all early e12's had that hood design, it didn't matter what engine. they
went to the 'narrow ridge down the center' design when they changed to the
e12 528i. i had a 76 530i with the same bulge. they also moved the gas
filler from the back of the car next to the lic plate to the side at the
same time.

Does anyone know if any of the early E28s in the U.S. were ever sold with
the 14-inch E12 style turbine wheels?

The reason I ask is that on the 10 minute drive from my office in Mill
Valley to lunch in Sausalito today I passed three E28s with E12 Style
14-inch rims.

You gonna go to Home Depot for some paint rollers this weekend?
Might as well have a rig that matches the car. ;)

$8k is a damn good price for a Touring with the alusil block. I paid $13k
for my alusil-block '94 530iT with 98k miles 3 years ago. Aside from the
dual sunroofs, check that the rear glass and hatch release mechanisms are
working properly. The hatch wiring sometimes gets chewed. Although the
brochures say the '94s have dual airbags, some early-prod. '94s have only a
driver airbag. Check the power steering hoses for leakage -- they're not
particularly easy to access if they need to be replaced. Fortunately PS hose
leaks are often fixed by replacing the clamps.

With the autobox, the 530iT is slow off the line, but it's a great highway
cruiser -- smooth, quiet and a great 5th-3rd kickdown when needed. If you're
not too crazy with the kickdown, the car can get 26-28mpg on long highway
trips. I think Dinan makes a trans chip for the 530, but as others have
suggested, the trans really needs to visit Brett Anderson. My 530iT's auto
trans liked Brett so much it decided to stay there when I brought the rest of
the car back to NJ :)

Folks - may have a chance to pickup a '94 (may be titled '95
although they didn't really make any '95's) E34 530 touring for
SWMBO from a friend.

Has gotten (within past 6 months) the new block.. low mileage
car - about 50k on car, 5k on the engine.

Besides the door-checks, and the dual sunroofs - is there
anything else I should be looking for? (I'm familiar with the
E34 in general from my '92 525i..)

I seem to remember hearing there was a transmission
controller box update to better match the shift points to
the somewhat limited power the small V8 made. I don't think
power itself will be a problem - she's happy with the 5
cylinder Volvo.. but she's always wanted a touring..

Price looks good - around $8k, and the car looks nice..
hasn't been pranged, interior clean.

TIA..

Subject: [uuc] E12 hoods

To all,

Brett is 100% spot on, but I can make it more complex. There are three
hoods used on the E12 worldwide, check your ETK.

a) Totally flat (I've seen an early, can not remember year 72-74, 520i with
this. Early EURO 520i means with the tii engine, late had the baby six with
K Jetronic, like an E21 323i. Believe the pancake hood was only used on
earlz 4 cyl cars and perhaps was superceded to the huntchback hood in 1975
(one size fits all and perhaps occasional rubbing issues).

b) Huntchback (like what you saw in the Roundel). Whatever engine versions
got this (big six 525, 528i & NA 530i), this was only used up to 1976 model
year cars.

c) Razorback (all versions from 1977 model year to end of E12 production,
1981 for most of the world & 1983-84 for South African production).

Terms are mine. Hope this makes life more interesting for E12 fans.

Greg in Geneva

He sold it before I could get'hold of him.. went for $9k,
he replaced it with a 2000 528iT. He had paid $7,300 for
it a few months ago from the local BMW dealer - right after
they put the new block in it. Seems it sat on their lot
and nobody wanted it - and he runs a high-end import lot
as a hobby (really.. he has lots of $$$, like LOTS..
and he likes cars and bikes.. it's a way to have fun and
not cost him anything.. he makes a profit off his hobby..)

Bummer.. Did they ever come to the US with the 5 speed?
Give SWMBO the 528i..

Sure they made '95s. On the order deck, just not many built for
stock. I sold several. The transmission update actually occurred
within the '94 MY. If I remember correctly, and I'm much older now
than then, all 530s with the dual airbags had the "real" adaptive
transmission. Just made it not jump all over the place gear-wise.
Didn't really help the power, in fact the other nikasil updates other
than block replacement served to make this one pig of a wagon. I
honestly think the 525i is as quick or quicker, and I don't care what
they say in print. The later cars had upgraded interiors, too, like
leather-covered armrests, etc.

The only advantage seems to be that AST was standard of the 530iT.
Good price though, mileage dependent.

Shame. Even 9K was a great price if it was clean. Most sell for $15K
still.

No Tourings came with manual transmissions for the US market. That's why I
get paid what I do, right Drew?

Cost. I think Neil Maller mentioned that on his note.

Where did Kathy get hers? At least in the past and maybe not so
distant past the double adjustables are made from single adjustables at
shops like t.c.kline's or True Choice Motorsports.

When you compare the cost of a Koni DA to other dampers out there they
don't seem like such a 'no brainer' choice. The Advance Design ones at
that point look like an attractive alternative, if not just plain
better one.

I've noticed some of the front runner World Challenge cars are using
Advanced Design dampers although others like Will T. or the SSF guys
are going all out with Motons and Ohlins.

Yeah but we all know you work fast. :-)

Carlos
91 M3 <--adjusted damper settings about 6 times now, it takes me a
good hour or more. :(

The early (USA 1982) E28 cars had BBS RA style wheels until 1983.Then
the 528e cars ran 14",the 533i and 535i ran the 390 TRX's.

This is completely untrue. And some of the worst advice I've ever heard!
yikes! the stock springs on the rear of the M3 have a *lot* of travel there
is no way they coilbind before the shock bottoms out. You are risking not
only damaging a pretty expensive shock, but there is a greater danger. If
you bottom out the shock, you will tear the rear shock towers. I've seen it
happen and it's GNARLY. You have to buy new shock towers from BMW and get
them welded in, easily a $600 - $1000 job.

Please please don't follow this advice.

There is washer fluid slowly leaking from the driver's side headlight washer
on my '97 328ic. It appears to be leaking from, or near, the nozzle.

Bentley's doesn't address it.

Anyone been there?

Final drive oil change today. After most of the oil drained I stuck my
finger in the drain hole and <horror> found parts.

These parts: (not the penney)
http://www.cheap-tracks.com/misc/Im000359.jpg
http://www.cheap-tracks.com/misc/Im000363.jpg

I put a strong magnet on the end of a stick and fished around - only got a
little dust and a couple small slivers of metal.

'85 535i LSD 213,000 miles. No apparent problems - the parts obviously left
their proper home some time ago. Any feel for what these might be and how
urgent it is that I should have someone peek inside the final drive?

Thanks
