The vaunted safety of having three tons of steel around you is, in my opinion (and in many others), overrated. I would recommend an early 2000's 323iT (touring/wagon). Good gas mileage, plenty of room to haul stuff around in. Can tow in a pinch. Excellent safety and handling. I'm looking at a 2001 323iT on eBay (a good guide to prices, though a double dose of caveat emptor applies if buying) that is sitting in the 14 grand range with two days left. Definitely wouldn't expect it to go above your 18k limit. You can pick up an aftermarket warrenty on anything that is out of it with no problem and still stay under budget. I understand this but we do really need an SUV (4wd + lots of cargo space + ground clearance). So as far as SUV's go, it must be reliable and safe. I didn't mention it but we would also consider an Audi wagon. I suggested the 3 series touring but she wasn't too sure about having both of our cars look so similar. Also the ground clearance would be an issue. And I would need a 4wd (323xit??). I may try to suggest it to her again. It does seem like it is in our price range. Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket warranty company? I assume you've already changed the fronts one time to go with the normal 2x as quick wear rate as compared to the fronts ? the "normal" pad to have the most wear is the LF inside pad (assuming normal right-turn biased racetrack) or at least that's what they always warn you to check at the events I've done. Neil, Ed and everyone who responded, I spent some time looking closer at this this weekend. I'm confident the play is in the fan clutch, as determined by visual inspection (it's obvious) and by removing the fan the noise/vibration goes away. Also, the water pump is new as of March and from a reputable source. Those aren't guarantees, but combined with everything else, I ordered a new fan clutch just a few minutes ago. Thanks again. Hmm strange but in any case.... rebuild them! :-) It could be the piston getting hung up and not the guide bolts. I think I rebuilt one of Ben's on his '99 M Coupe (front one) but it's possible that your car could use a refresh on the seals/dust boots by now. I can't speak for the German or Japanese, but my fiance's family is nuts about british automobiles, MGs, and Land Rovers. They have over two dozen Rovers between them. Bottom line - Disco's and other Land Rovers are safe, relatively cheap for a used one, and the best 4x4 by far, but not very reliable or user friendly or mechanic friendly. They are underpowered, unless you get the BMW engine, and tend to spring leaks here and there. Lucas electronic years should be avoided at any costs, as well as first year Bosch electronics - too many bugs. My wife noticed a 2002 M3 on the way into the parking lot and said to me, "Why don't we just get the M3?" I told her because of how much they cost (around 50k). She told me that she would get a less expensive car if we could get the M3. And get this, she said that she would prefer the manual transmission. I still want her to have a safe reliable SUV (we have a 5 month old baby). So here is what I am looking for: 99 and up German, Japanese, SUV. They seem to be the most reliable. How is the LR Discovery II? High mileage is OK (she drives about 6k per year) Certified or extended warranty Would like to spend around 15k but would go up to 18k Thanks in advance!! Larry Does anyone know if the M3 will get the coupe headlight change?
