His max price is $17k. Looking for a 1997+ 3-series. A 1997 M3 would be gravy but probably out of his range. We're not hesitant about getting a car that needs some work (shot supension, etc) to save some bucks. Anyone with any leads on a car that would fit this profile? Anyone have something in their garage they need to move? :) Thanks in Advance, Eric M. How old is the cluster you're trying to install? Your car has no coding plug, if the replacement cluster is of a later variety, it requires a coding plug and adapter harness. It also then needs to be coded to the vehicle via the dealer computer system. If it is of the early variety, then it still needs to be coded with DIS or GT-1 All of this, and you'll now have a pretty new cluster showing ZERO mileage. Bang goes your resale value. Your alternative is to take the car to the dealer and tell them you want the mileage transferred, according to SIB 62 02 95. They will need the car for 6-10 days to do this. - ----------------------------------------------------- BMW Special Tool Rentals Pay per incident tech support - ----------------------------------------------------- Brett Anderson KMS (440) 338 1650 www.koalamotorsport.com OSS committee member > -----Original Message----- > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Jamie Howton > I just purchased a new (refurbished) instrument cluster for my 95 M3 > because I have been having problems with the tachometer and coolant temp > gauges only working some of the time. I'm hoping that someone will see this and give me something to chew on; I'm throwing this out to the list again. On Ziller (my 1995 540ia), the auto-tranny has a fairly consistent delay shifting between 3rd and 4th. It's very pronounced if I'm getting on it. Right when it decides to shift up from 3rd to 4th, the car revs high, and a good second later it slams into 4th with a jerk. If I'm not hammering it, I still notice the delay but it's not as pronounced. Last year I had a local independent shop replace the tranny fluid with factory fluid to the tune of $150. Is this a sign on an impending failure? Or an easy fix? Any ideas? Thanks Brett, The "new" cluster is of the correct type for my car, ie. no coding plug. I have made an appointment for the dealer for Monday morning. The service advisor said that they can code the cluster and transfer the mileage while I wait. I guess I'll see what happens on Monday when I am standing there at the counter... Ummm, that was my point when I said "Steve has tons of room on his M42". I was fully aware he only had four cylinders....kind of like those E30 M3s...they are lacking two cylinders. :-) Regards, Rich ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2003 09:17:48 -0800 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: [E36] street/track pads Lars, I've use the Porterfield R4 pads for 2 driving schools, and I love them! I've only had the fronts for 2 schools, and they show no signs of wearing out yet, but I haven't measured them. At the second school I used their R4S pads on the rear instead of the R4 pads from the first school (those are gone). They held up fine too. I was thinking of putting the R4S's on the car for street driving, but I've been waiting for someone else to report how long they last and whether they squeal much on the front. Someone was going to give a report, but I can't remember who (Rich D?). I have no reason to believe that the resutls would be any different on an E36 (ignorance is bliss). But I bet the flat rate manuals specify more time. Or, for an afternoon of fun, you can do it yourself with a floor jack and jack stands, a modest collection of air tools, some good spring compressors and an assortment of wrenches and hammers. Or to save a little money, do the rears yourself (easy job, also replace the upper mounts with E46 convertible mounts). The air tools and spring compressors are only needed on the front.
