see
on the instrument cluster is fed to it from the car computer. You don't see
any direct sensor outputs. Sensor outputs go to the computer, computer
feeds to instrument cluster. For instance, the straight up position you see
on the coolant temp gauge isn't one particular temperature, it's a rather
large range of temperatures considered by the computer to be "normal". I
would pull the DME and clean the connectors on the DME and the connector to
the wiring harness. If that doesn't work see if you can borrow someone's
DME (good luck) to see if the problem goes away. If someone is nice enough
to loan you their DMW they may also loan you their instrument cluster for
testing ;-). If the swaps don't work I suspect you have a problem in the
wiring harness to the instrument cluster or in the cluster.

If you want to see a real neat show on your instrument cluster, just bathe
the DME in water, the needles do a very interesting dance when the DME is
wet ;-) Don't ask me how I know.....

good luck

Marco

David,

Check out :

http://www.myroadster.net/

under the LED... flag.

It appears that you may have to add resistance to fool the light check.
Otherwise if they're bright enough LED's are a good choice. Also, you might want
to hunt for "white" LED replacements if your covers are already colored. There
are some very bright "white" LED's now available.
If you're good with a soldering iron, you can actually make these yourself.

I've used this on 2 motorcycles and 3 cars for 2-3 yrs, and it seems to work
well. I don't track the car so I can't vouch for it's performance
characteristics. It does seem to stay clear for the whole 2 yr cycle that I
use for changing brake fluid. Available in Wal-Mart and Autozone.

I've used Synpower and rotated it with Blue instead of Gold. Haven't had any problem
with it at
drivers schools. We have several SCCA racers locally who use it.

Scott, as far as I know,

ATE Superblue is getting reformulated, I expect a replacement to come out
soon. This is why all retailers are out of stock.
