Matt, Depending on what you decide to do, you or I may prove to be the other's blessing in disguise! My '87 528e was totalled at the end of March. After settling and buying another e28, I was left with a wrecked 528e with almost everything still good that I needed to dismantle and sell the parts from. If the damage had been less than about $1500, I would have most likely fixed the car and would still be driving it today. The car has/had 245,000 original miles on it and was still running strong. Maintenance is the KEY on these cars. If you fall behind, the thing just starts to turn into a pile of rust. Over the first year or two of ownership, you will spend well into the $2,000 range per year to keep the car up, if not more. If you decide to keep the car, e-mail me. I have the complete exhaust from my 528e that will fit your '86 528e perfectly, no modifications. I have the exhaust manifolds, downpipes, cat, and catback section. Nothing wrong with any of it. Feel free to inquire about any or all of it. I also have a driveshaft for a manual transmissioned 528e if you need that. If you decide to part the car, again. . . e-mail me. I am very interested in your full black leather interior! Hope this helps. A guy I grew up with is a doctor and while he is no mechanic he often jokes that he knows more about cars than 99% of the doctors he works with (most doctors didn't take auto shop in high school). My friend's daily driver is an E430 but he also has a 2001 4Runner that bought new to drive to Tahoe in the winter and take mountain biking in the summer. He recently brought the 4Runner in to the Toyota dealer for an oil change at 15,000 miles and told them to look it over for anything else that needed work. Toyota came back and said that his perfect condition 4Runner that is garaged every night and drives perfectly needs: 4 New Shocks 1 New Rear Differential 1 New 5 Speed Transmission 1 New Transfer Case 1 New Main Seal 1 New Water Pump He asked me if I thought that the Toyota dealer may be pulling some kind of warrantee scam on Toyota (and picked him since he was wearing surgical scrubs and did not look like he knew a lot about cars). The dealer is not going to charge him anything for the work, but it seems strange that a Toyota that had never been abused would need all the above items at one time. Kevin Kelly BMW CCA 50039 P.S. Yes, the sound is perfect -- even when the driver misses a shift! The squealing tires are there as well. In the remastered version, is anything done to improve the sound? in the original, you can tell at times they messed up with the sound recording and it was out of phase of the actual footage. example, up shifting thru a corner when it would not have been possible to have shifted twice in such a short space etc. It has been awhile since watching, but I remember a few spots were they really screwed that part up. But still quite good just for the footage. Basically, anything that will fit the E34 will fit the E24. The 18" M-Parallel wheels fitted to the 850CSi are different than those on the E34 and have offsets that don't fit as nicely. The 16" E31 cast and forged wheels fit fine. HTH, Jim Moran '88 M6 From: "Chris Marino" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Can someone tell me if the e24 6 series wheel's are interchangeable with the > e34/e31. It depends on whether or not you would like to drive her for a few more years...and what "the whole thing" means. A cracked manifold doesn't mean that the engine needs replacement! There is a reasonable chance that replacing the manifold will solve the emissions problem. The driveshaft and control arms are what, $1000 to fix? If I can keep a car in good running shape for less than $1000 per year, I think I'm doing pretty well. There is a good chance that you will meet this criteria with a 528e, if you keep it for a few years. They are pretty bullet-proof. As she sits, she is worth something like $1000. Fix the problems, and the value climbs to $2000. So you won't get your investment back. However, if you want a decent running car that is low maintenance and easy on gas, she is worth the effort. If you want a different car next year, maybe not :-) - -tdc > Our 86 528e just failed inspection because of its cracked exhaust (high > NOx). > I know I need to replace the whole thing... > I also need to replace the driveshaft and front control arms. > > That's a hella lot o' money, even doing it myself. > > So, the quandary is now, should I bother the fix this old girl with > 230k > on her or sell her for parts. I always park it down hill as the oil pressure comes up faster this way when it starts. This makes drop starting in 1st or 2nd gear an easy and obvious thing to do. I've also drop started in reverse when oil-pressure-friendly parking is not available, and in 4th or 5th when i've killed the motor or need to stop/start it for some reason while at highway speeds ( no lectures, please :) Push starting the E28 on flat ground is also possible with just one person (the driver, who starts behind the car and hops in after it starts rolling), i usually use 2nd for this. I once drive a '85 Bronco II 4x4 700 miles with no starter. Careful parking is the name of the game. The sketchy part is stopping for gas and never killing the motor as you fill up. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 05:20:06 -0500 From: "phil irby" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Re: Coming to Australia was To store .... Simon, Thanks very much for the reply. Looks like you have a very active BMW club in QLD and I'm looking forward to meeting a few fellow enthusiasts when I get there! Hope to see you soon. Actually I think the steering wheel on the right will help me get used to driving on the left side of the road......one of the guys I work with spent some time in Amberley and he said to just remember "driver on the center" and then it's not that different from here in the States.
