Scott -

I first personally changed my fuel filter at 86K. My dealer performed
an Inspection II at 42K that should have included a fuel filter change,
but I'm far from certain that it did. Frustration at never really
knowing what the dealer did and did not do (plus the ending of the
warranty period) was what ended my visits there.

I was curious, so I cut open my filter and flattened out the filter
paper. It was uniformly covered with a thin layer of what looked like
Mississippi mud. Probably sludge from the bottom of many service
station tanks. So I've decided to shorten my filter change interval
somewhat. For no particular reason, I've settled on about 25K.

I plan to cut the filter next time (in about 5K) too. If it isn't
clean, I'll continue the practice.

For whatever it may be worth, Japanese cars have relatively small fuel
filters and they seem to claim that they never need replacing. When the
factory installs them, they over tighten them, which distorts the
threads. They are a real bitch to change.

Oil has only a few paths out of the engine: Past a seal, such as a cam
cover or oil pan seal; past the rings; past the valve seals and guides;
and through the PCV system. If you have no visible leaks and the
increase was sudden and without an event that could have affected the
rings or valve seals, have a close look at the PCV system.

My car seems to be burning way to much oil lately, 1+ quart every 1k. I
am unable to find any leaks, I found a tiny bit of oil on the head
behind the t-stat housing, but it appeared to be minute. The Valve
cover gasket seems to be good. Under the car looks good. Anyone have
any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

I feel that the 6 speed is the only way to go (if you like to row gears)
and that the auto takes some of the fun out of the car. I'm not impressed
with the longevity of the clutch (20-30K) and I'm looking into aftermarket
alternates.

I would get a pro to do a leakdown test before purchase.

I would think I would see smoke if I it was getting into the combustion
chamber? I don't see how the PCV system could mess up, the hoses are
not leaking, and that is all that there is to it? Still trying to
figure this out.

I would've pulled the plugs before anything. What are you using out of
curiosity? NGK? Bosch?

Sounds like a misfire I'd chase the ignition stuff, look at
cap/rotor/test the coil, etc... After all that maybe I'd give up and
take it to a shop.

I would check your ignition wire set. I had the same problem with my M5
when I had the cylinder head rebuilt at 250,000 miles. My car would
hesitate until it reached 4500 rpm. When I removed the wire set there were
2 problems with the set. One of the screws holding down the wire cover
nicked the wires covering exposing wire. The second problem had to do with
the sensor around the 1st wire plug. The sensor was hanging on by a thread.
I replace the set of wires and the car like brand new.

$227!! Youch!!

I've found a site on the web that shows me how to
build my own EPROM programmer for $30 in parts. I've
found a few other sites that show me how to do an
emulator for a similar cash outlay.

So, about $100 for parts. Subtract how much I'll
learn by building it myself, converted to a dollar
amount, and building my own is looking like it's
almost free! : -)

When I get back from my quarter break around birthday
time in March, I'll go ahead and start hitting up some
places for parts.

My guess: It (was) a 3-series passenger door, before something very strong
and very thin had its way with it in a side impact? Holy cow. I can't even
think of anything that would make that impact, unless the car was sliding
sideways at 60 miles per hour into a telephone pole....
