Air tools? I've done this many times with no air tools.

To each his or her own, I guess. The cruiser style fits me just fine. When
I get on the touring bike I don't like having my feet tucked under. I am
too old to go back to doing push-ups on the bars :-) Most older folks I
talk to that get even sport-tourers end up with risers to get the weight off
the hands and wrists.

I will let you take a spin on my VTX1800c - that should blow ALL the "slow and
vague" cobwebs out for you :-) Better still, Honda is doing a huge 1800cc
test ride - you can use their dealer locator to see who in your area is
participating. They are doing the GL1800's and the VTX 1800's. Hoo-Hoo - free
ride!

With my insurance, sports bikes are WAY up there (all those crashes and
expensive tupperware and mirror claims), then usually touring type bikes
(again, expensive claims on fairings, hard bags, etc), then cruisers. I
guess they now if you just drop a bike with plastic or bags there is going
to be an expensive claim. The prices for the LT an GL were close to the
same, I THINK the BMW may have been a little cheaper.

When I was looking at LTs vs GL1800s I found lots of used LT for cheap
(relatively) at Cycletrader. I just looked, and the LTs are going for the
same or less then comparable GL1800s - $10-13k for 01 and 02 bikes with low
miles. Since the GL cost less originally, then it would appear that they are
not holding value as well. You could be right on the other BMWs, I just don't
have any interest in another boxer twin. The new R1200CL looks interesting,
but they should have put the K bike motor in it. Ride reports say lack of
power is the biggest problem. I have some friends that got GS and GS
Adventures and they love them - but I like to stick to the pavement. My
biggest (actually shortest) problem with most BMW motorcycles is the tall seat
height. I am just too short to be comfy on most of what they make.

>Plus - it's not all about cost - riding is a passion. Cars are
>about cost - they're just transportation.

That is sure not true for me - if I just wanted basic transport I would not
have spent the extra on the 330i :-) I also pay to have a convertible
available any time I want it. I had a C5 'vette, but it was in the shop a
lot and was very expensive to own and insure. I sold it last year and have
an S2000 now. It is SO MUCH more fun to drive - not nearly as much torque
but still a blast to drive. Driving one with the razor sharp handling and
the perfect gearbox should put a smile an any enthusiast's face.

Honda has a new ECU out to "fix" the "problem". I know a lot of GL1800
riders and very few have had a problem with this, and none had and damage
to the bike because of it. I don't think any GL1800 riders have had the
problems with the stators like the 1500cc bike owners had - but it may be
too soon to tell.

The GL1800 has a 4 year unlimited mile warranty and a 3 year extension ($0
deductible) can be had for $350-400. 7 years with unlimited miles is a lot
of riding. Some folks I know have 30-50k on theirs already with YEARS to
go.

I did a cost comparison, and if you got the LT-E and a GL1800 and got all
the same stuff (including the GPS) the cost came out close to the same at
MSRP. It you don't want or need all the stuff, you end up cheaper with the
'wing. GL1800s with ABS can be had lots of places for a discount ($16k or so)
the basic LT is $18k and I had lots of problems finding a much of a discount
(too few dealers = little competition). I think the BMW is 3yr, unlimited
miles and they don't have an inexpensive way to extended.

I think the LT is drop-dead gorgeous! They have the anti-dive suspension and
all come with ABS (it can be a problem to find an ABS 'wing), lots of other
things as well. I just like the 'wing better - more power, larger dealer
network, better warranty, lower seat, etc. I never thought I would ever
get old enough to get a 'wing, but the GL1800 is a different animal. Honda
has a 6.9% / 60 month deal going now, but BMW almost always has MUCH better
financing options - even leases - a big plus is not paying cash.

That is my type of riding too - avoid the interstate at all costs :-)
I can ride for hours and get home with just 200-300 miles on the bike. An
TN has some of the best riding roads around - the folks that laid out most
of the roads appear to have lost their straight-edges :-) I need a bike
for longer trips and two ride 2-up with my wife. We can ride OK on the Valk
I/S but I think we would be better off on a GL1800 :-)

Our discussion is a moot point anyway, I see Mr.Fox has struck a deal and is
now the proud owner of a 750 Katana :-)

Sorry for the all caps - I didn't transcribe it..

"ALL THE RHETORIC ON WHETHER OR NOT WE SHOULD GO TO WAR AGAINST IRAQ HAS
GOT MY INSANE LITTLE BRAIN SPINNING LIKE A ROULETTE WHEEL. I ENJOY READING
OPINIONS FROM BOTH SIDES, BUT I HAVE DETECTED A HINT OF CONFUSION FROM SOME
OF YOU. AS I WAS READING THE PAPER RECENTLY, I WAS REMINDED OF THE BEST
ADVICE SOMEONE EVER GAVE ME. HE TOLD ME ABOUT THE KISS METHOD (KEEP IT
SIMPLE, STUPID!). SO, WITH THIS AS A THEME, I'D LIKE TO APPLY THIS THEORY
FOR THOSE WHO DON'T QUITE GET IT. MY HOPE IS THAT WE CAN SIMPLIFY THINGS A
BIT AND RECOGNIZE A FEW IMPORTANT FACTS.

HERE ARE 10 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN VOICING AN OPINION ON THIS
IMPORTANT ISSUE:

1) BETWEEN PRESIDENT BUSH AND SADDAM HUSSEIN...HUSSEIN IS THE BAD GUY.

2) IF YOU HAVE FAITH IN THE UNITED NATIONS TO DO THE RIGHT THING, KEEP THIS
IN MIND: THEY HAVE LIBYA HEADING THE COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND IRAQ
HEADING THE GLOBAL DISARMAMENT COMMITTEE. DO YOUR OWN MATH HERE.

3) IF YOU USE GOOGLE SEARCH AND TYPE IN "FRENCH MILITARY VICTORIES," YOUR
REPLY WILL BE: "DID YOU MEAN FRENCH MILITARY DEFEATS?"

4) IF YOUR ONLY ANTI-WAR SLOGAN IS "NO WAR FOR OIL," SUE YOUR SCHOOL
DISTRICT FOR ALLOWING YOU TO SLIP THROUGH THE CRACKS AND ROBBING YOU OF
THE EDUCATION YOU DESERVE.

5) SADDAM AND BIN LADEN WILL NOT SEEK UNITED NATIONS APPROVAL BEFORE THEY
TRY TO KILL US.

6) DESPITE COMMON BELIEF, MARTIN SHEEN IS NOT THE PRESIDENT. HE ONLY PLAYS
ONE ON TV.

7) EVEN IF YOU ARE ANTI-WAR, YOU ARE STILL AN "INFIDEL" AND BIN LADEN WANTS
YOU DEAD, TOO.

8) IF YOU BELIEVE IN A "VAST RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY," BUT NOT IN THE DANGER
THAT HUSSEIN POSES, QUIT HANGING OUT WITH THE DELL COMPUTER DUDE.

9) WE ARE TRYING TO LIBERATE THEM. HE IS TRYING TO KILL US.

10) WHETHER YOU ARE FOR MILITARY ACTION OR AGAINST IT, OUR YOUNG MEN AND
WOMEN OVERSEAS ARE FIGHTING FOR US TO DEFEND OUR RIGHT TO SPEAK OUT. WE ALL
NEED TO SUPPORT THEM WITHOUT RESERVATION.

No comment on my part, except I really like #6.. :-) And #3
doesn't work.. I tried it (one would assume comedic license
was used..)

Not Dennis Miller but still funny

This particular offering did run in the Times Record News, the only
newspaper in Wichita Falls, Texas. It appeared as a Letter to the Editor on
26 February 2003, with its author identified as W. Wayne Schields of Wichita
Falls.

To Whomever May Give A Darn,

Jack (Elephant Motorsports) sold me R4S ("S" as in "street", not
plural) pads for all four corners of my '95 VW GTi. Great stopping
power for the street. No squeal in the first month or so of use.

I liked the Porterfield R4 pads for track use on my '93 325is. They
squealed like a dump truck when cold. I've since moved to Hawk Blues
for the front.

I was underwhelmed and overcharged for Pagid Blues I tried on the
track. I guess they're supposed to be a high end street pad, so it's
not a huge surprise that they didn't perform for me on the track.

YMMV, yada-yada-yada...
