I'm not claiming credit for this idea, but last year, a bunch of friends
were joking about really ridiculous mods for one's car. Being inspired by
the then-legal V8 M3 GT's flame-spewing exhaust, we were surprised that no
one had come out with a device to emulate this cool racing look yet.

I'm still waiting for the glowing rotors mod.

Even if you really want a knob that old, my '81 320i had a screw-on, so
don't expect all E21 knobs to fit an E30.

Hell, my Dad did that back in the 50's with his
'52 Chevy. Used an old spark coil from a Model A
Ford and a spark plug installed in the tail pipe.
He said all you had to do was turn off the ignition
while the car was moving, leave the car in
gear and leave your foot on the gas. The engine
would pump plenty of F/A mixture into the exhaust
system. Then just touch off the spark coil and
WHOOOOSH. He claims he was only able to do it three
or four times before he blew the muffler clean off
the car!

This is one of his Army stories that he retells
every couple years. He ususally follows it up with
the one about how he spent the night AWOL in a corn
field because he got a little drunk and did somehting
that caught the attention of the MPs. Snuck back
into the base in the wee hours of the morning and
all was well.

Then there's the one about how he and his buddies
smuggled some training grenades (no shrapnel) off
the training range...

http://members.roadfly.com/m_ben/m3_rear_rotors_a.jpg

E36 M3 & M coupe/roadster rear rotors - brand new, one still in sealed
packaging, the other has been removed & put onto a hub to check clearance but
never torqued down. low dealer retail is ~$80/each (most charge $90), $120 obo
+ actual shipping from 48220.

these are directionally vented rotors, unique to the E36 M3 & M coupe &
roadster.

it's time to get the car ready for the track season, why not save yourself a few
bucks while you're at it. these are factory/OE parts, not cheaper Brembos. if
you want to go cheap, buy the Brembos from one of the Worldpak people, it's your
car & your choice.

Subject: [uuc] Strange Fault Code <E36>

Does anyone out there know what the following fault codes mean? It is a
readout of my 1996 328i with the "check engine" light on. I am using a
Peake R5/fcx code/reset tool.

They are on chart 2 of the manual, errors F5 and F6:

Code F5: Secondary air system flow too low, Cyl #1-3

Code F6: Secondary air system flow too low, Cyl #4-6

What sensor is this reading? I checked the air filter just to see if it
was something obvious, and it was fine. The car seems to drive fine,
with no noticeable loss of power. Any suggestions?

Subject: [uuc] <E36> Child Seat Tether Mount?

Greetings Gruppe,

I was wondering if any one on this board has managed to find a good
attachment point for a tether associated with a forward facing child seat.
This tether attaches to the top of the child-seat back and is supposed to
keep it from wanting to tumble forward in a 'rapid deceleration' scenario.

I found an unused boss, with threaded hole, just below the parcel shelf and
behind the rear bulkhead from inside the trunk, but ofcourse no obvious
opening in the parcel shelf. I wonder whether this boss is an
appropriate/intended mounting point. I am aware that BMW does not sell a kit
for the E36 (at least here in the US of A).

Thanks for any input.

Subject: [uuc] <wob> a valuable lesson

I've always maintained that the largest part of avoiding speeding
tickets (other than not speeding) is paying attention to your
surroundings. It was shown to me again today.
I was cruising up 4-lane-wide I-280 today in Mountain View. 3 of us
in lane 1, doing about 85, somewhat faster than the other traffic. It
was Pontiac, VW, and BMW (me). Large space in front of Pontiac. As
we went past a CHP who was clearly preparing to enter the roadway on
the right shoulder, the VW and I both immediately lifted, signaled
into lane 2, and slowed to 70 with the others. The Pontiac did not.
The ol' Crown Vic was not wasting time. He shot past with an
impressive display of acceleration.
I actually had to punch it again to see what was happening up ahead
because of a small hill crest. What I saw made me laugh. The CHP
pulled up behind the Pontiac and followed him for a good half mile at
our original speed, still in lane 1. At that point, Mr. driving
excitement finally saw the lights.
Guess how bad I feel for him?

I believe there is also a motor mount issue.

Check with eh m535i list, they have a complete parts list for a late 6er
into an E28

I am absolutely certain that BMW provides a means of tethering a rear
facing child seat in the rear seat of any E36.

Do you have a coupe or a sedan?

Turns out this might be information that someone else can use:

For E31, E32, E34, *E36*, E38, E39, and E46:

Five parts, the ETK calls for three each as there are three locations on
the rear shelf of your E36 -
Screw 72 11 1 922 499
Hex Bolt 72 11 8 191 870
Flat Washer 07 11 9 900 052
Support, Child Seat 72 11 8 187 599
Bush 72 11 8 187 601
