Looking for opinions from the wise sages of the list (^_^) Our 86 528e just failed inspection because of its cracked exhaust (high NOx). I know I need to replace the whole thing... I also need to replace the driveshaft and front control arms. That's a hella lot o' money, even doing it myself. So, the quandary is now, should I bother the fix this old girl with 230k on her or sell her for parts. We have only had it for 3 years, but you know old BMWs, they *are* alive. She still looks great, runs great, and has a perfect black leather interior. I am truly at a loss and need the opinion of those who have gone before.. My car is currently in the shop and they are trying to diagnose the problem. The symptoms are: 1) when starting cold- idle would be lower than usual, sometimes dip to around 500rpm, causing the car to shake, almost stalling. 2) after driving for a while (either highway or local) and coming to a stop, the idle would sometimes drop to or a bit under 500rpm, causing the car to shake, etc. Sometimes the car would stall if I don't keep the rpm up. 3) trying to accelerate from stopping, the car would hesitate and only move a little, until I hit the throttle hard enough, when it would regain "consciousness". Not fun when crossing streets where the cross traffic doesn't have to stop! 4) occasionally, the same hesitation would occur while the car is moving, between 2,000-2,500 rpm. Thank you in advance for reading! - -Michael Su ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Jun 2003 21:39:56 -0400 From: "Robert Tobin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Survey - used lease car v. used "rental' car I recall during my first trip to FLA we found an alternative breaking method to use on the rental 1985 Chevy Cavalier. Travelling south on A1A on Singer Island at about 50 or so, there was no reason to bother oneself with switching pedals or even taking ones foot off the gas; just drop her into "R". Worked like a charm. Tires smoking, enging racing, and speed slowly being shaved off. It would slow down enough to throw it back into "D" and swing a hard left into the parking lot. Worked like a charm. Every time. How we ever managed to get back to the rental agency under it's own power remains a mystery. Yeah, I'd buy rental.... If the donor has big bucks, how about the BMW CCA show at the Nrburg Ring? You won't be going so fast, but the venue is something else. Once you know what you are doing (after the school), or think you do, buy a ticket and have at it. There is no race course in the world that can compare. A tad pricey, perhaps, but you only come around once, and what about European delivery? (Better after the school so you don't abuse the new one!) My M5's PO was the same. Even on the phone I liked him. After I bought the car and he was driving me to his house before I took off, he called his wife immediately and told her that I had decided not to get it and she immediately told him it was OK and that he may as well keep it if he liked it so much. He got a new M5 as well. I trust my people skills (telling good people from bad, not smooth talk with women or selling crap!) MUCH more than my engineering skills. I have been let down by them only once and even then I went against my instincts. Of course, the data is biased as one never knows how many of the bracketed-as-bad-and-avoided people were actually good, but still. Sometimes I'm surprised at how diversely 'extracted' is the set of people on whom they have automatically and successfully worked. I'd buy a car based on them any day. Neil Deshpande *** "Gary Derian" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> When I bought my M5, I knew very little about it and was clueless where to go for an inspection. The seller had a nice house, cases of Mobil 1 in the garage, a Porsche 911, BMW Z-3, Lexus RX-300 and a few other nice cars. Wife was pleasant and recounted some stories about the car. He was selling it to buy a new M5. It might have all been a setup, but the car was and is great. The E30 M3 has ATE. I think the rear calipers on my cars are ATE as well, but the front are certainly Girling. For so simple a device, I think there will be little to no difference. I've rebuilt mine so the difference is likey even less. Neil Deshpande *** Clarence Behrend <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Just picked up some rebuilt brake calipers for the '87 325. I had ordered ATE and got Girlingunits. Is there any difference wrt quality? Are they really the same even though Girling isconsiderably cheaper? My car originally had Girlings and I put ATEs on from my wreck simplybecause I liked the things my wreck had. If it makes any difference the car does get tracked a few times a year and I use the brakes hard on the street. I decided to put the Girlings in and feel more comfortable about it now. Kinda burned me that I had to go to the wreck and remove the caliper carrier b/c the ATE and Girling carriers are not interchangable. The first guide pin I removed from the ATE unit was sticky w/rubber; probably why it the caliper was seeming to hang. Worse, the threads were almost gone. MAYBE I could've gotten by w/just replacing the pins and the rubber sleeves they slide in. The pin design appears to be the major difference between Girling and ATE. The ATE pin fits snuggly in the rubber sleeve and seems to be potentially exposed to the elements; it is both a guide pin and fastens the caliper to the carrier. The Girling pin is very different. It's loosely enclosed in rubber and is only a guide pin which fits loosely into it's recepticle. The caliper is held to the carrier w/a separate bolt. Girling seems to have less chance of binding, unlike the ATE. The holes size in the center is the same for all three model ranges you list (E39 is different). The difficulty in using E31 wheels on the other cars might be offset, rather than hub size. I appreciate all this great advice and am going to miss the digest while gone.....who knows maybe I'll just keep it active although somehow I think I may not have time to read all this great stuff while I'm gone. My predecessor who went on the exchange last year has already told me I MUST travel EVERY weekend. He went to New Zealand while there. I think I'll stay away from the Asian continent unless the SARS thing gets a whole lot better. Somehow I think I'll have plenty to keep me busy in Australia. Phil Look us up when you get to Brisbane, we have a quite active BMW club here in Queensland (and in most other states) and would make you most welcome at any of our events. http://www.bmwclubqld.asn.au/Default.htm http://www.clubs.bmw.com.au/ A Holden (GM) Commodore is not exactly what Australian Rentals class as a "compact". A quite respectable mass production car with "sport" options plus the factory supported modified versions (HSV = Holden Special Vehicles) http://www.hsv.com.au/main.html Most / all imported cars retain the steering column stalk arrangement from LHD (BMW included), so we all have to adapt here too. For "compact" cars check here http://www.ginz.com/supplier-info-au.asp?supplier=HERAUS&group=RC®i on=NSW&country=au Make sure whatever you get has Air conditioning - Brisbane summers are a bit humid !
