Rumor is that the feds have also, with cooperation of the manufacturers, added
a cockpit voice recorder device to 4 wheel drive trucks randomly. What has
been most commonly heard just prior to major accidents has been things along
the line or "OH SHIT" or "Look out, that fools in our lane" except in
certain areas of the country. Recordings from around here were often "Hold
my beer, your ain't gonna believe this shit" -Bjob Thomas

Subject: [uuc] E36 Cruise Control

Hello all,

Today on a drive from Detroit to lovely Kokomo Indiana (I think there's
someone in the neighborhood - Steve Conner?) my cruise control developed
a mind of it's own. I tried to check out the archives, but like usual I
couldn't find anything. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I find
it near impossible to find anything in the archives.

Anyway, my cruise control suddenly disengaged, and I couldn't get it to
disengage. Then it suddenly engaged on it's own. Then I couldn't get
it to shut off. Then it started speeding up on it's own. After finally
getting it shut off, I was able to engage it again a little while later,
but the antics started again in a few minutes.

The car is a '94 325i with about 120,000 miles. I'll check out the
Bentley when I get home, but since I'm in a hotel with nothing better to
do I figured I'd see if there are any suggestions out there.

TIA,
Chris B.

Ed,

I insert the filter into the canister and then add the oil into the space
between the filter and housing.
It's the last thing I do during the oil change. (well other then topping off).

Ed,

On my E36 I did the same thing. The oil does drain to the
crankcase, but I liked to get the filter pretty well
saturated with clean oil before running the motor. I don't
know if it really does anything, but if you pour your last
quart in there, it makes it easier to check the level
accurately--it runs down to the pan pretty fast through
there.

Groups,

With my last post about the 524td Crankshaft same as
85' Lincoln Mark VII. I have found out that is is
true. A few people have emailed me saying that I
should go with a S50 3.0L crank for more displacement.
I have a few questions about this crank. Is the S50
crank cast or forged, as that was my main reason for
going with the 524td crank. Are piston prices going to
be around the same price if I went with the 524td vs.
S50 3.0L; ie. JE pistons? Anymore insights thats you
may have feal free to drop me a line.

Snap On does make one. I have two in my tool box.

FYI, it also fits M30 crank nuts.

The only one my Snap-On man could find was a dull grey impact socket.
What number is on yours?

Look at the Ireland Engineering 3.0L stroker kit. I
hear they incorporate a modified S50 crank along with
some custom pistons in their kit. You use your stock,
forged 325i rods. That should give you some
information on cost.

As for the crank, I hear the S50 is forged.

The way I see it, if you're going to 3.0L with the S50
crank, why not use the 3.2L crank and go a little
larger? I think you can hit 3.1L with no boring at
all and 3.2L with a 2+ overbore. This is the route I
think I may end up going when I rebuild my engine in
about 14 months from now.

But for now, I have to stick with the 325i cam and
valve springs that I'll have installed this April!

The 36 mm socket I bought years ago was originally used on the rear axle
nut for my first car: a '65 VW Beetle. Maybe that's how it got its name.

What difference does the colour of the socket make to it's job?

Mine are both the same, 6pt, 1/2" drive impact sockets.

Subject: [uuc] WANTED: E30 interior light delay

To all,

The upgrade pursuit continues....

Looking for the parts for the E30 interior light delay. There is a relay
located in the same place as the central locking module (behind and below LF
speaker in the kick panel), which is also the same as the one on the
E23/24/28 (don't know where it is located).

The switch is inside the door handle & has a small harness as part of it.
It is also the same as the E28 with the same option.

If your (dead) car has the "other" option, i.e. driver door lock heating,
the switch is different as it is made for the heating element. My
understanding is that the relay is still the same.

Willing to pay or trade hard to find Euro parts from the heart of the Alps.

TIA,

Greg in Geneva

That is a lot of work for an M20. At some point it is cheaper and better to
use an M50. That point is different for everyone.

I'm going to be at RPM in Austin around 7:30 in case anyone in the area
wants to get together as swap stories about their cars.

I'll tell you how I can't get my M3 over 180mph at Watkins Glen and you
can tell me about yours. BTW it's true, I can't get over 180 mph at the
Glen. (Trust me, I CAN'T get even close but I got your attention).

I'll be wearing a green BMW shirt and Red/yellow helmet with the GVC,
Parrot Head, and Apollo 11 stickers.

Carey
