Many thanks to all who chimed in on this - from Brett's succinct "plug and
play" to Brad's multi part excursion into ABS and transmission swapping and
Scott's exploration of alternative options, all was helpful. As it turned
out the donor 535 went for more than I wanted to play, er, pay. I still
think a 535 with a 533 flywheel and 535 engine management would be pretty
nice in a 533. Maybe next time. I'll be watching for 535s to be rear-ended
in this area. so watcher ashes!

Almost being a relative term, when a true performance geek will consider
50-100lb a HUGE saving. 533i did not have power seats, that's got to be worth
20lb per seat, alone. Take out the ABS controller and that's another 10lb,
anything else is a bonus.

Except in reality, neither car is worth anything anyway.

Reality is that, other than mint, low mileage, collectors examples, once a car
reaches a certain age, or mileage, it's price stabilizes. You can always sell
a running car for $1500, regardless of it's condition, regardless of it's make
and model. If it runs and drives, it's worth $1500.

Taking this into account, and the fact that the original poster, with 230K+
miles on his car, will have to spend mucho maintenance dollars on the
drivetrain soon, then with $1000 for the parts, and some sweat equity, he's
onto a good thing.

Plus he can still get some money for the left over 535i parts, and his 533i
drivetrain. The bare cylinder head alone is worth $300-$500 because it fits
all the big sixes up until the Motronic 1.3 cars came along.

Sometimes a custom modification isn't worth it. For example, converting a
perfectly good E46 automatic to a manual. Sell the car and buy the one you
want. But all cars reach a point where it doesn't matter anymore. He won't
add value to his car, but he won't deduct value either.

Brett - thanks for expounding on plug and play. I have filed your tips on
the swap and on the dash replacement in the old grey matter. Noted and
agreed on doing the clutch while the engine/trans is out of the car. Much
easier, cheap insurance. Don't I recall you saying a week or so ago that
the 533 clutch will fit in a 535 bell housing but the 535 clutch won't fit
in the 533's? And do I recall reading that the '87 535 transmission is
stronger than the 533's? Moot now, since the 535 went for more than I
wanted to pay. But I'm watching..

Subject: [uuc] <E28> 02 Sensor broken wire.. Possible additional source?

Hi All,

Today I was getting the exhaust system looked at due to the little fire, and
having another hangar put in. When the car was up on the hoist, I was
looking at the undercarriage, and noticed that the O2 sensor had one of the
wires broken. There were 3 wires, 1 black, 2 white, and one of the white
ones was broken off. I am wondering if this is also contribuiting to the
lean running condition of the car... Anyone know?

Secondly Is the O2 sensor calibrates specifically for the car, or is it an
interchangable one that is used for other cars as well.

As for the exhaust., I had them add some heat sheilds around the resonators
to make sure it doesnt happen again, though I doubt it will since the lean
condition seems to have disappeared.

The car runs a lot smoother now, accelerates a lot better, and seems to be
using less gas.

Cheers

Subject: [uuc] <E28> Windshield Replacement..

Hi All,

I was on the highway recently behind a truck, and it threw up a large stone
that hit my windshield and caused it to spiderweb across the entire thing.

I called my insurance company, and found out that they don't cover
windshields with the policy.. Strange.. I have collision, fire/theft, and
all the other stuff, but no glass coverage. Someone explained that a lot of
insurance companies are removing the coverage of glass from their policies,
and unless you specifically ask for it, you dont get it.

Anyway, I now need another winshield, and since I am going to have to pay
out of pocket, I am wondering if there are other options beside the factory
one that came with the car. Were there any winshield options? like
coatings, or something?

As for price, I was quoted $250 CAD, or about $175 USD.. is that about the
right rate?

While I am at it I was thinking I would like the shadowline trim, and could
start with the windshield trim.. Where can I get the stuff? Is it only a
factory supplied thing? or is the shadowline trim made by others as well,
hopefully for a lesser price.

Any info would be appreciated

Cheers
Ron J

Yes. If your FPR was contributing 10% less fuel than the
original one, as Gary D. pointed out, and your EGO sensor
wire was cut, then the sensor couldn't tell the DME to
increase the rate of fuel injection to make up for the
reduced flow.

There are universal O2 sensors, and model-specific ones.
They do the same job. If you get a 4-wire universal sensor
(less $$), you'll have to modify it slightly to make it
work. I've not done that, so others will chime in.

Probably a good safety net.

Good deal.

Thanks,

She was brave enough to do the "stomp test" to get the code by telephone
direction, but won't take apart the trunk to pull a battery cable . . .
besides, she would lose her tunes, since the CD player would need to be
recoded and I have no record of which of the five in-dash CD players is
in her car (without pulling the unit and getting the serial number).

My newest State Farm policy, in addition to being 20% higher this
period through no fault of my own, contains an interesting new twist.
There will be no coverage for loss to any vehicle that results from
nuclear reaction - radiation, radioactive contamination, accidental or
intentional.
Now I can understand an insurer not wanting to pay for new
electronics for a million cars at once if someone sets off an EMP.
Generally, anything that can happen to multiple people at once isn't
covered by insurance. More interestingly, they will now surely be
refusing to pay for anything relating to faded paint, fabric, or
cracked dashboards, as UV light is most certainly radiation produced
by a nuclear reaction. It's not as if this was a common payout before
now, but I just find it curious.

I could've sworn some 533i's had crank windows. Brett
said that some 533i's had manual seats, so maybe this
is what I was thinking. . . who knows.

Where's the fun in just selling the car? Have you
taken into account the amount of time and money it
will cost to sell the car and find the one you want?

I also feel that the things you learn from working on
your own car are priceless. You can't earn that kind
of money by just buying another car.

Also, you can sell the old parts in the same way that
you would sell the old car.

Brett had some better thought-out comments on this
than I, so I'll stop here. : -)
