Actually most shop that seviice BMW should have the
tool to do a DME diagnostic. It's not as rare as you
think. What problem is you car having? Two of the most
common DME killer is water and Dead Ignition coil.
The bad news is that, with OBDI you don't get as much
info out of the DME as a OBDII. So chances are it will
not give you the info you need. The good news is that
you have a pre-EWS OBDI DME. So, the easiest way to
troubleshoot it is to swap in a know good DME from a
'93 to'95(early prod,pre EWS) 325 car and it should
eliminate wether if you have a bad DME.
The DME on my '93 325i died on me when one of the
ignition coil died and took the DME with it. I was
able to find a used DME from a BMW parts recycler to
replace it.

- -------------------
All,
My no-start diagnosis leads me to suspect the DME.
I assume few, if
any independent shops would have the equipment to
diagnose and/or flash
a DME so my only option is a dealer. Correct? Can a
dealer test it
out
of the car? As the car is in my garage I'd rather not
tow it to the
dealer unless I absolutely have to. My car is a 94
325ic with manual
trans. It appears that only a 94-95 DME will do as a
replacement, is
this correct? I know 96-up OBD II won't work, but can
I use a 92-93
325
DME? How can I identify a DME that's interchangeable?
 If I get one
used/salvage yard etc. can I just plug it in and go,
or must it be
re-flashed by the dealer? Last, if the DME is faulty
is there any
place
that repairs them or offers used units with core
exchange?
Thanks,
Brian Daley

DO NOT do this.

If you suspect you have a bad DME, DO NOT install a different DME to test your
theory.

Faulty DMEs RARELY hurt another component. Fautly components almost ALWAYS
hurt the DME.

Scenario. You suspect your DME. You borrow your friend's DME and put it in
your car. Same component that fried yours, frys his. Now you buy TWO
DMEs......

Do it the other way around, put YOUR DME in HIS car. If his car exhibits the
same symptoms yours has, then you know it's the DME.

Does your car have a cassette player? Are the beeps really loud? They are
the stereo's way of saying it is time to clean the tape heads with the
official BMW cleaning cassette (a.k.a. Alsop). If no cassette, then I
don't know.

Weak starter solenoid? Messed up teeth on the flywheel?

Remove the bulbs. Clean out the sockets really good, maybe even with a
wire brush (while the power is OFF!). Buy and install new, high quality
German bulbs.

I think what you are missing is the alarm wiring harness. There is a
black connector behind the glove box. The wiring harness has a black
connector, which plugs into the car's connector, and the green connector
you are apparently looking for, which plugs in to the alarm box itself.
The wiring harness also has a connector for the hood switch and another
connector that doesn't seem to be used.

The wiring harness comes with the factory alarm kit, but if you need to
purchase it separately, it is part number 82 1 11 469 446. Cost is about
$90.

Brett/Gruppe

I literally took apart all of the wiring and harness connectors in the
space behind the glove box to gain access to the very back part of the
area closest to the fire wall. Still no green or black BMW OEM prewired
harness to connect my BMW keyless remote entry module. I literally
pulled the wiring harness for the windows, locks, and virtually every
thing in my way to gain access, and still no remote harness connector to
be found. This is the first BMW that says it's prewired and not have any
evidence that it ever had one. Was that an option on a '97 328iS? I've
always found them easily in the previous installations of OEM BMW
keyless remote entry units. Is there any possibility that MY car doesn't
have a prewired connector as stated? Should I take it to the dealer w/
the glove box out and let them try to find it? I'm over trying to find
it.

TIA

The connector should be taped back against the main harness at the
firewall.

It may be totally covered in tape, making it hard to spot.

Hello Group,

I am looking at, and maybe buying a '89 E34 that has one issue that I am
not
sure about. The seller says the A/C works fine, however it does not
come
out of the front vents, it only comes out of the vents in the back seat
area. Does anybody have any experience with this problem? What does it
take to fix it besides fists full of cash and a trip to the stealer? Is
this a DIY for a competent shade tree mechanic?

Also, can anyone recommend a good independent shop in Houston to perform
a
thorough prepurchase inspection? Thanks in advance for the help/advice.
Off list replies are welcome.
