I looked at the ad. He mispelled "RiMz".

It also has "flaken tires". With all that power, who can blame them :)

No worries mate, our fearless Aussie has much experience in all sorts of makes and
models. He has owned and modified other domestic and imported vehicles although his
preference for BMW is pretty clear these days.

I would still rather see Brett working for Jesse James in "Monster Garage". I think
this would be more his forte. I wonder if Jesse is accepting resume for potential
candidates.

If the batteries that maintain the SI lights have never been
replaced, yours may be operating in "does random things mode." Though
that is usually accompanied by nearby gages going bonko as well.
When reset, the green lights should be all on (when you turn on the
ignition). You've gone to the other end of the scale where the one
red light is lit, though I think either the "oil service" or
"inspection" light would always be lit with it too. The oil service
light is kinda dim, maybe you didn't notice it before? Or maybe
there's a bad connection. Or maybe the whole thing is bonko.
 First, try resetting the lights:
<http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/sil.html>
If that doesn't work, tape 'em over. You've already proved yourself
capable of changing your own oil about 3 times more often than
necessary.

Ron:

For a car the age of your's, it's amazing that the lights work at all. The
service interval (SI) lights on my '86 528e died after only about 5 years. You
don't say whether you've tried resetting the SI circuit. You should try that
first. If that doesn't fix the problem, and you find that the lights come back
on again too soon, the problem is most likely with the batteries soldered into
the printed circuit boards behind the dash. They are either Ni-Cad or lithium,
and are there to allow the car to keep track of service interval (SI) data,
even when the car battery is disconnected. When these batteries fail (which
they will after a few years), the SI lights will start to act strangely. In my
case, they came on and refused to be reset. The solution is to either ignore
the problem, replace the entire SI printed circuit board (which is what my
dealer advised at the time, for a price of several hundred $$), disconnect the
LED pack so that you're no longer bothered by it, or replace the batteries
yourself with a set of $5 batteries from Radio Shack. It's pretty easy, as
long as you're reasonably handy with a soldering iron and the thought of
dismantling your dashboard doesn't scare you too much. The following link
gives you most of what you need:

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/repair_faqs/sil.html

I also strongly advise that you also get a copy of the Bentley manual before
you dig into this.

Good luck.

Subject: [uuc] Bumper compression/"Lipo" - need advice

(My first post must not have gone through.) I've seen many e21s, e30s,
e24s, and e28s with their big U.S. bumpers pushed in. It cleans the look up
considerably! I completed the change on my '85 535i's front bumper. No
problem - remove shocks, drill to release gas pressure and drain oil,
compress, drill, tap, secure with threaded set screw (or one could weld),
reassemble - done.

I need advice on the 3 rear shocks. After drilling, a white/dry/foamy
substance came out. But still, I could not compress the shock. Do the rear
shocks have an internal spring or something? HOW HAVE YOU GUYS COMPRESSED
THE REAR SHOCKS? (The back of the shocks have a threaded stud protruding,
with a nut on it.) Thanks for the help.

Please - no discussions on "loss of protection" for the car. The car's old,
and certainly will still have "as much" protection as Euro bumpers - my
other option.

Thanks,

Subject: [uuc] Valve Cover Gasket Change and Flex-disc Question

Hello, my 1995 M3 with 79K miles is in need of a valve cover gasket
change and I wanted to make sure I've got all the parts identified
before I make an order. I have the following identified to do the job:
. Valve cover gasket part #11 12 1 738 701
. Valve cover spark plug hole gasket (2 qty) part #11 12 1 735 721
. Valve cover mount (2 qty)
. Valve cover seal washer (15 qty)
. Valve stem seal kit (2qty)
Please let me know if I am missing something here or if there are any
surprises I should know about.

Additionally, I have the 4/95 build date and am a little concerned about
the valve keeper failures I have read about. When I bought the car, the
previous owner put a JC chip that has the limiter removed, so I don't
know how much over-rev this car may have had. How much more difficult of
a job is it to replace these keepers while the cover is pulled? Do I
need special valve spring depression tools that are BMW specific? Also,
I have read of using a rope in the cylinder to keep the valves from
dropping, is that as straight forward as it seems?

On the Flex-disc question, I have noticed that it is has quite a few
cracks in the rubber, and since I have to drop the exhaust from the cats
back to weld up a hole that appeared at the front of the muffler, I
figured it's a good time to change that out too. What else is
recommended to change out with the flex-disc? Should I also swap out the
Center support bearing assembly at the rear for a new one with the
flex-disc? Is the center support bearing a total replacement, or just
the bearing inside?

Thanks for your advice, Frank

Subject: Re: [uuc] Valve Cover Gasket Change and Flex-disc Question

Frank,

It seems to me that you need to do a lot more research before you start this
job.

First, Jim C's chips do NOT remove the rev limiter. Raise it by one or two
hundred rpm perhaps, but not remove it. Your build date has the updated
keepers from the factory. That's no guarantee that they're never going to be a
problem, but it's a pretty safe bet that they're fine.

Your parts list includes "Valve cover mount" and "Valve stem seal kit". Not
sure what you mean by the mount, but the valve seals are of no use to you
unless you intend to go much further into the engine than you're stating.

In order to do the keepers, and/or valve seals, you must remove the cams,
lifters and carriers. Then you need to do the "rope in the cylinder" trick.
Personally, I just remove the cylinder head, it's simpler and safer.
