Friend of mine did exactly the same thing, albeit in an Escort and with
the driver's door. Took two ten hour surgeries to put his left leg back
together, after deciding whether or not to save it at all. Then he just
about died when he had a bad reaction to the anesthetic. Tough little
stretch.

He's much better now. Not so much as a limp (it was about 12 years
ago).

Subject: [uuc] RE: 1995 BMW 540i 6-speed pre-purchase info?

I'd like to second everything that has been said before and throw in a bit
more regarding maintenance. I had a 1995 540 M-sport (6 speed) for a while
and although it remains the coolest car I've owned to date, it had a lot of
little nifty electrical widgets and problems came with them. Despite only
55k miles on the clock, they were starting to act up already (and based on
warranty maintenance records I saw, they had been somewhat troublesome since
day one). Watch out for broken power headrest cables and freaked-out
automatic dipping side mirrors to name a couple. The short clutch life that
was mentioned (as well as an awkward delay in clutch relieve) can be
ameliorated to some extent by removing a clutch release delay valve that BMW
put in. (I don't have a link handy, but there is a quick and easy removal
write-up on the web for this somewhere.)

I will say that this car is a wonderful machine, but I wouldn't recommend
spending your last dollar to buy one. I would anticipate maintenance
expenses to be significantly higher than most cars (say a '95 M3 for
example), particularly if you chase every electrical demon that crops up.

Good luck!

Kevin

Just had a friend send this to me. This is the difference between an amateur track
with lots of runoff and an FIA spec track with concrete barriers all around.

Ouch! Every time I get the urge, I see one of these:

It looks like a passenger's side door that was folded in half. There
is a door panel laying behind it. Do I get a prize?

Subject: [uuc] E34 525 alignment and steering stuff

I've got a dealership vs. independent question. The car needs an alignment
following my steering linkage replacement. The local dealer wants 3x what
another German marque shop wants. Is this a case of dealer overpricing or
will an alignment at the dealer really be worth the price?

Secondly, I didn't get any responses so I'll try this one again- the rear
tires of the car have a noticeable difference in wear from the inside edge
to the outside edge. Noticeable as in nearly down to the wear bars on the
inside and nearly new on the outside. The only thing that caught my
attention was that the front suspension ride height was 1" greater than what
the Bentley shows. Any suggestions where I need to look?

One more; the accelerator pedal squeaks, are there any bushings or whatnot
that could be replaced? Can it be lubed?

Cheers,

Roland

Yes Neil, from a marketing perspective, you would think that the seller
would realize the market potential of offering a more diverse range of
sexist gauge faces. To appeal to all, they should include women of all
races, sizes and shapes. (Have you noticed how the clothing catalogs and
department store ads now use, how do I say this without being offensive?
Models who are not skinny?) For that matter, why should they stop at
women? What about gauges for the Donna Seeleys and the Kathy Lyles of the
world? So much more profit to be made, if they would just expand their
offerings.

Not that I would buy them. As I think I originally said, like you, I
prefer white markings on a black background.

Scott

Scott:

With only 'white' women on there, not only is it
sexist, but also politically incorrect. <grin>.
Perhaps a line drawing would have been the way to go?

Oh well, I like the stock gauges anyway.

Tim,

Could you please elaborate on that.....the word "SNOW" doesn't
compute......it looks like this stuff I saw on the Weather Channel this
morning, but I just haven't personally seen any proof of it's existance.....

;-P

TWC did have an interesting clip this morning of folks driving on ice
somewhere where it's too damn cold.....including a shot of an E46 coupe
sliding into a rescue vehicle....
