The Land Rover bolt pattern and offset is different from every other 4x4 in
the U.S. and since Land Rover did not sell many vehicles in the country
aftermarket wheels are hard to find. American Racing was still selling some
(ugly IMHO) alloy wheels for the RR/Disco/Defender a few years ago. Why not
just keep the stock alloys or get some steel wheels. For some reason every
16 year old kid wants to put new wheels on their car. I was just talking to
some BMW club guys and every one of them said they would have kept the stock
wheels on their car today (10-25 years later).

Subject: [uuc] Shifting Squeak

Every since owning the car (325Ti) I've noticed a small squeal or squeak
when shifting. It only happens under higher RPM hard shifting. Paying
closer attention I also noticed the noise happens approximately at the
point when the clutch pedal is fully up and I'm stomping down on the gas.
I can not reproduce the noise, at least to an audible level, any other time
- - ie in park, low speeds, engine off, etc. It doesn't seem to really
affect anything, and the noise hasn't gotten any worse since I first heard
it. From my position driving it sounds like it's coming from the
transmission area or forward. I think Bill Schofield at the autocross
thought I caught a wheel shifting into second - though I'm sure this is not
happening!! But that's almost what it sounds like from a bystander's
position.

I've lubed the gas pedal line, springs, etc. And the clutch fluid was just
drained and replaced - no change in the sound. Any ideas?

Listers,

For those that might be interested, the Bluegrass Chapter is holding their
annual driver school at Putnam Park Road Course in Mt. Meridian, IN (about
40mis SW of Indianapolis) this coming weekend! This event is shared with a
Club Race so it is a very fun filled event to attend. If you are thinking
of doing an event in the near future, this one is a great one to do and
there are spots open.

If you have not been to Putnam Park you are missing out. It is a fast,
safe, and fun track to drive. It has a few technically challenging corners
and is a great place to learn. The weather in June is typically quite nice,
sunny, sometimes a bit hot but the last few years it has been rain free
(knocking on wood!!).

So, if you find yourself with some free time, come and check it out, it's
great fun!

Subject: [uuc] WTB E36

I am looking for an E36 for an engine transplant project and here is what I
am looking for:

- - Since the engine, trans, suspension and brakes will be replaced I am
looking for a high-mileage car,
somewhere close to 200k, or even more.
- - Any year is fine as long as the price is right. (94 or newer is better for
the dual airbags)
- - Auto or 5-speed is okay.
- - Any color is okay as long as the interior is either black. Gray interior
is also a consideration.
- - Interior condition should be reasonable (the seats will be replaced, so
wear there is okay)
- - Absolutely no accidents
- - Preferably a 4-door but will consider a 2-door if the car is right.

Even if the car is not running, I will consider it as long as the price
reflects the condition.

I am planning on making this purchase in the next month or so.

Please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and hopefully you have some
pictures.

For Sale:

A set of 16x8 OZ Monte Carlo wheels. The wheels were put on the car for only
two track days. They are very straight and very true with no curb rash and
no scratches. The wheels have BFG R1s mounted on them (there is some tread
left, but the tires are about 2 years old, so no good). I will leave the
tires on for shipping.

Asking $450/- obo. (Buyer pays shipping from 60143).

Hawk Gold HT8 brake pads:
Two sets front and one set rear. One set front and one set rear are brand
new, never installed. The other set was used on the track for one 30 minute
session (still has more than 90% of meat left). These pads fit any non-M3
E36 and are a great pad. Does not spew out the gunk as the Blues do and are
much consistent to modulate.

Asking $250/- obo. (Buyer pays shipping from 60143).

Subject: [uuc] More info on suspension noise

Ok, so the noise I was asking about last week is getting worse. This
weekend I used the car for a local car control course I instruct......lots
of skid pad time & hours of autocross.

The noise seems to be coming from the front end of the car.....sounds like
the noise you might get running over bridge expansion joints or botts dots.
It's nearly imperceptible driving straight, but becomes faster & more
intense when turning right. It's not there when turning left. The
frequency of the "bumps" doesn't change with speed, only as you turn right.
You can feel it by placing your feet on the front of the floor board.

I had the car on jackstands for 2 days last week & couldn't find anything.
Nothing is loose. Nothing seems to contact anything else (except, when on
jackstands, the front sway bar touched the bell housing when the wheels are
pointed straight--but that's been that way for 5 years & doesn't touch with
the suspension loaded). Nothing seems to be binding. The noise comes with
both sets of tires & rotating street tires doesn't change anything. The
car's performance doesn't seem to be compromised at all.

I'm really perplexed. I do have a couple of notes that may help. The noise
started after my last track session. The front toe seems to be waaaaaaay
out (as evidenced by the complete lack of any tread on the inside edge of
the street tires--plus A TON of dartiness). I also noticed, actually Tim Ng
noticed that the right front spring is in upside down. With the quality of
work I got with the suspension rebuild, this doesn't surprise me, but it's
been like that for almost 2 years now.

I'm planning to have the alignment checked this week to try & verify
nothing's bent. However, any suggestions you guys & gals may have would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Lee

It sure is, plus we know the chief instructor and event organizer and they
always do a fantastic job. There's a bunch of us Motor City chapter folks
attending so you can meet Ben Keyes and his wife's Mini Cooper <g>, Karl
Rentler is doing his very first club race battling among others John Van
Houten in his 2nd race but John is *very* fast and will be shooting for
class win in a tough KP field. Simon Hunter in the J-stock car is sure to
put on a good show battling John Paton. As always Larry in his C-Mod car
will be amazing to watch.

I'm driving (hopefully in "A" group) which will be my first. So who'll be
my instructor? Why hopefully Jack Money since he won't be racing he'll be
teaching me everything he knows and my car is now safer/faster/better
handling than ever. Jack is driving my car as well so you can take a ride
with him in my Kartlos modified little 4 cylinder beast. Also attending
will be my housemate Jay H. (lister as well) and his friend Brad in his
very first school (in a TT RX-7 no less). It'll be fun, sign up, I'll send
out a good writeup after the event. www.bluegrassbimmers.org

Phil,
If you're looking for an open wheel course, I did Derek Daly in Las Vegas
last February and it was a blast -- great instructors, plenty of track time,
and the Stack data acquisition system was really invaluable. I haven't been
to any tracks in California, but have heard a lot of good comments about the
Russell school.

I'd say tie rod end, tie rod assembly or perhaps your steering rack. Check
fluid level, look for leaks although I still think it may be your tie rod
assembly(ies).

I thought that Derek Daly was the school that was supposed to do the most
to make experienced racers faster...
