As a tremendous fan of both wide open throttle and penny pinching fuel
economy I was very interested to read of your instructions for maximizing
MPGs while keeping the right foot buried. So excited in fact, that I rushed
out to put your plan into practice. All seemed to be going well until I
turned off the ignition at 40mph while in the middle of a sweeping left hand
turn. I expected to coast down to about 20mph and then restart the engine
but ran out of left turn and was unable to stay on the road long enough to
do so. Is there perhaps some other secret modification you made to your
fuel economy rally car's steering that helped matters?

I concur with Mark, R4S pads after some wear in squeal like hell. OTOH, I've
done a few track days on them running dedicated brake ducting, and they hold
up fine. Good pedal feel, no fade, etc.

My next set of pads are going to be Ferodos...
Here is an Email from a Vendor who sells them
He posted this to the E36M3 mailing list back in Feb>>>

"Of course what I say doesn't mean jack because I sell them, but everything
about the Ferodo DS2500 is impressive, including it's history.

Since Ferodo Racing is in Italy, they were approached by a well known
manufacturer of exotic Italian machinery to produce a pad that stopped liked
a race pad without squealing. Stop multiple times from 180MPH to traffic
speeds on the Italian autoroutes.

Friction values from dead cold rivals that of the popular Hawk Blue, which
as you know is a full-on race pad. And the pedal feel and modulation
characteristics, and friction vs temperature curve are unrivalled. Similar
to its DS3000 big brother, but tamed for road use.

The autocrossers I've given these things to generally crap themselves
they're so excited. Well, uhh, not literally crap themselves (have to
disclaim in case of humor impairment). But they are pretty happy with 'em.

Caveats:

- -They dust. Comparable to factory Jurids?
- -Even though they do have good high temperature resistance (1000+F) they
still aren't a full-on race pad. They're a street pad. But, of the track
guys that I have had use them, there have only been a few complaints that
they were inadaquate for track duty (lapping days and schools, not racing).
These folks must be fairly mild brakers, 'cause I personally could burn them
up in a few laps (I'm extremely abusive on brakes). But, the experience
range of the guys, who have used these dual duty and not had issues with
fade or excessive wear, range from beginners to 10 year veteran instructors.
It's a compromise, but IMO a smart one. These things work pretty good.

Actually, AP-Racing, who have supplied many brands of pads through the years
with the brake kits of their manufacture (for fast-road use), finally
settled down with one pad a few years back and haven't changed since.
*That* says alot."

I've tried these on three different BMW's. They're great for the first
couple of months and then they squeal like a garbage truck. No matter what
you do to try and quiet them down (leading edge chamfer, anti-squeal goop,
anti-seize, etc etc etc).

They are loud, loud pads.

(the also overheat and fade easily on the track, faster than stock BMW pads)

Good luck.

Subject: [uuc] <misc> mazda rev it up results

I went to the 1st Mazda Rev It Up competition in Alameda today.
Here's my report for those of you who are signed up for other cities.

What's to see:
All the current Mazda models, including the RX-8, all open for
sittin'. A couple or 3 race cars too. The Mazda guys hanging around
seem to be friendly and knowledgeable. You'll notice that none of the
manual tranny models have shift knobs on them. That wasn't by plan,
but the Mazda people discovered in the 1st half hour that their shift
knobs are far too easily unscrewed. I'm checking Jim Ochi's trunk for
shift knobs next time I see him. (ha ha, just kidding Jim)
Falken is there with a bunch of their tires. The guy I talked to
actually knew about tires, which was nice.

What's to do:
In addition to the autocross competition, there are 3 other
exercises. The brake & turn, where you can test the ABS while
turning. The slalom, and the racing line practice which is another
autocross course with connect-the-dots apex cones marked out for your
assistance. Each of these has instructional videos playing while you
wait, and a real racer guy explaining things, of whom you may ask
questions. John Rutherford, Adam Andretti, Ted Prappas, and Randy
Tolsma are really there. Not just their pictures. There's also a
Mazda drive section - I think that's just a slow speed test drive
course more for the visitors than the competitors. I also saw some
go-karts running amongst some straw bales. In addition, there are a
bunch of arcade games and Xbox setups.
The main event has you driving a Mazda 6 w/V6, lowered Eibach
springs, Falken Azenis, Bosal exhaust, a harness, and unfortunately an
auto tranny. You only get 2 runs (not at the same time), and cones
are 2 seconds each, which is a huge penalty for a ~33.5 second course
(that's pro time, not mine).
Scoring is equalized based on the latest pro time into a 1000 point
system so that scores can be compared all across the country for all
15 events. I scored a 521 which kept me on the leader board for the
club class until at least 2PM when I left. (my 2nd run was great
until I hit that cone. %!&^%$!) Those UUCers who participate should
post their scores here too for bragging rights!

Summary:
Good organization, lotsa people, fun, not enough runs, expensive
food, more stuff to do that I thought. Take a non-car friend, they
can get some valuable instruction and a little seat time for not much
cash.

I believe I mentioned that one needs a car with manual steering, brakes and
transmission. Also, coasting with the engine off is illegal in many states.

The biggest secret is to jack up the rear suspension so the car always
drives downhill and stop watching so much NASCAR.

just got a sparco solid front strut bar for my e30 race car today. went to
put it on and...no way. struts are about 1/2 in too close together. tried
jacking the front end up and letting the suspension hang, no luck. anyone
have any tricks for "spreading" the struts a little to get this to fit?

thanks!

The strut towers angle in towards each other. You may have to drop the
struts out of the towers, place the bar, then pull the struts back up
through the holes.

Or, perhaps you needed the bar a little earlier? Using the above method,
plus a port-a-power between the towers, will get you back to where you
should be, but this method will reduce your negative camber.

Lesser of two evils is.....?

Just wondering, the bar that runs across the head on an M20 engine... it
that a spray bar (little holes that hose the cam) or just plumbing?

I have a feeling that a slightly bent one of these may be a bad thing...

There is a rumor (rumour) going around the net that says that there
were two specs of E30 body shells one with a slightly wider distance
between the towers.

I don't believe it and have looked at frame straightening company
specifications in Europe and here in the US and they all show a single
dimension between the towers.

I recommend spreading the towers using an old Buick bumper jack.

Where did you get it? Will the E30 one fit a 325is, or just the M3? I
have heard there are great buys to be found for them on eBay . . .

Ireland Engineering (whose strut brace is a clone if not just a repainted
Sparco) sells two different lengths, saying they have consistently
encountered two distinct widths of E30 chassis.

No idea if that's true, but you may want to consider getting a short size
Ireland bar to keep your camber the same. See their measurements and
statements here:
