You forgot the e36 m3: $0.

I love my car.

So much for the theory that everything on the E30 M3 costs three times more than
regular E30s. Throw that rule out the window. The E30 M3 wires would be over $1,000.

Can that be right? $13?

Later,

I got my first trophy last year in a NASA enduro; it's an... ummm... exuberantly
illustrated plaque. When I got it home, I couldn't even bear to put it in the garage.
So I sent it to my parents with a sappy note presenting them with my first racing
trophy in gratitude for all their support. Moms can display _anything_ their child
sends them, right?

have enough now. But, those plastic goddesses, those have got to go...

Now, this is totally off topic. But, last year I also competed in Tae
Kwondo. Those were the most god awful, hideous, and gigantic trophies
I've
ever seen... :) They are now well hidden in the closet. I have no idea
what to do with them.

Heh... trophies, at last year's SCCA meeting we were discussing trophies
and
ideas for them so they could be added to the budget. Someone suggested
t-shirts which got turned down real quick! The roadracers especially
mentioned their trophies sometimes end up costing 10K for the weekend so
they could win and like to have something nice that they can display
either
at home or work not some stinkin' t-shirt.

I have a gazzillion ones from 5 years of regional autoxing which really
don't mean much but some of them are really nice, I keep them at work. :-)

I'm sure it has to do with the rotary engine and length of wire or
something like that. There are lots of plug wire sets that cost very
little.
I mentioned those 2 simply because of their seemingly incongruous
pricing.

Neil N. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

"I seem to recall reading in my Bentley about removing the gas pedal"

You drive a Bentley, Neil? :)

A loose throttle pedal is apparently quite serious, though I've never
suffered it myself. The accelerator worked a bit loose on my much-missed
318is during the warranty period, and the dealer insisted that he send a
flatbed over to pick the car up rather than have me drive it over myself (in
the end I drove it after reassuing the dealer that it was only wobbly at the
bottom, and not actually flapping about). Apparently a floored throttle,
should the pedal break free at the bottom and stick in the carpet, can
overcome the return spring and stay floored even when one's foot isn't.

Oddly enough that car also had its steering wheel and gearshift replaced
during its life with me - that's three out of five primary driver contact
points.

Either it was an automatic, or you drove it standing up.

I can understand the expense of these wires if there were a coil attached for
each cylinder. But these prices seem really whacked. Why are they so costly?
Are they made from woven gold?

Subject: [uuc] Mini Cooper S driving impressions

After owning two Porsche 928s, one E36 M3 set-up for autocross and my
current JP E30 M3,
last week I purchased a Mini Cooper S.

I have to say that next to my race car, this is the most fun car I have
ever owned or driven (and believe me I have driven a lot).

Here is a point by point analysis:

Handling:
If I were setting up a car for autocross/open track duty, this is how I
would have set it up. Excellent turn in, quick (2.4 turns lock to lock
steering) and wonderful throttle steering and grip, lots of grip even
with the Pirelli V rated run-flats. I can't wait to get a second set of
wheels and get some decent rubber on the car. No brake dive, no
acceleration squat and **flat** cornering.
Just plain fantastic, much better than any M car I have driven in stock
form. I know some people haeve upgraded the rear sway bar and I think I
may be tempted to do this too just for fun. But as it came from the
factory, it is good to excellent. When the shocks wear out, I will
probably swap to adjustable Konis. By the way, there is no torque steer
and the grip is very good despite not having a limited slip. I think a
JS mini cooper or a JP mini cooper will give the E30 M3 a run for the
money and probably be faster than an E36 325/JP.

Power:

There is enough power but the low end (below 2500 rpm is sort of weak).
Thank god, the 6 speed Getrag is easy to shift and the clutch pedal is
delightful. The car is also nicely set-up for heel-and toe.

Brakes:

The brakes seem adequate although I think BMW could have specified a
more aggressive compound especially for the fronts. For track, I would
definitely get some brake ducting. My car does not have the fog lights
so it is perfect for putting ducting in there.

Exterior:

What can I say, it looks great

Interior:

I never look at anything but the tach, I think fit and finish is good
but not up to BMW standards. I have a rear hatch rattle that should get
fixed when I take it in for the oil change. Believe it or not,my almost
6 ft frame fits behind the driver seat adjusted for me. This thing is a
marvel of careful engineering.

Access to components:

Engine bay is tight, some of the hoses etc are easy to access, but the
water pump, supercharger and some of the other parts are tough to get
at. The ECU can be easily removed for sw upgrades.

Aftermarket support:

So far so good, still waiting to see when Hawk will release brake pads
and when Bilstein will release a nice shock package. Less organized
than BMW and no Dinan equivalent place that will back up their products
with a factory like warranty. On the plus side, i will be getting the
JCW package soon. Lots of cottage industry type shops. Overall, I think
the market will improve in two to three years.

BMW Snob appeal:

Well, BMW owners look at it kind of funny, and I get emails from people
saying that MINI is not a BMW. I say drive one then talk. I think next
to the E30 M3 (which I own), this is the funnest, best handling car BMW
has produced to this date. And on the VIN sticker, it says BMW, so I
guess it is a BMW after all.

So if you haven't driven one, go drive one, you will most likely end up
buying one.

By the way, did I say it gets around 28 mpg the way I drive :-)

Wow, that seems a bit steep. I pretty sure I bought a complete high
beam (E-code ellipsoid) for ~$50 from the dealer with CCA discount. I
recall pricing the low beams in the same range. I remember deciding the
other lights were not pocked enough to justify spending $200 for new
lights.

Anyone else with Euro ellipsoids notice the vertical white stripes on
the inside of the glass? Wonder if that is for alignment during
assembly??

According to the ETK, these are the euro ellipsoid part numbers (can't
find my receipt to confirm the high beam p/n).

63 12 1 386 407 - high beam insert left
63 12 1 386 408 - high beam insert right
63 12 1 385 633 - lamp lens left - Hella
63 12 1 385 634 - lamp lens right - Hella
63 12 1 386 635 - lamp lens left - Bosch
63 12 1 386 636 - lamp lens right - Bosch

It's been about 6 - 8 months, so my memory could be getting foggy, but
that's how I remember it.
